Chapter 7: The Bloodline They Tried To Erase
Marcus felt the world go silent.
Not quiet.
Silent.
The kind of silence that came when the mind refused to accept what the ears had just heard.
“My father?””
The words left his mouth slowly.
Vanessa watched his reaction carefully.
“Yes.””
Marcus stared at her.
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa tilted her head.
“Is it?””
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
Marcus looked toward Amara.
She wasn’t looking at Vanessa.
She was looking at the ground.
And that terrified him.
Because Amara had always been terrible at hiding the truth from him.
Especially when she was hurt.
“Amara.””
She closed her eyes.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
His chest tightened.
“Find out what?””
She looked at him.
“That your father was involved.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“Marcus—”
“No.””
His voice became sharper.
“My father died ten years ago.””
“Yes.””
“So how could he be involved with Nia?””
Vanessa smiled.
“Because he wasn’t just involved with Nia.””
She stepped closer.
“He was involved with Amara.””
The anger that had been building inside Marcus suddenly turned into confusion.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa looked toward the farmhouse.
“Maybe you should let him see.””
Marcus didn’t move.
“What’s inside?””
“Answers.””
“Where’s Nia?””
Vanessa smiled slightly.
“Still your first question.””
“Because she’s my daughter.””
The words came instantly.
No hesitation.
Vanessa noticed.
And for the first time, her confidence weakened.
“You still don’t get it.””
“I get everything I need to know.””
“You raised a child who wasn’t yours.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“And I loved her.””
The sentence stopped Vanessa.
Marcus’s voice became stronger.
“Do you understand that?””
He pointed toward the house.
“Whatever secrets you have, whatever documents you found, whatever lies everyone has been carrying…”
He looked directly into her eyes.
“Nia is my daughter.””
Amara watched him silently.
Because in that moment, she realized something.
Marcus had already chosen.
Not because of blood.
Because of love.
Vanessa looked away.
“You always were emotional.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I was human.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Nia’s voice came again.
“Dad!””
Marcus turned.
“I’m coming!””
Vanessa stepped aside.
“Go ahead.””
The sudden permission made him suspicious.
“What are you doing?””
“I want you to see.””
Marcus slowly walked toward the door.
Amara followed.
Inside, the farmhouse was not abandoned like it looked from outside.
There were rooms filled with old boxes.
Documents.
Photographs.
Files.
A hidden archive.
A lifetime of secrets.
Nia sat in a chair near the fireplace.
Her hands weren’t tied.
But she looked terrified.
The second she saw Marcus, she stood.
“Dad!””
He crossed the room immediately.
“Nia.””
She ran into his arms.
He held her tightly.
For a moment, everything else disappeared.
Not the secrets.
Not Vanessa.
Not the past.
Just his daughter.
“I was scared,” Nia whispered.
“I know.””
“She said you weren’t my real father.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
The words hurt.
But he didn’t let go.
“Nia.””
She pulled back.
“What?””
“I need you to listen to me.””
Her eyes searched his face.
“You are my daughter.””
“But she said—”
“I don’t care what she said.””
His voice was firm.
“I don’t care what any paper says.””
Nia looked confused.
“But if it’s true…”
Marcus touched her shoulder.
“Listen to me.””
She looked at him.
“The person who stays when things are hard matters more than the person whose name is written somewhere.””
Nia’s eyes filled.
“You mean it?””
“I mean it more than anything.””
Behind them, Vanessa watched.
And for the first time, she looked uncomfortable.
Because she had expected the truth to destroy them.
Instead, it had made them stronger.
Amara walked closer.
“Nia.””
The girl froze.
Her eyes moved to the woman standing in front of her.
The woman she had only known from photographs.
The woman she had spent years wondering about.
“Mom?””
Amara covered her mouth.
Hearing the word broke something inside her.
“Yes.””
Nia didn’t move.
She had imagined this moment so many times.
But never like this.
“Why did you leave?””
The question was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Amara looked down.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From who?””
Amara looked at Vanessa.
Nia followed her gaze.
Then looked back.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
The pain in Amara’s face was immediate.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Many times.””
“Then why didn’t I see you?””
Amara had no answer.
And Nia noticed.
That hurt.
“I waited.””
The words broke Amara.
“I know.””
“No.””
Nia stepped back.
“You don’t.””
Marcus watched silently.
Because this was the conversation Nia deserved.
The truth.
Even if it hurt.
“I waited every birthday.””
Amara started crying.
“I know.””
“I kept thinking maybe you forgot where I lived.””
“Nia…”
“I thought maybe I wasn’t enough.””
Amara immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“Never say that.””
“Then why?””
The question was simple.
But it carried twelve years of pain.
Amara had no defense against it.
“I was afraid.””
Nia looked at her.
“I was afraid Vanessa would take you.””
“And she didn’t.””
“No.””
Amara looked at Marcus.
“Because someone else protected you.””
Marcus lowered his eyes.
The moment was interrupted by a sound.
A phone ringing.
Everyone turned.
Vanessa reached into her pocket.
Marcus noticed.
“Whose phone is that?””
She ignored him.
Then answered.
“Yes.””
A pause.
Her expression changed.
Not fear.
Annoyance.
“What do you mean?””
Everyone watched her.
Then Vanessa’s face became pale.
“No.””
She looked toward Marcus.
Then toward Amara.
“That’s impossible.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“What?””
Vanessa ended the call.
For the first time, she looked genuinely shaken.
“What happened?”” Amara asked.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Marcus narrowed his eyes.
“You’re scared.””
She looked at him.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Vanessa looked at Nia.
And something about that look made Marcus move closer to his daughter.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I didn’t do anything.””
“Then what happened?””
She looked toward the folder on the table.
“The original documents were found.””
Amara went still.
“What documents?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Marcus felt a cold wave move through him.
“Found by who?””
Vanessa looked at him.
And whispered:
“Your father.””
Nobody spoke.
Marcus stared.
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“Because he isn’t dead.””
The room froze.
Again.
Another impossible truth.
Another person who was supposed to be gone.
Marcus looked at Amara.
She looked terrified.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“You knew?””
Vanessa didn’t respond.
That was enough.
Marcus stepped forward.
“You knew my father was alive?””
Vanessa whispered:
“He has been waiting for Nia to come home.””
Nia grabbed Marcus’s hand.
“Dad?””
He looked down at her.
And suddenly the truth became clear.
This was never just about the past.
Everyone had been fighting over Nia.
Protecting her.
Hiding her.
Using her.
And now someone who had been missing for years was coming back.
The farmhouse door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
An older man stood in the doorway.
His hair was gray.
His face was older.
But Marcus recognized him instantly.
His father.
Daniel Carter.
The man he had buried ten years ago.
Daniel looked around the room.
His eyes stopped on Nia.
Then Marcus.
And he said the words that destroyed everything Marcus thought he knew:
“I’m sorry, son.””
May you like
A pause.
“I should have told you the truth before they made Nia disappear.””
