Chapter 8: The Promise Made Before Birth

The letter trembled in Julian’s hands.

For several seconds, he didn’t read another word.

He simply stared at the page as if it had become something dangerous.

Something alive.

Something that could reach back through years and destroy every excuse he had ever made.

“Read it,” Cesare said quietly.

Julian looked up.

His eyes were full of confusion.

“I don’t understand.””

“No.””

Cesare’s voice was steady.

“And that is exactly why you need to.””

Julian looked back down.

The room waited.

Even Vanessa.

Especially Vanessa.

Because for the first time that night, she looked like someone who had lost control of the story.

Julian began reading.

The paper shook slightly.

“‘Cesare, if you are reading this, it means I was right to be afraid.’”

My grandfather’s expression changed.

Elena.

My mother.

Even years after she was gone, her words could still reach him.

Julian continued.

“‘I hoped I was wrong. I hoped my fears were only the result of exhaustion and becoming a new mother. But I cannot ignore what I have discovered.’”

He stopped.

Cesare looked at him.

“Continue.””

Julian swallowed.

“‘Someone has been trying to influence the future of the Lombardi family. They are not interested in money alone. They want control.’”

Clara nodded slowly.

“That is what she told me.””

Julian looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Clara’s expression softened.

“Because Elena asked me not to.””

“You knew my mother was afraid of me?””

Clara looked away.

“No.””

A pause.

“She was afraid of what you might become if you were pressured.””

The words hurt him.

Because they were not an accusation.

They were a warning.

Julian continued reading.

“‘Julian does not see it yet. He believes he is making choices for himself. But he is being guided by people who know his weaknesses.’”

His hand lowered.

Everyone looked at him.

Because everyone knew what Elena meant.

His desire to prove himself.

His need to escape his father’s shadow.

His fear of never being enough.

Cesare closed his eyes briefly.

Then Julian kept reading.

“‘If anything happens to me, protect Elsie from anyone who tries to separate her from this family.’”

The room went silent.

I looked at the torn flower still resting in my grandfather’s hand.

Protect Elsie.

That was all my mother wanted.

Not wealth.

Not power.

Not status.

Me.

Julian’s voice became quieter.

“‘Especially from anyone who convinces Julian that losing his daughter is the price of becoming successful.’”

The sentence destroyed him.

He lowered the paper.

“I did exactly that.””

Nobody answered.

Because there was nothing to say.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“This proves nothing.””

Everyone turned.

She looked angry.

But beneath the anger was panic.

“It’s a letter from a dead woman. She was scared. She could have misunderstood things.””

Cesare looked at her.

“You are asking us to ignore evidence because it makes you uncomfortable.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I’m saying Elena was paranoid.””

Clara immediately responded.

“She wasn’t.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You worked for her. You’re biased.””

Clara opened another folder.

“No.””

She placed several documents on the table.

“I was silent because I was afraid.””

Cesare picked them up.

“What are these?””

“Records.””

“Of what?””

“Payments.””

Cesare looked through them.

Then his expression hardened.

“From Vale Holdings.””

Vanessa went quiet.

Julian stared.

“What?””

Clara looked at him.

“Your mother found payments made years before you met Vanessa.””

“To who?””

Clara hesitated.

Then answered:

“To someone connected to your previous legal records.””

Julian frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

Cesare read another page.

Then his face changed.

“Someone was collecting information about you.””

Julian looked confused.

“About me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Until Clara did.

“Because you were the easiest person to manipulate.””

The words landed heavily.

Julian looked hurt.

But he knew there was truth in them.

He had wanted approval.

He had wanted independence.

He had wanted to prove himself.

And someone had used all of it.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You’re all blaming my family.””

Cesare looked at her.

“Your family created the contract.””

“That doesn’t mean we planned everything.””

“Then explain.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Ethan looked at his sister.

And for the first time, he looked disappointed.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“Don’t.””

“You knew more than you told me.””

Her expression changed.

