Chapter 9: The Truth Hidden In Plain Sight

Marcus knew that smile.

Not because it was familiar.

Because it was the kind of smile that belonged to someone who believed they had already won.

The man standing in the doorway looked completely calm.

Too calm.

Everyone else in the room was frozen.

But he stood there as if he had walked into a meeting instead of a battlefield.

Marcus stared.

“No.””

The man tilted his head.

“Hello, Marcus.””

The voice confirmed it.

The person he had trusted.

The person who had sat at his dinner table.

The person who had watched Nia grow up.

Ethan Reed.

Nia looked between them.

“Dad?””

Marcus immediately moved in front of her.

Not because he knew what Ethan would do.

Because he didn’t.

And that uncertainty scared him more than anything.

Ethan noticed the movement.

A small smile crossed his face.

“Still protective.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t get to talk about protecting anyone.””

Ethan walked farther inside.

“You should hear the whole story before you judge.””

Amara stepped forward.

“You don’t get to rewrite what happened.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You always were dramatic.””

The room changed.

Marcus saw it.

Amara’s expression.

The anger.

The pain.

The memory.

“You disappeared because you were guilty,” Ethan said.

Amara laughed quietly.

“I disappeared because you threatened my daughter.””

Ethan’s smile faded slightly.

“Careful.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Don’t threaten her.””

Ethan looked at him.

“You still think you’re the hero.””

Marcus didn’t blink.

“No.””

He glanced at Nia.

“I know who I am.””

Ethan looked toward the girl.

For a moment, something strange appeared in his expression.

Not love.

Not warmth.

Ownership.

And Marcus saw it.

That was enough.

“You’re not taking her anywhere.””

Ethan smiled.

“That’s not your decision.””

“She’s my daughter.””

Ethan raised an eyebrow.

“Biologically?””

The question was cruel.

Designed to hurt.

Marcus felt it.

But he didn’t react the way Ethan expected.

Because twelve years had taught him something.

A piece of paper could tell you where someone came from.

It couldn’t tell you who stayed.

“I don’t need biology to be her father.””

Ethan looked amused.

“That’s a nice speech.””

“It’s the truth.””

“No.””

Ethan shook his head.

“The truth is that everyone in this room lied.””

He looked around.

“Amara lied.””

His eyes moved to Daniel.

“Your father lied.””

Then Vanessa.

“She lied.””

Finally, Marcus.

“And you lived in a fantasy.””

Nia looked down.

Marcus noticed.

He hated that Ethan’s words affected her.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at Marcus.

His voice was calm.

But firm.

“You don’t get to stand here and hurt a child because adults made mistakes.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“She deserves to know.””

“She deserves the truth.””

“Yes.””

Ethan smiled.

“And that’s why I’m here.””

He opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Records.

“I have proof.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Ethan.””

He looked at her.

“What?””

“You said you were going to handle this.””

“I am.””

“You’re making it worse.””

Ethan laughed.

“You’re worried about yourself.””

That was the first time Marcus saw Vanessa afraid of him.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“You used me,” she whispered.

Ethan looked at her coldly.

“Everyone serves a purpose.””

The words hit the room.

Because everyone understood.

Vanessa wasn’t his partner.

She was another person he had controlled.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“You knew he was like this?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I suspected.””

“Suspected?””

His voice rose.

“You suspected and said nothing?””

“I was trying to gather proof.””

“For twelve years?””

Daniel lowered his head.

“I failed.””

Ethan smiled.

“Your father always did have a weakness.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

“Guilt.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“He thinks regret fixes everything.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“You destroyed lives.””

Ethan shrugged.

“I built something.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You stole.””

Ethan ignored him.

Instead, he looked at Nia.

“Do you know who I am?””

Nia stayed behind Marcus.

“No.””

Ethan smiled.

“I’m your biological father.””

The sentence landed heavily.

Nia looked at Marcus.

Not Ethan.

Marcus noticed.

And that broke something inside him.

Because even after everything…

She still looked for him first.

Ethan noticed too.

His expression darkened.

“That’s exactly the problem.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

“She already chose you.””

The room went quiet.

Ethan’s voice became colder.

“And that was never supposed to happen.””

Amara stepped forward.

“She was never a possession.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You don’t understand what she represents.””

“She’s a child.””

“She’s an heir.””

Marcus frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Ethan opened the folder.

“Nia is the legal successor to the Carter-Reed trust.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“No.””

Ethan smiled.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“What trust?””

Daniel was silent.

Ethan answered.

“The one your father created before everything happened.””

Marcus felt betrayed all over again.

“How many secrets are there?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“You keep saying that.””

Marcus’s voice broke.

“But every secret you kept made things worse.””

Daniel had no response.

Ethan continued.

“When Nia was born, the trust was transferred to her.””

Marcus stared.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel knew Ethan was unstable.””

Everyone looked at Daniel.

“You knew?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I knew Ethan had problems.””

“Problems?””

Amara’s voice shook.

“He tried to take my baby.””

Daniel looked devastated.

“I know.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Another truth.

Another wound.

Ethan stepped closer.

“And now you understand why everyone wanted control of Nia.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You mean you wanted control.””

Ethan smiled.

“Call it whatever you want.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You don’t get to hide behind words.””

Ethan’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, anger appeared.

“She belongs to me.””

Nia flinched.

Marcus immediately turned.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Ethan continued.

“She has my blood.””

Marcus faced him.

“And she has my love.””

The two men stared at each other.

Then Ethan said:

“You really believe that makes a difference?””

Marcus answered:

“I know it does.””

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A phone ringing.

Everyone looked around.

It was Vanessa’s phone.

She checked the screen.

Her face changed.

“What?””

Marcus noticed.

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

“The police are outside.””

Everyone froze.

Ethan’s confidence vanished.

“How?””

Vanessa looked toward Marcus.

“He called them.””

Marcus didn’t deny it.

He had sent his location before entering the farmhouse.

Ethan stepped backward.

“You planned this.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Ethan laughed.

“You think this ends here?””

“No.””

Marcus looked at Nia.

“It ends when she’s safe.””

The front door opened.

Officers entered.

Ethan immediately raised his hands.

Vanessa stood frozen.

Daniel closed his eyes.

And Amara looked at Nia.

But before Ethan was taken away, he turned back.

His expression was no longer confident.

It was desperate.

“You still don’t know everything.””

Marcus stared.

“What else?””

Ethan smiled faintly.

“The DNA test you saw…”

He looked at Nia.

“It wasn’t the first one.””

Marcus felt cold.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan was led toward the door.

Then he said:

“It means someone changed the results before you ever saw them.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at the folder.

Then at Amara.

Then at Nia.

Because after everything they had uncovered…

May you like

One final lie remained.

And this time, the answer was hidden in the person he trusted most.
