Chapter 2: The Daughter He Pretended Not to Have

Ethan Vale took one step forward.

The sound of his shoes against the marble floor echoed through the backstage hallway.

Nobody spoke.

Not the assistants who had stopped carrying costumes. Not the musicians waiting near the curtain. Not the guests who had begun gathering at the entrance, pretending they were only passing by.

Everyone was watching.

Everyone had heard.

Elsie Lombardi was not the housekeeper’s daughter.

She was Cesare Lombardi’s granddaughter.

And Julian Lombardi’s daughter.

The truth that had been hidden for three years had been exposed because of a paper flower made by a little girl who only wanted her father to smile.

Ethan looked at Cesare.

Then he looked at Julian.

“What exactly are you accusing him of?””

Cesare’s expression remained cold.

“I am not accusing anyone.””

He adjusted his hold on me.

“I am asking my son why he erased his own child.””

Julian flinched.

The word erased hit harder than any accusation.

“Father, you’re making this sound worse than it is.””

Cesare stared at him.

“Worse than it is?””

His voice lowered.

“My granddaughter was struck because a woman believed she had no right to exist in this family.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“She was not struck. She was being disciplined.””

The room became colder.

Even Ethan looked at her.

“Vanessa.””

“What?”” she snapped.

“Don’t look at me like that. Julian told me the truth.””

Cesare slowly turned toward her.

“The truth?””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“He told me Elsie was not his daughter.””

I felt my grandfather’s arm tighten around me.

I didn’t understand every word.

But I understood my name.

I understood the way adults looked at me.

Like I was a secret.

Like I was something everyone knew except me.

Cesare looked at Julian.

“Is that what you told her?””

Julian swallowed.

“Father…”

“Answer me.””

Julian looked down.

That was when I saw something I had never seen before.

My father looked ashamed.

But not ashamed because I was hurt.

Ashamed because he had been caught.

“I wanted to protect everyone,” Julian finally said.

Cesare gave a quiet, disbelieving laugh.

“Protect?””

Julian stepped closer.

“Father, you don’t know the situation.””

“Then explain it.””

The room waited.

Julian glanced at Vanessa.

She gave him a small nod.

A silent reminder.

A warning.

He took a breath.

“When I met Vanessa, she didn’t know about Elsie.””

Cesare’s eyes narrowed.

“And why didn’t she know?””

Julian hesitated.

“Because I thought…”

“You thought what?””

Julian looked toward the floor.

“I thought things would be easier.””

Maria, standing near the wall, covered her mouth.

Cesare’s face changed.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

“You thought your daughter was an inconvenience.””

“No.””

“Then what was she?””

Julian had no answer.

Vanessa stepped in.

“Cesare, you are twisting this.””

He looked at her.

“Explain.””

She folded her arms.

“Julian was trying to build a new life.””

“With his daughter?””

“With his future.””

The words hung in the air.

A few guests outside whispered.

Cesare stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked uncomfortable for the first time.

But only for a moment.

“It means Julian had responsibilities before he met me. He had a complicated past.””

I looked at my grandfather.

He looked like he wanted to understand.

Like he was searching for the moment his son had become someone he no longer recognized.

“Elsie is not a complication,” Cesare said.

Vanessa looked away.

“She was, according to Julian.””

Julian immediately said, “That’s not fair.””

Cesare turned to him.

“Not fair?””

His voice shook.

“You allowed another person to believe your child was someone beneath her.””

Julian rubbed his forehead.

“Father, I never wanted this to happen.””

“But you made sure it could.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then Ethan stepped forward again.

“You’re blaming Julian, but you don’t know what Vanessa was promised.””

Cesare looked at him.

“Promised?””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

He realized he had said too much.

Vanessa quickly interrupted.

“Ethan, stop.””

But Cesare heard it.

“What promise?””

Silence.

Julian’s face changed.

A flash of fear.

Real fear.

Not embarrassment.

Fear.

Cesare noticed.

“What did she offer you, Julian?””

“Nothing.””

The answer came too quickly.

Cesare stared at him.

“Nothing?””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide your daughter?””

Julian looked around.

At the people watching.

At the cameras outside.

At the life he had built.

Then he whispered:

“Because I was going to lose everything.””

My grandfather went still.

“Everything?””

Julian looked at Vanessa.

“She had a condition.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Julian.””

