Chapter 3: The Contract Behind the Lie

The voice on the phone was one I had never heard before.

But the moment my grandfather answered, I knew it mattered.

Cesare Lombardi was not a man who showed fear.

People said that about him all the time.

They said he could sit across from angry investors, powerful politicians, and ruthless competitors without changing his expression.

But that night, backstage at the Aurelia Grand Theater, I watched his face change.

Just slightly.

A tightening around his eyes.

A pause before he spoke.

A silence that made everyone in the room understand that whatever he was hearing was worse than any argument we had just witnessed.

“Repeat that,” Cesare said.

Nobody moved.

The phone remained against his ear.

“Yes,” he continued.

“I’m listening.””

Julian stood frozen.

Vanessa’s hand slowly dropped from my arm.

Even Ethan, who had been ready to fight seconds earlier, looked uncertain.

Cesare looked at Julian.

Not with anger.

With a kind of sadness that made my father look away.

“Where did you get this information?”” Cesare asked the person on the phone.

A pause.

Then:

“Send it to me immediately.””

He ended the call.

For a moment, the only sound was the music from the gala outside.

A violin played a beautiful melody.

It felt wrong.

Because inside the backstage hallway, everything beautiful had been destroyed.

Cesare placed his phone into his pocket.

“Father?”” Julian asked quietly.

Cesare didn’t answer.

He looked at me first.

Then at Maria.

Then at Vanessa.

Finally, he looked at his son.

“Take us somewhere private.””

Julian swallowed.

“Why?””

“Because I want to know how long you planned to erase your own daughter.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“I think this has gone far enough.””

Cesare turned toward her.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

That frightened everyone more than shouting would have.

“It has gone exactly as far as it needed to.””

Security quietly closed the backstage doors.

The guests outside were prevented from entering, but the rumors had already started.

A family scandal at the Lombardi Foundation gala.

A powerful businessman’s son.

A hidden child.

A woman who claimed she never knew the truth.

The kind of story wealthy families spent fortunes trying to bury.

But Cesare was not interested in burying anything anymore.

He led us into his private office behind the theater.

The room was filled with old photographs.

Awards.

Memories.

On the wall was a picture of Julian as a little boy.

I looked at it.

My father had once been small too.

Someone had once protected him.

Someone had once carried him when he was afraid.

Now he stood across from his own child and looked like a stranger.

Cesare placed me gently on a chair beside Maria.

Then he remained standing.

“Start talking.””

Julian sighed.

“Father…”

“No excuses.””

Julian looked exhausted.

“I met Vanessa two years after Elsie’s mother died.””

The room became quiet.

I knew my mother was gone.

But nobody talked about her often.

“She wasn’t prepared for my situation,” Julian continued.

Cesare’s eyes narrowed.

“Your situation?””

Julian looked down.

“My daughter.””

“No.””

Cesare shook his head.

“Say it properly.””

Julian looked confused.

“What?””

“Say what she was.””

Julian’s lips parted.

Then he whispered:

“My daughter.””

Cesare nodded once.

“Continue.””

Julian rubbed his hands together nervously.

“Vanessa came from a different world. She was used to everything being perfect.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“That’s not what happened.””

Cesare looked at her.

“You will speak when I ask.””

For once, Vanessa stayed quiet.

Julian continued.

“She told me her family would never accept a man with… complications.””

The word hung in the room.

Maria looked disgusted.

Cesare looked heartbroken.

“Complications.””

Julian closed his eyes.

“I know how it sounds.””

“No,” Cesare replied.

“You don’t.””

Julian looked up.

Cesare pointed toward me.

“You know what sounds complicated?””

He paused.

“A business merger.””

Another pause.

“A legal dispute.””

Another.

“A financial problem.””

His voice hardened.

“Your child is not a complication.””

Julian lowered his head.

“I made a mistake.””

“No.””

Cesare shook his head.

“A mistake is forgetting an appointment.””

“A mistake is losing paperwork.””

“A mistake is saying the wrong thing when you are nervous.””

He looked directly at his son.

“You made choices.””

Julian had no response.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Julian didn’t do this alone.””

Everyone turned.

She continued:

“You’re acting like he woke up one day and decided to hurt everyone.””

Cesare stared at her.

“Then explain.””

Vanessa hesitated.

For the first time, she looked less confident.

“I told him I needed honesty.””

“Honesty?””

“Yes.””

She looked at Julian.

“I told him I couldn’t marry someone whose life was controlled by old responsibilities.””

Cesare’s expression changed.

“Marry?””

Julian went still.

The room understood.

This was bigger than a relationship.

“You were planning to marry her,” Cesare said.

Julian said nothing.

Cesare laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“You were willing to hide your child for marriage.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Julian looked desperate.

“Father, you don’t understand.””

“Then help me.””

Julian looked at Vanessa.

“She told me her family would give me access to opportunities I couldn’t get alone.””

There it was.

The truth finally beginning to surface.

Cesare stepped closer.

“What opportunities?””

Julian hesitated.

“International expansion.””

Nobody spoke.

“Her father controls several investment groups,” Julian said.

“A partnership with them would have changed everything.””

Cesare stared.

“So this was business.””

Julian immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“But it helped.””

Julian looked away.

That was enough.

Cesare looked sick.

“My son sold his daughter’s identity for a business deal.””

“Stop saying it like that.””

“How should I say it?””

Julian had no answer.

Then Vanessa stood.

“You’re blaming Julian because it’s easier.””

Cesare turned.

“No. I am blaming Julian because he is Elsie’s father.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t know what it’s like to build a future.””

Cesare looked at her.

“I built everything I have while protecting my family.””

He pointed toward me.

“You tried to build yours by destroying hers.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

Then Ethan spoke.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at him.

He stepped forward.

“You’re acting like Vanessa forced him.””

Cesare stared.

“Didn’t she?””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

A strange silence followed.

Because Ethan was no longer defending Vanessa.

He was revealing something.

“She didn’t need to force him.””

Julian looked at him.

“Ethan.””

But Ethan continued.

“Julian already wanted what my family could offer.””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“Stop talking.””

Ethan ignored her.

“He came to us first.””

The room went silent.

Cesare looked at Julian.

“Is that true?””

Julian didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Cesare understood.

“You approached them.””

Julian whispered:

“Yes.””

The disappointment on Cesare’s face was unbearable.

“Why?””

Julian looked at me.

Then quickly away.

“I wanted a better life.””

Cesare’s voice became quiet.

“And you decided Elsie was the price.””

“No.””

“Then what was she?””

Julian looked broken.

“I thought I could fix it later.””

Maria shook her head.

“Later?””

Her voice trembled.

“She’s three years old.””

Julian closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“No,” Cesare said.

“You know now.””

A heavy silence filled the room.

Then Cesare’s phone buzzed.

The message had arrived.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”” Julian asked.

Cesare didn’t answer.

He turned the phone around.

On the screen was a photograph of a document.

A contract.

At the bottom were two signatures.

One belonged to Vanessa’s father.

The other belonged to Julian.

And above the signatures was a sentence that made Julian’s entire secret collapse.

Cesare read it aloud.

“Marriage agreement and inheritance transfer conditions.””

Vanessa went pale.

Julian whispered:

“Father…”

Cesare looked at him.

“Your future was never about love.””

He looked at the contract again.

“It was about what they would give you.””

Then his eyes moved to one final line.

A line Julian had clearly hoped nobody would ever see.

Cesare’s face hardened.

Because the contract did not simply mention Vanessa.

May you like

It mentioned Elsie.

And it explained exactly why Julian had been so determined to make his own daughter disappear.
