Chapter 9: The Last Attempt to Erase Elsie
The boardroom had always been a place where decisions were made.
Generations of Lombardis had sat around that long wooden table.
Deals were approved there.
Companies were saved there.
Enemies were defeated there.
But that morning, when Julian Lombardi walked into the room, he felt something different.
He felt like he was walking into a courtroom.
The walls were covered with portraits of his ancestors.
Men and women who built the Lombardi name.
People who valued loyalty above everything else.
And now he was standing beneath their eyes, knowing he had almost destroyed the very thing they spent their lives protecting.
Family.
My grandfather walked beside him.
I was held in Maria’s arms behind them.
Cesare had insisted I come.
Not because he wanted me to witness another painful argument.
Because he wanted everyone in that room to remember who this fight was about.
Not money.
Not power.
Me.
Elsie Lombardi.
The little girl someone tried to erase.
The board members were already seated when we entered.
Some looked surprised to see me.
Some looked uncomfortable.
Some avoided looking at me completely.
Cesare noticed.
He noticed everything.
“Good morning.””
Nobody answered immediately.
Then the oldest board member, Richard Bellini, cleared his throat.
“Cesare.””
His eyes moved toward Julian.
“We assume this is about the situation at the gala.””
Cesare sat down.
“Yes.””
Richard folded his hands.
“The situation has created significant concern.””
“Concern about what?””
Richard hesitated.
“Reputation.””
My grandfather’s expression hardened.
“Interesting.””
A pause.
“You are concerned about reputation.””
His eyes moved around the room.
“But not about the child whose identity was hidden.””
Nobody spoke.
Richard looked uncomfortable.
“Cesare, emotions are high.””
“No.””
Cesare shook his head.
“The facts are clear.””
He placed the contract on the table.
“The Vale agreement.””
Several board members looked at it.
A few exchanged glances.
Julian noticed.
“You knew.””
The words came quietly.
But everyone heard.
One board member looked away.
Julian stared.
“How many of you knew?””
Nobody answered.
His face changed.
Because silence was an answer.
Cesare leaned back.
“My son was manipulated.””
Julian looked at him.
Then Cesare continued.
“But he was also responsible.””
The room stayed quiet.
“He made choices that hurt his daughter.””
Julian lowered his head.
“But the people who created this arrangement must also answer for what they attempted.””
Richard looked at the contract.
“Are you suggesting the Vale family attempted to gain control?””
“I am saying the evidence shows an agreement designed to influence my son’s position within this company.””
Richard frowned.
“That is a serious accusation.””
“Yes.””
Cesare looked directly at him.
“That is why we are discussing it here.””
A younger board member named Daniel opened the file.
“I reviewed the documents this morning.””
Everyone turned.
He looked uncomfortable.
“There are irregularities.””
Julian looked up.
“What kind?””
Daniel glanced at the papers.
“Several clauses were structured to weaken Julian’s legal standing if certain personal information became public.””
Cesare nodded.
“Continue.””
Daniel looked at Julian.
“The condition involving undisclosed dependents was not a standard requirement.””
Julian clenched his jaw.
“Meaning?””
“Meaning someone specifically wanted your daughter to become evidence against you.””
The words hit hard.
My father closed his eyes.
Even though he already knew.
Hearing it from someone else made it real.
Richard looked at Cesare.
“Do you know who added those clauses?””
Nobody answered.
Then the boardroom doors opened.
Everyone turned.
Vanessa walked in.
Behind her was Graham Vale.
The room immediately became tense.
My grandfather looked at them.
“I did not invite you.””
Graham smiled slightly.
“You didn’t need to.””
He walked inside confidently.
“I believe my family has a right to be heard.””
Cesare stared.
“You lost that right when you used my son’s weakness against him.””
Graham remained calm.
“You are emotional.””
“No.””
Cesare replied.
“I am informed.””
Graham looked at Julian.
“You look disappointed.””
Julian stood.
“You knew.””
Graham tilted his head.
“Knew what?””
“That this would remove me.””
Graham smiled faintly.
“Julian, don’t pretend you didn’t understand the consequences.””
Julian’s hands tightened.
“You told me I was building a future.””
“You were.””
“No.””
Julian shook his head.
“I was building yours.””
For the first time, Graham’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Cesare saw it.
“You never expected Julian to lead.””