He ignored her.

“She said she couldn’t be with someone who had unfinished ties to the past.””

Cesare looked confused.

“Your daughter is not a tie to the past.””

Julian closed his eyes.

“She wanted a family without complications.””

I felt my grandfather’s breathing change.

Slow.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

“So you hid Elsie.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Julian looked at me.

For a second, I thought he might finally come to me.

Instead, he looked away.

That hurt more.

Cesare noticed.

He noticed everything.

“She lived in this house.””

Julian said nothing.

“She ate at your table.””

Nothing.

“She called you father.””

Nothing.

“And you stood there while another woman believed she had permission to hurt her.””

Julian’s shoulders dropped.

“I thought Vanessa would accept her eventually.””

Cesare stared.

“You gambled with your daughter’s heart.””

A tear rolled down my cheek.

I wiped it quickly because I didn’t want anyone to see.

But my grandfather saw.

He always saw.

He kissed my hair.

“You don’t have to hide your tears, sweetheart.””

Vanessa looked irritated.

“She’s manipulating the situation.””

The room went silent.

Cesare slowly turned.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa sighed.

“I mean she knows how to get attention.””

Maria stepped forward.

“She is three years old.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“And three-year-olds learn how to use people.””

Cesare’s expression changed completely.

“Leave.””

Vanessa blinked.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

She laughed nervously.

“Cesare, you can’t be serious.””

“I have never been more serious.””

Julian immediately stepped between them.

“Father, please.””

Cesare looked at him.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“You are still protecting her.””

Julian shook his head.

“No, I’m trying to prevent a scene.””

“A scene?””

Cesare looked around.

“The scene was a child being humiliated backstage at my theater.””

His voice grew sharper.

“The scene was my son pretending his daughter was someone else because a woman demanded a cleaner version of his life.””

Julian’s face turned pale.

Then Ethan moved.

Fast.

He shoved Cesare’s shoulder.

The room erupted.

Maria screamed.

Several guests stepped back.

I buried my face against my grandfather’s chest.

For one second, everyone froze.

Nobody expected Ethan to touch Cesare Lombardi.

Nobody.

Cesare slowly looked at Ethan’s hand.

Then at Ethan.

“You just made a very serious mistake.””

Ethan clenched his fists.

“You think you can ruin my sister’s life?””

Cesare’s eyes narrowed.

“Your sister ruined my granddaughter’s life.””

Ethan stepped forward again.

But this time, security moved.

Cesare raised one hand.

They stopped.

He didn’t need anyone protecting him.

Not from Ethan.

Not from anyone.

Then Vanessa suddenly grabbed my arm.

“Enough. We’re leaving.””

I cried out.

“Grandpa!””

She pulled harder.

Cesare’s entire expression changed.

“Let go of her.””

Vanessa froze.

“She’s coming with us.””

“No.””

“She is not your decision.””

Cesare walked toward her.

“She is my granddaughter.””

Vanessa looked at Julian.

“Say something.””

Everyone turned.

Julian stood there.

The entire room waited.

The moment came.

The moment where he could choose.

His daughter.

Or the lie.

His mouth opened.

“Father…”

My heart sank.

Because he still wasn’t saying my name.

Cesare looked at him.

And I saw something break inside my grandfather.

Not anger.

Not disappointment.

A final decision.

“Julian.””

His voice was quiet.

“Look at your daughter.””

Julian looked at me.

Really looked.

For the first time all night.

I saw tears forming in his eyes.

But then Vanessa whispered:

“Remember what you lose if you choose her.””

Cesare heard.

His eyes narrowed.

“What do you lose?””

Nobody answered.

The question remained hanging in the air.

Then Cesare stepped closer to his son.

And said the one sentence that made Julian’s entire face lose color.

“You didn’t hide Elsie because you were ashamed of being a father.””

A pause.

“You hid her because someone promised you a future where she no longer existed.””

The hallway went silent.

And for the first time, Julian looked terrified.

Because his father had finally found the truth he had spent three years burying.

But before anyone could demand the answer, Cesare’s phone began ringing.

He looked down at the screen.

His expression changed.

The caller’s name was someone nobody expected.

May you like

Someone connected to the secret Julian had been desperate to protect.

And when Cesare answered, the voice on the other end revealed that Vanessa’s lie was only the smallest part of what had been planned.
