Chapter 6: The Woman From My Past

I drove to the old warehouse district alone.

Not because Marcus told me to.

Not because I trusted him.

Because after fifty-two years of believing I knew my own life, I needed answers more than I needed comfort.

The address led me to an abandoned building near the edge of town.

The kind of place where secrets belonged.

The kind of place where people went when they didn’t want to be found.

I stepped out of my truck.

The cold wind cut through my jacket.

Then I heard footsteps.

“Arthur.””

I turned.

And there she was.

Rachel.

Older.

Her hair was silver.

Her face carried years I had never seen.

But her eyes were the same.

The same eyes that haunted my dreams for more than three decades.

I couldn’t speak.

She looked at me with tears forming.

“I knew you would come.””

My jaw tightened.

“You’re alive.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“You let me believe you were dead.””

Her expression broke.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

“There is always a choice.””

She looked down.

“No, Arthur. Sometimes there is only survival.””

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to shout.

But seeing her standing there made every emotion collide.

The girl I loved.

The woman who vanished.

The person who somehow connected every secret that had destroyed my family.

“Tell me the truth,” I said.

Rachel nodded.

“That’s why I brought you here.””

She unlocked the warehouse door.

Inside was a small office.

A table.

Two chairs.

And a box filled with documents.

She opened it.

“I kept everything.””

I stared at the papers.

Hospital records.

Letters.

Photographs.

My entire life reduced to pieces of paper.

“Why did you leave?””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Because your father threatened me.””

My body went still.

“My father?””

“He found out I was pregnant.””

The room felt smaller.

“You were pregnant?””

She looked at me.

“Yes.””

My heartbeat became louder.

“Then why did you disappear?””

“Because your father told me he would ruin both of us.””

I shook my head.

“My father wasn’t like that.””

Rachel gave me a sad smile.

“You loved him.””

The words hurt because they were true.

I had spent my entire life defending a man who might have been a stranger.

“What did he do?””

Rachel walked to the table.

She placed an old photograph in front of me.

A picture of my father.

And Marcus.

And another man.

I recognized him immediately.

Evelyn had shown me his face before.

Marcus’s biological father.

My father’s best friend.

“What am I looking at?””

Rachel whispered:

“The reason your family was destroyed.””

I looked at her.

“Explain.””

“Your father discovered that his friend had a child.””

“Marcus.””

“Yes.””

“And me?””

Rachel nodded.

“You were his biological son.””

I froze.

The same words Marcus had told me.

The same impossible truth.

“No.””

Rachel reached for another document.

“Your parents adopted Marcus after your father’s friend died.””

“Why?””

“Because your father wanted to hide the scandal.””

I looked at the papers.

“And what about me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Your father knew you were his.””

Silence.

The truth finally arrived.

And it was worse than every lie.

“My father knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did he let me believe Marcus was my brother?””

“Because he was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Of losing everything.””

I laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“He lost everything anyway.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

I picked up another document.

It was a hospital record.

My name was there.

But below it was another name.

A mother.

Rachel.

My hands trembled.

“Maya.””

Rachel looked away.

“I know.””

“She’s my daughter.””

“Yes.””

“But Claire…”

Rachel nodded.

“Claire raised her.””

I stared.

“So Maya really is mine?””

“Yes.””

The relief came quickly.

Then disappeared.

Because another question remained.

“Why did Maya think she was adopted?””

Rachel’s face changed.

“Because someone wanted her to believe that.””

“Who?””

Before she could answer, the warehouse door opened.

I turned.

Marcus stood there.

My anger returned instantly.

“You followed me.””

“No.””

He looked at Rachel.

“I came because you were about to learn only half the truth.””

Rachel looked furious.

“You shouldn’t have come.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“I had to.””

I stared between them.

“You both know more than you’re telling me.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then start talking.””

He looked at me.

“Arthur, the person who has been controlling this entire situation isn’t me.””

A chill moved through me.

“Then who?””

Marcus reached into his coat.

He pulled out a photograph.

A recent one.

A person standing outside my house.

Watching my family.

I looked closer.

And my blood ran cold.

Because the person in the photograph was someone I trusted.

Someone who had been inside my home.

Someone who had been comforting my family while everything fell apart.

May you like

Marcus whispered:

“Your wife knows more than she admitted.””