Graham looked at him.
“I expected him to be useful.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“Father.””
Graham ignored her.
“Your son wanted recognition.””
He looked at Julian.
“And I gave him a path.””
Julian stared.
“You gave me a trap.””
“No.””
Graham smiled.
“I gave you exactly what you wanted.””
The words hurt because they contained a piece of truth.
Julian had wanted success.
He had wanted independence.
He had wanted to escape his father’s shadow.
Graham had simply found the weakness.
Cesare looked at Vanessa.
“And you?””
Vanessa looked away.
Cesare continued.
“You knew.””
Her silence answered.
Julian looked at her.
“I loved you.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“I know.””
“No.””
Julian shook his head.
“You knew I loved you.””
A pause.
“And you used it.””
Vanessa looked angry.
“You think you were innocent?””
“No.””
Julian surprised everyone.
“I wasn’t.””
He looked at me.
“I made the worst mistake of my life.””
Then he looked back at Vanessa.
“But I loved you.””
Vanessa’s expression softened for one second.
Then disappeared.
“Love was never enough.””
Julian nodded.
“I know.””
The sadness in his voice was worse than anger.
Because he finally understood.
Then Graham placed a folder on the table.
“This conversation is pointless.””
Cesare looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because the legal process has already begun.””
Julian froze.
“What legal process?””
Graham smiled.
“The removal process.””
The room went silent.
Richard stood.
“Removal?””
Graham nodded.
“Julian’s position as heir is being challenged.””
Cesare’s eyes narrowed.
“On what grounds?””
Graham looked toward me.
Everyone followed his gaze.
Then he said:
“Abandonment of responsibility.””
Julian went still.
Because the weapon was the same.
His own mistake.
His own daughter.
The truth he tried to hide.
Graham continued:
“The evidence is clear. Julian concealed a child, misrepresented his family status, and endangered the reputation of the Lombardi name.””
The room became cold.
Julian looked destroyed.
Because Graham had turned his crime into a weapon against him.
Then Cesare stood.
Slowly.
“You made one mistake.””
Graham looked at him.
“What?””
“You thought Julian’s shame belonged to you.””
Cesare walked around the table.
“It does not.””
Graham frowned.
Cesare pointed toward Julian.
“My son made a terrible choice.””
A pause.
“But tonight he is facing it.””
Then he looked at me.
“And that is the difference between someone who makes a mistake and someone who refuses to change.””
Nobody spoke.
Graham’s confidence faded.
Cesare continued.
“You wanted proof that Julian abandoned his daughter.””
He picked up the documents.
“Instead, you created proof that you tried to manipulate him.””
Graham’s face hardened.
“That won’t matter.””
“It will.””
“No.””
Graham smiled.
“Because the public will only remember one thing.””
He looked at me.
“They will remember that a Lombardi hid his own child.””
The room became silent.
Then Julian spoke.
Quietly.
Clearly.
“Yes.””
Everyone looked at him.
“I did.””
Graham smiled.
Julian continued.
“And I will live with that.””
A pause.
“But my daughter will not.””
The room changed.
Because for the first time, Julian was not trying to protect his name.
He was protecting mine.
“I will tell the truth publicly.””
Cesare looked at him.
Julian continued.
“Everything.””
Vanessa stared.
“You’ll destroy yourself.””
Julian looked at me.
“No.””
A pause.
“I already did that.””
He took a breath.
“Now I’m trying to rebuild something else.””
Then the boardroom doors opened again.
A lawyer entered quickly.
“Mr. Lombardi.””
Cesare turned.
“What is it?””
The lawyer looked nervous.
“I have an update.””
Everyone waited.
“The emergency review has found something.””
Cesare frowned.
“What?””
The lawyer placed a document on the table.
“We found evidence that the Vale agreement was not the only document created.””
Julian looked confused.
“What else?””
The lawyer looked at him.
“A second agreement.””
A pause.
“One signed before Elsie was born.””
Julian’s face changed.
“By who?””
The lawyer hesitated.
Then answered:
“By someone from the Lombardi family.””
The room went silent.
Cesare stared at the document.
Because if it was true, then the person who started this plan was not Graham Vale.
Not Vanessa.
Not an outsider.
May you like
Someone inside the family had opened the door.
And the signature at the bottom was a name nobody expected to see.
