Chapter 5: The Father Who Chose Her
Marcus stared at the document in his hands.
The words blurred.
He read them once.
Then again.
Then a third time, hoping that somehow the letters would rearrange themselves into something that made sense.
They didn’t.
The DNA report remained exactly the same.
*Paternity probability: 0%.*
He felt like he was reading a report about someone else’s life.
Not his.
Not Nia’s.
Not Amara’s.
“This is wrong,” he said.
His voice sounded distant.
Amara stood across from him, tears gathering in her eyes.
“I wish it was.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
“I do.””
“No, you don’t.””
He held up the paper.
“Twelve years.””
His fingers tightened around it.
“Twelve years I raised her.””
“I know.””
“I was there when she took her first steps.””
His voice cracked.
“I stayed awake every night when she had nightmares.””
Amara’s expression broke.
“I know.””
“I taught her how to ride a bike.””
“I know.””
“I held her when she asked why she didn’t have a mom.””
His eyes filled.
“I told her you loved her.””
Amara looked away.
“You were right.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“You were right.””
She stepped closer.
“Nia’s entire life, one thing was never a lie.””
Her voice trembled.
“She was loved.””
Marcus looked down.
The document suddenly felt meaningless.
Because regardless of what the paper said, he remembered every moment.
Every scraped knee.
Every school project.
Every bedtime story.
Every time Nia reached for his hand.
“She’s my daughter.””
Amara nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You need to understand something.””
He placed the DNA report on the table.
“Biology doesn’t decide that.””
Amara wiped her tears.
“I never wanted you to find out like this.””
“Then why did you disappear?””
The question changed the air between them.
Amara looked toward the broken windows of the abandoned clinic.
Because the answer was painful.
“Because Vanessa found out.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Tell me everything.””
Amara sat down slowly.
For years, she had carried the story alone.
Now, finally, she let it out.
“When I was pregnant with Nia, I found out something about Vanessa.””
Marcus remained standing.
“What?””
“She was involved in financial crimes.””
He frowned.
“My sister?””
“She was using people’s identities. Moving money through fake accounts.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“I saw the records.””
“You must have misunderstood.””
Amara looked at him sadly.
“That’s what Vanessa wanted everyone to believe.””
Marcus remembered the photograph.
The warning in the letter.
Do not trust Vanessa.
“What does that have to do with Nia?””
Amara took a breath.
“Everything.””
She opened another document inside the folder.
“When I was pregnant, I discovered the truth about Nia’s biological father.””
Marcus looked at the paper.
A name was written there.
A name he recognized.
Someone from Vanessa’s past.
Someone he had met.
“Ethan Reed.””
Amara nodded.
Marcus felt his stomach drop.
Ethan had been Vanessa’s closest friend years ago.
A businessman.
A man Marcus had never trusted.
“He and Vanessa were connected.””
“How?””
Amara looked at him.
“They were trying to hide a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
She hesitated.
Then said:
“Nia’s existence.””
The words felt like a knife.
Marcus stared.
“Why would they care about a baby?””
“Because Nia was proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Ethan had a child he never wanted anyone to know about.””
Marcus looked away.
The pieces started connecting.
The lies.
The secrets.
The disappearance.
“Vanessa helped cover it up.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Amara’s voice became quiet.
“Because she was protecting him.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
His own sister.
The person he trusted.
The person who had comforted him after Amara supposedly died.
She had known.
She had known everything.
“When did you find out?””
“Three months before I disappeared.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You planned to tell me.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
Amara’s eyes filled.
“Because Vanessa threatened me.””
The room became silent.
“She said if I exposed the truth, she would make sure I lost Nia.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“She threatened my child?””
“She said you would never believe me.””
“That’s insane.””
“I know.””
Amara looked down.
“But she knew something about you.””
“What?””
“She knew your biggest weakness.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“What weakness?””
“Your need to protect everyone.””
He said nothing.
Because it was true.
Vanessa had always known.
She knew he would sacrifice himself before letting someone else suffer.
“She told me she would make it look like I abandoned Nia.””
Amara continued.
“She said she would make you hate me.””
Marcus’s face hardened.
“And it worked.””
The words hurt both of them.
Amara nodded.
“Yes.””
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Marcus asked the question he had been avoiding.
“Where have you been all these years?””
Amara looked down.
“Running.””
“From Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
“Why come back now?””
Her eyes moved toward him.
“Because she found Nia.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Amara’s voice became urgent.
“She knows where Nia is.””
His phone suddenly rang.
The sound made both of them jump.
Marcus looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
His heart raced.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A familiar voice responded.
“Marcus.””
His blood turned cold.
Vanessa.
“Where are you?””
He didn’t answer.
She continued.
“You found Amara.””
Marcus looked at Amara.
She looked terrified.
“How do you know that?””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Because I know everything you do.””
Marcus gripped the phone.
“Where is Nia?””
A pause.
Then Vanessa said:
“That’s exactly what I wanted to ask you.””
His face changed.
“What?””
“She left school early today.””
The world stopped.
Marcus stood completely still.
“No.””
Vanessa continued.
“She received a message from someone claiming to be her mother.””
Amara covered her mouth.
“No…”
Marcus felt panic rising.
“What did you do?””
“I didn’t do anything.””
Vanessa’s voice became colder.
“But if you want to find your daughter…”
A pause.
“You need to understand something.””
Marcus tightened his grip.
“What?””
“You were never Nia’s protector.””
The words cut.
“You were her hiding place.””
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“It means you spent twelve years protecting a secret that was never yours.””
The call ended.
Marcus immediately called Nia.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Amara stepped closer.
“She’s with Vanessa.””
Marcus looked at her.
“How do you know?””
“Because this is what she wanted.””
His phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
One photo.
Marcus opened it.
His entire body went cold.
It was Nia.
Sitting in the backseat of a car.
Her face frightened.
Beside her was Vanessa.
May you like
And underneath the picture was a message.
*“Come alone, Marcus. It’s time Nia learns who her real family is.””*
