Chapter 6: The Husband’s Hidden Deal

The ballroom had become a courtroom.

No judge.

No jury.

No rules.

Just two hundred people waiting to watch someone fall.

And every single person was looking at Daniel.

My husband stood frozen beneath the golden lights.

The same lights that had been meant to celebrate his sister’s wedding.

The same room where I had walked in believing I belonged.

Now every shadow seemed darker.

Every face seemed unfamiliar.

“Ava…”

Daniel said my name like it could save him.

It couldn’t.

Not anymore.

“What did you do?””

The question was simple.

But his expression told me the answer would not be.

“I need to explain.””

I shook my head.

“You’ve had months to explain.””

His face tightened.

“Ava, please.””

“No.””

I looked around the room.

“At this point, I think everyone deserves to hear it.””

Daniel looked at the guests.

Then at his family.

Then at me.

For once, he had nowhere to hide.

The tablet in the security officer’s hand displayed the leaked files.

My father’s investigation.

The Sterling Corporation documents.

And that message.

*Ava Morgan deserves to know what her husband did before she gives birth.*

Those words kept repeating in my head.

What her husband did.

Not what the Sterling family did.

Not what Chloe did.

Not what Eleanor did.

Daniel.

My husband.

The person who promised to protect me.

The person who kissed my forehead every night before sleeping.

The person who held my hand when we heard our daughter’s heartbeat for the first time.

That person.

“What did you do, Daniel?””

This time, my voice was barely above a whisper.

He looked broken.

“I made a deal.””

The ballroom went silent.

“A deal with who?””

Nobody breathed.

Daniel looked at his mother.

Then at me.

“With Eleanor.””

My stomach twisted.

Eleanor’s face remained calm.

Too calm.

“You’re making this sound worse than it was.””

I turned toward her.

“Really?””

My voice sharpened.

“Because from where I’m standing, my husband made a secret deal with the woman who tried to destroy me tonight.””

Eleanor’s jaw tightened.

“This is family business.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“This is my life.””

The words came out stronger than I expected.

“My child is involved.””

My father moved beside me.

“She has a right to know.””

Eleanor looked at him with hatred.

“You should have stayed gone.””

My father’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

“You still haven’t changed.””

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Daniel finally spoke.

“When I found out Ethan was alive, I confronted my mother.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because I found documents.””

“What documents?””

He swallowed.

“Documents proving my grandfather ordered the investigation into your father.””

My heart tightened.

“So you knew.””

“I knew part of it.””

“And you still married me?””

The pain on his face was immediate.

“Yes.””

That one word hurt.

I laughed softly.

“You’re admitting it like that helps.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“It doesn’t.””

“Then why?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because I loved you.””

I stared at him.

A painful silence passed.

“Love doesn’t look like this.””

His eyes filled.

“I know.””

“No, Daniel.””

I shook my head.

“Love doesn’t watch someone destroy your wife’s life because you’re afraid.””

He flinched.

Because it was true.

My father looked at him.

“What deal did you make?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

And when he answered, his voice was quiet.

“My mother promised she would leave Ava alone.””

I froze.

“Leave me alone?””

Daniel nodded.

“In exchange for my silence.””

The room erupted.

“You traded my safety for silence?””

“No.””

“Yes.””

My voice broke.

“You did.””

“Ava, I thought I could fix it.””

I stared at him.

“You thought?””

He looked desperate.

“I thought if I could get control of the company, I could expose everything later.””

“And meanwhile?””

He had no answer.

“Meanwhile, I lived with your family insulting me.””

Silence.

“Meanwhile, your mother investigated me.””

Silence.

“Meanwhile, someone threatened our daughter.””

Daniel looked like he wanted to disappear.

“I never knew they would threaten the baby.””

“But you knew they were capable of hurting me.””

He looked away.

That was enough.

I didn’t need another confession.

The truth was already standing in front of me.

Chloe suddenly spoke.

“I didn’t know.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked at me.

“I swear.””

I almost smiled.

The woman who accused me of stealing her ring was now asking me to believe her.

“You expected me to trust you?””

“No.””

She looked down.

“I don’t deserve that.””

That surprised me.

Chloe Sterling admitting fault was something I never thought I’d see.

She continued.

“The ring was my idea.””

Eleanor turned sharply.

“What?””

Chloe ignored her.

“I thought if I created enough pressure, someone would finally admit the truth.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You used me.””

Her face fell.

“Yes.””

At least she was honest.

Finally.

“You used my humiliation to expose your family.””

She nodded.

“I thought I was helping.””

“You weren’t.””

“I know.””

For once, she didn’t argue.

A strange sadness filled the room.

Because everyone had been lying.

Just in different ways.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone looked at it.

Another message.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*Daniel is still protecting the person who destroyed your mother’s life.*

I looked up.

Slowly.

Daniel’s face changed.

Because he knew.

“What?””

My voice was cold.

“Who are you protecting?””

“I’m not.””

“Then why does someone think you are?””

He didn’t answer.

My father looked at him.

“Daniel.””

The warning in his voice was clear.

“Tell her.””

Daniel looked exhausted.

Like he had been carrying a weight too heavy for too long.

“There’s one more thing.””

I felt my chest tighten.

Of course there was.

There was always one more thing.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Your mother’s accident wasn’t the only thing my family covered up.””

The room became still.

“What else?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said:

“The reason your father disappeared…”

My fingers curled.

“Was because someone tried to kill him too.””

My father looked away.

I felt dizzy.

Twenty years.

Twenty years of believing I lost one parent.

Now I was finding out I almost lost both.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He looked at Eleanor.

And Eleanor looked furious.

Not afraid.

Furious.

Because she knew what he was about to say.

“Daniel.””

Her voice was a warning.

He ignored it.

“The person who ordered it…”

He swallowed.

“Was someone you know.””

My heartbeat thundered.

“Who?””

Nobody moved.

Then Daniel looked directly at me.

And said the name I never expected.

“The person who signed the order was…”

The ballroom doors suddenly slammed open.

A man rushed inside holding a stack of documents.

He was one of Sterling Corporation’s attorneys.

His face was pale.

“Mr. Sterling.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

The attorney looked at me.

Then at Ethan.

Then at Eleanor.

“We found the original contract.””

Eleanor’s expression changed.

“What contract?””

The attorney’s hand trembled.

“The one that proves who owns the Sterling family fortune.””

Nobody understood.

Until he looked at me.

“Ava Morgan.””

My blood went cold.

“What about me?””

The attorney opened the folder.

“The contract states that if Ethan Morgan’s daughter was ever identified…”

A pause.

Everyone waited.

“…the entire Sterling inheritance transfers to her.””

The room exploded.

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

The attorney shook his head.

“It’s real.””

Eleanor looked like she had seen a ghost.

Chloe whispered:

“That’s why.””

I turned toward her.

“Why what?””

She looked at me with fear.

“Why they were afraid of your baby.””

My hand moved over my stomach.

The baby kicked.

And suddenly, I understood.

This was never about a ring.

It was never about my past.

It was never even about revenge.

Someone had spent twenty years hiding me because my existence threatened everything they built.

The attorney lowered the final document.

“There’s one more clause.””

My voice barely worked.

“What clause?””

He looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“The inheritance only activates if Ava’s child is born.””

The room went silent.

May you like

And Eleanor whispered the words that made my blood freeze.

“Then the baby is the real target.””
