Chapter 3: The Woman At The Door

I opened the door slowly.

And the world stopped.

A woman stood on my porch.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

My hands started shaking.

“Mom?””

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“Hello, Arthur.””

I stepped backward.

“No.””

Claire came beside me.

“Arthur, who is that?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because the woman standing in front of me was supposed to be impossible.

My mother had died.

I attended her funeral.

I watched her coffin disappear into the ground.

Yet she was standing in front of me.

“I’m not your mother,” she whispered.

The sentence somehow made everything worse.

“What?””

She looked down.

“My name is Evelyn Carter.””

My mind raced.

“Then why do you look exactly like my mother?””

“Because I was her sister.””

Nobody moved.

My entire life cracked open in front of my family.

She stepped inside.

“I’m sorry, Arthur.””

“For what?””

“For letting you believe a lie for fifty-two years.””

I stared at her.

“What lie?””

Evelyn looked at Maya.

Then at me.

“The truth about your parents.””

My voice became sharper.

“My parents are dead.””

“Yes.””

“Then tell me why my daughter has a letter saying Marcus isn’t my brother.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Because Marcus isn’t your brother.””

I felt anger rising.

“Everyone keeps saying that. Nobody explains anything.””

She nodded.

“You deserve answers.””

We sat in the living room.

The same room where my family had almost broken apart hours earlier.

Evelyn placed an old photograph on the table.

Two babies.

One was me.

The other was Marcus.

“You and Marcus were both adopted.””

The words hit harder than any accusation.

“What?””

“Your parents adopted you first. Years later, they adopted Marcus.””

I looked at Claire.

She looked just as shocked.

“Why hide that?””

Evelyn took a breath.

“Because Marcus’s biological father was dangerous.””

Silence.

“Who?””

She looked directly at me.

“Your father.””

I stood.

“No.””

“Arthur—”

“No.””

My voice echoed.

“My father died when I was thirty.””

“Yes.””

“And Marcus’s father?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Was the same man.””

I couldn’t breathe.

My entire family history had changed in one night.

Maya quietly said:

“Dad…”

I looked at her.

She looked guilty.

“Why didn’t you tell me this sooner?””

“Because Uncle Marcus scared me.””

“How?””

“He said if I told you, you would hate him.””

I laughed once.

A broken sound.

“I already hate what he did.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She leaned forward.

“Marcus didn’t come here to hurt Maya.””

Everyone froze.

“He came because he discovered something.””

“What?””

Evelyn looked at the staircase.

At Jordan.

Then back at me.

“Something about your son.””

My heart dropped.

“What about Jordan?””

She reached into her bag.

Pulled out a folder.

May you like

And placed it on the table.

“Your son isn’t biologically yours either.””
