Chapter 4: The Room That Was Never Empty

I ran upstairs so fast I almost fell.

“Lily!””

My voice cracked as it echoed through the hallway.

No answer.

The piece of paper was still in my hand.

Three words.

*Daddy found me.*

My fingers shook.

Because Lily didn’t call many people “Daddy.””

Only me.

Only me.

Unless someone had taught her to say it.

Unless someone had been talking to her.

Unless someone had been inside our house longer than I realized.

I reached her bedroom door.

It was open.

The room looked untouched.

Her stuffed animals sat on the bed.

Her pink blanket was folded neatly.

Her little nightlight was still glowing even though it was daytime.

But Lily was gone.

“Ryan.””

Vanessa’s voice came from behind me.

She sounded terrified.

Not worried.

Terrified.

I turned around.

“Where is she?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

The words came out sharper than I intended.

But I didn’t care.

My daughter was missing.

Again.

Just like Emma.

Vanessa flinched.

“I would never hurt Lily.””

“I didn’t say you did.””

“But you thought it.””

I looked at her.

And the worst part was that she was right.

Because I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

My wife had hidden a child inside our house.

A child she claimed to have lost years ago.

A child who said Vanessa knew who trapped her.

And now my daughter was gone.

I searched the room.

Under the bed.

Inside the closet.

Behind the curtains.

Nothing.

Then I noticed something.

The closet door.

It was open.

Just like yesterday.

I stepped closer.

The wooden panel behind the shelf was hanging loose.

The hidden passage.

The place where Emma had lived.

My stomach tightened.

“Emma.””

She appeared at the top of the stairs.

Her face was wet with tears.

“What?””

I pointed toward the opening.

“Did Lily go in there?””

Emma slowly nodded.

“She heard me crying.””

My blood ran cold.

“She came to help me.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“She knew about this?””

Emma looked down.

“She heard us.””

“Us?””

The little girl swallowed.

“Me and Daniel.””

The air left my lungs.

“Daniel was here?””

She nodded.

“He comes when Mommy is asleep.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That’s impossible.””

Emma looked at her.

“No.””

The little girl’s voice was quiet.

But certain.

“He knows the house.””

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Emma pointed toward the wall.

“He made it.””

I stared into the darkness behind the panel.

The passage wasn’t random.

It wasn’t an accident.

Someone had built it.

Someone had created a hidden space inside our home.

A place where a child could disappear.

A place where nobody would look.

I pulled out my phone.

“I’m calling the police.””

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Ryan, wait.””

“Wait?””

My voice rose.

“My daughter is missing.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you stopping me?””

Her eyes moved toward Emma.

Then the wall.

“Because if Daniel knows the police are coming, he’ll run.””

I stared at her.

“And?””

“And he’ll take Lily.””

The fear in her voice was real.

That was the problem.

I believed her.

But I still didn’t trust her.

I pulled my arm away.

“I’m calling.””

I dialed.

Before the call connected, the lights went out.

The entire house fell into darkness.

Emma screamed.

Vanessa grabbed my shoulder.

Then we heard it.

A sound from downstairs.

A door closing.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Someone had entered.

I held my phone tightly.

“Stay here.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Stay with Emma.””

“I’m coming with you.””

I looked at her.

“For once, you’re going to tell me the truth.””

She nodded.

“I will.””

We moved downstairs.

Every step felt louder than it should have.

The house that had always felt warm now felt like a trap.

Every shadow looked like someone hiding.

Every corner looked like a place where secrets could wait.

When we reached the living room, I stopped.

The front door was still locked.

Daniel wasn’t there.

But someone had been.

On the coffee table was an old photograph.

A photograph I had never seen before.

I picked it up.

It was Vanessa.

Young.

Maybe nineteen.

She was holding a baby.

Emma.

Standing beside them was Daniel.

But that wasn’t what caught my attention.

Behind them was our house.

The same house.

The same front porch.

The same bedroom window upstairs.

I turned the picture over.

There was writing on the back.

*Home again.*

My stomach twisted.

“Why was this taken here?””

Vanessa looked at it.

Her face went pale.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at her.

“Don’t lie.””

She closed her eyes.

“This was my parents’ house.””

“What?””

“I grew up here.””

The room felt like it was spinning.

“You never told me that.””

“I didn’t want to remember.””

“Remember what?””

She looked toward the wall.

“Daniel.””

I waited.

She took a breath.

“Before Emma disappeared, Daniel brought us here.””

“Why?””

“He said this house was safer.””

I stared at her.

“You lived here with him?””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

“Six months.””

A horrible realization formed.

The hidden passage.

The wall.

The bedroom.

It wasn’t built recently.

It had always been here.

I looked upstairs.

“Emma was hidden here before.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I think so.””

I stepped back.

“You think?””

She looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know every part of this house.””

“But you knew enough.””

Silence.

Then my phone buzzed.

A notification.

Unknown number.

A photo.

I opened it.

My entire body went cold.

It was Lily.

She was sitting on the floor.

Inside the hidden passage.

She looked scared.

But unharmed.

Under the photo was a message.

*She’s just like her sister.*

I felt Vanessa grab my arm.

“What is it?””

I showed her.

She covered her mouth.

“No.””

Another message appeared.

*Bring Emma to the basement.*

I looked at Vanessa.

“There’s a basement?””

She didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

I felt anger rising.

“You have got to be kidding me.””

“Ryan—”

“No.””

I pointed at the phone.

“My daughter is being held somewhere inside our house.””

“I know.””

“And you keep having answers.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

She whispered:

“The truth.””

I stared at her.

“Then tell me.””

A long silence followed.

Then Vanessa walked toward the basement door.

A door I had never noticed before.

It was hidden behind a bookshelf.

She moved the shelf aside.

A narrow wooden door appeared.

My skin prickled.

“How long has that been there?””

She looked at it.

“Since before I was born.””

She reached for the handle.

Then stopped.

“Ryan.””

“What?””

She looked back at me.

“If we go down there…”

She swallowed.

“You need to understand something.””

“What?””

Her voice broke.

“Daniel isn’t the only person who knows about this place.””

The basement door creaked open by itself.

A cold breeze moved through the room.

And from somewhere below…

I heard Lily crying.

But then another voice spoke.

A child’s voice.

A voice I recognized.

Emma’s voice.

Coming from the basement.

“Daddy…”

I turned toward her.

But Emma was standing beside me.

Her face was frozen.

Because she had heard it too.

The voice from below whispered again.

“Daddy, don’t let Mommy find me.””

And Vanessa stepped backward.

Because she knew exactly whose voice it was.

Her face drained of color.

“It’s impossible.””

I grabbed the flashlight from the drawer.

“Who is down there?””

Vanessa looked at the darkness beneath the house.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“My first daughter.””
