Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Betrayal

The old man’s words cut through the ballroom.

*“Ask your husband why he was the one who brought me back into your life.””*

Every eye turned toward Daniel.

Mine included.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not even the man holding the cane.

He simply stood there, enjoying the silence he had created.

Daniel looked like someone had pulled the ground from beneath him.

“That’s not true.””

The old man smiled.

A slow, cruel smile.

“Still lying?””

My heart sank.

Because Daniel didn’t look angry.

He looked afraid.

“Daniel,” I said.

He looked at me.

I had never seen him like that.

Not when his family insulted me.

Not when Chloe accused me.

Not even when the truth about my mother came out.

This was different.

This was guilt.

“What is he talking about?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

The old man laughed softly.

“Of course he won’t tell you.””

He tapped his cane against the marble floor.

“My grandson has always been weak.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Don’t talk about me like you know me.””

“I raised you.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You controlled me.””

A murmur spread through the ballroom.

The old man’s smile faded.

“You sound brave tonight.””

“I’m done being afraid of you.””

Those words surprised me.

Because for the first time, Daniel wasn’t trying to protect his family.

He was standing against them.

The old man looked at me.

“Your husband came to me.””

I stared at Daniel.

“Is that true?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Just for a moment.

But it was enough.

My chest tightened.

“Daniel.””

He whispered:

“Yes.””

The answer felt like another betrayal.

A deeper one.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“I didn’t know what he was planning.””

The old man laughed.

“Poor excuse.””

Daniel ignored him.

“I found out my grandfather was alive after discovering the old company accounts.””

My hands curled.

“And you went to him?””

“I needed answers.””

“You needed answers?””

My voice rose.

“You went to the man connected to my mother’s death?””

Daniel looked devastated.

“I didn’t know at first.””

“But you suspected.””

Silence.

That was the answer.

The old man smiled.

“Your husband was desperate.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Shut up.””

“He wanted to save his family.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I wanted to save Ava.””

The old man laughed.

“By making a deal with me?””

The room froze.

I looked at Daniel.

“What deal?””

Daniel looked away.

My heart sank.

Another deal.

Another secret.

“Daniel.””

He swallowed.

“I thought I could use him.””

“To do what?””

“To get evidence.””

“And what did he want in return?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The old man answered for him.

“Your husband promised me something very valuable.””

I felt sick.

“What?””

The old man smiled.

“Your silence.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

He looked directly at me.

“He promised that when the truth came out, he would convince you to leave everything behind.””

My breath caught.

“Leave?””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

The old man continued.

“He promised your father would disappear again.””

My father stepped forward.

“What?””

The old man looked pleased.

“Because Ethan Morgan knows too much.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“You never changed.””

“No.””

The old man smiled.

“I became better.””

I felt something cold settle inside me.

This man wasn’t just cruel.

He believed he was right.

People like him were the most dangerous.

They didn’t see themselves as villains.

They saw themselves as necessary.

Daniel came toward me.

“Ava, listen.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

His face fell.

“I never intended to hurt you.””

“But you did.””

“I know.””

“You went behind my back.””

“Yes.””

“You made decisions about my life.””

“Yes.””

“You involved my child.””

His eyes filled.

“No.””

“Then why did he know about her?””

Daniel looked at the old man.

And I saw the answer.

The old man had known because Daniel had told him.

Maybe not directly.

Maybe not intentionally.

But somehow.

Because secrets didn’t travel by themselves.

They moved through people.

Daniel looked broken.

“I made one mistake.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I made many.””

The honesty hurt.

Because it was the first time he admitted it.

The old man suddenly clapped once.

Slowly.

“Beautiful.””

Everyone looked at him.

“A family falling apart.””

He smiled.

“Exactly what I wanted.””

Chloe stepped forward.

“Why?””

The old man looked at her.

She looked smaller than she ever had.

Not the powerful bride.

Not the spoiled daughter.

Just someone who finally realized her family was built on something rotten.

“Why did you do all of this?””

The old man looked around.

“Because the Sterling name was built on loyalty.””

He glanced at Daniel.

“And betrayal.””

Then he looked at me.

“And because Ethan Morgan took something from me.””

My father’s expression changed.

“What?””

The old man smiled.

“He took the evidence.””

Everyone went still.

“What evidence?”” I asked.

The old man looked at me.

“The evidence that would have destroyed the Sterling family.””

My father shook his head.

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

The old man lifted his cane.

“The evidence still exists.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

Because I knew.

I knew where this was going.

“Where?””

The old man smiled.

“Ask your father.””

I turned.

My father looked away.

My heart sank.

“Dad.””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

Finally, he whispered:

“I hid it.””

The room went silent.

“Where?””

He looked at me.

“I hid it because I knew they would come for you.””

My patience broke.

“Where?””

My father took a breath.

“In your mother’s house.””

I froze.

“My mother’s house was sold.””

“No.””

His eyes filled.

“That’s what they wanted everyone to believe.””

The old man’s expression changed.

A small crack of anger.

Because he knew.

He knew my father had kept something from him.

“Where is it?””

I asked.

My father looked at me.

“Under the floorboards in your childhood bedroom.””

My heart stopped.

The room spun.

My childhood bedroom.

The place I remembered only in fragments.

The yellow curtains.

The wooden shelf.

The stuffed rabbit my mother gave me.

A place I thought was gone forever.

The old man suddenly moved.

“Stop.””

His voice was sharp.

Everyone turned.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Daniel noticed too.

“You don’t want us to find it.””

The old man’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re looking for.””

My father stepped forward.

“Yes, I do.””

The old man stared at him.

“The truth.””

Silence.

Then the old man smiled again.

“But there’s something you don’t know.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“The evidence your father hid doesn’t only expose my crimes.””

A pause.

“It exposes your husband’s.””

I turned toward Daniel.

His face went pale.

“No.””

The old man nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

The old man looked at me.

“Ask him why your mother’s final report has his name on it.””

The world stopped.

I looked at Daniel.

“What?””

He didn’t move.

“Daniel?””

His lips parted.

“Ava…”

The old man smiled.

“Your husband knows exactly what happened the night your mother died.””

My body went cold.

“No.””

Daniel looked like he was about to break.

“Ava, I was a child.””

I stared.

“What did you just say?””

He closed his eyes.

And whispered:

“I was there.””

The room disappeared.

My husband.

The man I trusted.

The man I loved.

Had been connected to my mother’s death all along.

The old man turned and walked toward the exit.

“Now you understand.””

I couldn’t move.

Couldn’t breathe.

Then Daniel said the words that destroyed the last piece of my trust.

“I didn’t kill your mother.””

May you like

A pause.

“But I saw who did.””
