Chapter 7: The Heir They Were Hunting
The words hung in the air.
*The baby is the real target.*
For a moment, nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The ballroom that had been filled with music and celebration only an hour ago now felt like a locked room.
A prison.
And my daughter was the reason everyone was trapped inside.
I wrapped both arms around my stomach.
Not because I was afraid.
Because my body reacted before my mind could.
Protect.
That was all I knew.
Protect my child.
Daniel saw the movement.
His face changed instantly.
“Ava.””
I looked at him.
The man I had loved.
The man who had hurt me.
The man who had been keeping secrets.
But also the man who looked terrified at the thought of losing our daughter.
“I swear to you,” he said, stepping closer, “I never let anyone touch her.””
I stared at him.
“You already let them touch her.””
His expression collapsed.
“You let them make plans.””
“I was trying to stop it.””
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“You were trying to control it.””
The difference mattered.
Because control was what the Sterling family did.
They controlled information.
They controlled people.
They controlled the truth.
And Daniel had thought he could play their game without becoming part of it.
He was wrong.
Ethan moved closer to me.
“Ava, we need to leave.””
I looked at him.
“Leave?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“Somewhere safe.””
A bitter smile crossed my face.
“Safe.””
I looked around the ballroom.
“My whole life, people have been telling me they were keeping me safe.””
My eyes moved from Eleanor.
To Daniel.
To my father.
“And somehow, I always end up being the last person to know what’s happening.””
Nobody argued.
Because nobody could.
A loud crash interrupted the silence.
The champagne tower near the center of the room collapsed.
Glasses shattered across the marble floor.
Everyone jumped.
Security immediately rushed forward.
The guests backed away.
And I noticed something.
Not everyone looked surprised.
One person did not move.
Eleanor.
Her eyes weren’t on the broken glasses.
They were on me.
Watching.
Calculating.
I had spent years underestimating her.
I thought she was just cruel.
A wealthy woman obsessed with status.
But tonight I realized something much worse.
Eleanor Sterling was dangerous because she was patient.
She didn’t explode.
She planned.
“Eleanor,” my father said coldly.
She looked at him.
“You should be careful, Ethan.””
“Is that a threat?””
“No.””
Her lips curved slightly.
“It’s advice.””
Daniel stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Eleanor looked at her son.
“You have no idea what you’ve done.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“I know exactly what I’ve done.””
“Do you?””
She walked closer.
“You betrayed your family.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I finally stopped betraying my wife.””
For the first time that night, I saw Eleanor lose control.
Only for a second.
But it was there.
A crack.
“You’re making an emotional decision.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I’m making the first honest decision of my life.””
The words should have comforted me.
They didn’t.
Because honesty arriving after betrayal still hurt.
The attorney holding the inheritance documents suddenly spoke.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone turned.
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Another secret.
Another hidden piece.
“What now?”” I asked.
The attorney looked uncomfortable.
“The contract has conditions.””
Eleanor’s expression changed.
“What conditions?””
He looked at me.
“The inheritance was designed to protect Ethan Morgan’s descendants.””
My father nodded.
“Yes.””
“But there is a second document.””
He opened another folder.
“This one was added later.””
My stomach tightened.
“Added by who?””
The attorney hesitated.
Then answered:
“By Ethan Morgan.””
Everyone looked at my father.
My father looked shocked.
“That’s impossible.””
The attorney handed him the document.
“You signed it twenty years ago.””
My father read the page.
His face slowly changed.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
And the sadness in his eyes frightened me.
“I made a mistake.””
My chest tightened.
“What mistake?””
He looked down.
“The inheritance wasn’t supposed to go directly to your child.””
Silence.
“Then who?””
His eyes met mine.
“You.””
I blinked.
“What?””
“You were always the heir.””
The room went quiet.
My father continued.
“I knew if the Sterling family found out about you, they would come after you.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought hiding you was the only way to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle.””
My voice cracked.
“I’m tired of being protected by lies.””
My father closed his eyes.
“You’re right.””
That surprised me.
No excuses.
No defense.
Just acceptance.
“I should have trusted you.””
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
Because I wanted to be angry.
But I was tired.
So tired.
Suddenly, Daniel’s phone rang.
Everyone looked at him.
He answered.
“Hello?””
His face changed almost immediately.
“What?””
He walked away slightly.
“No, don’t do anything until I get there.””
I watched him.
The fear returned.
Not the fear of being exposed.
A different fear.
Something had happened.
When he ended the call, he looked at me.
“Ava.””
“What?””
His voice was low.
“The person who leaked the documents wasn’t trying to expose us.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“They wanted to force us into the open.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
“Because someone else knows the truth.””
My father stiffened.
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then:
“My grandfather.””
The room froze.
I stared.
“Your grandfather?””
Daniel nodded.
“He isn’t dead.””
Chloe gasped.
“What?””
Eleanor’s face went white.
“Daniel.””
But he continued.
“He’s been alive this whole time.””
My head spun.
Another person who was supposed to be dead.
Another ghost returning.
“How?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because the Sterling family never buried their secrets.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Where is he?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“He’s coming here.””
Everyone looked toward the ballroom doors.
As if expecting someone to appear.
And then the lights went out.
Complete darkness.
A scream came from somewhere near the entrance.
People started shouting.
Phones lit up one by one.
Emergency lights flickered red.
I felt Daniel grab my hand.
For a second, instinct took over.
I held on.
Then I remembered.
The secrets.
The lies.
The betrayal.
I pulled away.
“Ava, stay close to me.””
“No.””
My voice was steady.
“I’m done standing behind people.””
The red lights flashed across the room.
Then a single spotlight turned on.
At the far end of the ballroom.
A man stood there.
Older.
Elegant.
Holding a cane.
Everyone went silent.
Daniel whispered:
“Grandfather.””
The man smiled.
Not warmly.
Proudly.
His eyes moved through the crowd.
Then stopped on me.
“Ethan Morgan’s daughter.””
My blood ran cold.
He tapped his cane against the floor.
“So this is the child who destroyed my family.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
My voice echoed.
“I’m the child who survived it.””
For the first time, the old man’s smile disappeared.
May you like
And then he said something that made Daniel go pale.
“Ask your husband why he was the one who brought me back into your life.””
