Chapter 9: The Final Lie

The old hospital had been abandoned for years.

But somehow, it still felt alive.

Like the walls remembered every secret.

I walked through the empty hallway.

The same hallway where my entire family’s future had changed.

A voice echoed.

“You came.””

Marcus stepped out.

I stopped.

“I almost didn’t.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“Tell me everything.””

Marcus looked exhausted.

“I was angry at you for most of my life.””

“I know.””

“I thought you stole everything.””

“Did I?””

He looked at me.

“No.””

That answer surprised me.

“My father stole everything.””

I stared.

“Our father.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

The word hit me.

“What?””

He stepped closer.

“Arthur, the man who raised us wasn’t our father.””

I laughed.

“This again?””

“No.””

He handed me a file.

“Read it.””

Inside was a DNA test.

My father.

Marcus.

Me.

The results.

I stared.

My hands went numb.

Marcus whispered:

“We weren’t brothers.””

I looked up.

“Then what were we?””

He looked away.

“Victims.””

I sat down.

The truth was too heavy.

“Who were our real parents?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then said:

“Evelyn told you part of it.””

“What part?””

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

“She was your biological mother.””

I stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“But Evelyn said—”

“Evelyn lied too.””

My head spun.

Everyone had lied.

Everyone had protected something.

Marcus continued:

“Your real mother was Rachel.””

I stopped.

“She’s alive.””

“Yes.””

“And my father?””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“Daniel.””

Silence.

The hospital seemed to disappear.

Daniel.

The man connected to Claire.

The man who caused the hospital records.

The man who had been watching my family.

“He’s my father?””

Marcus nodded.

“And Maya?””

Marcus looked at me.

“That’s the part you won’t like.””

I already knew.

“Tell me.””

“Maya is Rachel’s daughter.””

I stared.

“What?””

“She’s your daughter because Rachel had her after you separated.””

My heart stopped.

“Then why hide her?””

“Because Daniel wanted control.””

“Over what?””

Marcus looked toward the hallway.

“Everything.””

A slow clap echoed.

We turned.

Daniel stepped out.

Smiling.

“You always were smarter than I gave you credit for, Marcus.””

My fists tightened.

“You.””

Daniel smiled.

“Arthur.””

“You ruined my family.””

He laughed softly.

“No.””

He walked closer.

“I created your family.””

I wanted to hit him.

But I needed answers.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because your father owed me.””

“Owed you what?””

“My life.””

He smiled.

“And when he died, I collected.””

“You switched babies.””

“Yes.””

“You destroyed records.””

“Yes.””

“Why Maya?””

His expression changed.

“Because she was the only child I couldn’t control.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked toward me.

“Rachel chose you.””

The words were poison.

“She chose love over power.””

“So you punished her?””

“No.””

He smiled.

“I punished you.””

I stepped forward.

“You are sick.””

Maybe he saw the hatred in my eyes.

Because for the first time, he looked afraid.

Then sirens sounded outside.

Daniel turned.

Marcus smiled.

“You didn’t think I came alone, did you?””

Police entered.

Daniel’s face changed.

And as they arrested him, he shouted one final thing.

“Arthur!””

I looked back.

“You still don’t know the biggest secret!””

I froze.

“What?””

May you like

Daniel smiled.

“Ask Claire why she really chose you.””