“You’re my brother.””

“That’s not an answer.””

The room became tense.

Ethan looked exhausted.

“I thought it was just about the marriage.””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

“You thought?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“I didn’t know about Elena.””

That caught everyone’s attention.

Cesare looked at him.

“You didn’t?””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Julian.

“I swear.””

Julian stared.

“Then why attack my father?””

Ethan’s face tightened.

“Because I thought he was destroying Vanessa’s future.””

Cesare looked at him.

“And now?””

Ethan looked at me.

A three-year-old girl sitting quietly while adults discussed destroying her life.

His expression changed.

“Now I think I was protecting the wrong person.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You’re choosing them?””

Ethan shook his head.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

The words seemed to break something inside her.

Because Vanessa had spent years believing everyone would follow her.

Her father.

Her brother.

Julian.

But one by one, the people around her were seeing what she had done.

Then Cesare noticed something in the documents.

A date.

He looked closer.

Then looked at Vanessa.

“This payment was made six months before Elsie was born.””

Vanessa froze.

“What?””

Cesare held up the paper.

“You were already involved.””

“No.””

“You knew about Elena before Julian met you.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s impossible.””

Clara looked at her.

“No.””

A pause.

“It isn’t.””

Everyone turned.

Clara spoke slowly.

“Elena met Vanessa once.””

Julian looked shocked.

“Where?””

“At a charity event.””

Vanessa looked away.

“What happened?””

Clara answered:

“Elena confronted her.””

“About what?””

Clara looked at Julian.

“About the same thing happening now.””

The room became silent.

“She warned Vanessa that Julian was being used.””

Vanessa laughed.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Clara ignored her.

“Elena told her she knew someone was trying to remove Elsie from the family.””

Julian stared at Vanessa.

“You knew?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her silence was enough.

Julian stepped back.

“How could you?””

Her face hardened.

“How could I what?””

“Know about my daughter…”

He struggled to say the words.

“…and still help me hide her?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because you chose it.””

The answer was cruel.

But honest.

“You chose the deal.””

Julian looked broken.

“I was manipulated.””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“But you were still the one who signed.””

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the most painful truth.

Julian had been used.

But he had also participated.

Cesare looked at his son.

For the first time, his anger softened.

Not because Julian was innocent.

Because he finally understood.

“You were never only a victim.””

Julian nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“You were also responsible.””

“I know.””

Cesare looked at me.

Then at Julian.

“Now you have to decide what kind of man you are going to be.””

Julian looked confused.

“What?””

“Your entire life, you have wanted to prove you could stand alone.””

Cesare pointed toward the door.

“Now prove you can stand for someone else.””

Julian looked at me.

The room became quiet.

Then he walked toward me.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like he was approaching someone who could disappear if he moved too quickly.

“Elsie.””

I looked at him.

“I know I hurt you.””

My eyes filled.

“I know I made you feel like you weren’t important.””

He knelt down.

“I can’t change what I did.””

A pause.

“But I can change what I do next.””

I didn’t answer.

I didn’t know how.

Then he placed something on the table beside me.

A small box.

I opened it.

Inside was a flower.

Not paper.

A real flower.

A white rose.

“I bought this before the gala,” Julian whispered.

“I was going to give it to you.””

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t you?””

His face broke.

“Because I was afraid someone would see.””

The honesty hurt.

But it was better than another lie.

Before anyone could speak, Cesare’s phone rang again.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Are you certain?””

Everyone watched him.

He slowly lowered the phone.

“What happened?”” Julian asked.

Cesare looked at him.

“The board has called an emergency meeting.””

Julian frowned.

“Why?””

Cesare’s eyes moved to the contract.

Then to Vanessa.

“Because someone has already started the final step.””

“What final step?””

Cesare’s voice became cold.

“They are trying to remove you from the Lombardi family entirely.””

Julian froze.

And then the message arrived.

May you like

The one that revealed the plan had never been to give Julian a new future.

It was to replace him.
