Chapter 6: The Family Built On Lies

Marcus read the message again.

Then again.

Each time, the photograph became harder to look at.

Nia’s face was the only thing he saw.

Not Vanessa.

Not the car.

Not the words beneath the picture.

Just his daughter’s frightened eyes.

His daughter.

No DNA report could change that.

No secret could erase twelve years.

No person could take away every night he spent making sure she felt safe.

He turned toward Amara.

“She has her.””

Amara stood immediately.

“I know.””

Marcus grabbed his jacket.

“I’m going.””

Amara reached for his arm.

“No.””

He stopped.

“She has my daughter.””

“And that’s exactly why you can’t walk in there without thinking.””

His eyes narrowed.

“She kidnapped a child.””

“I know what Vanessa does when she feels cornered.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What are you saying?””

Amara’s voice lowered.

“She wants you angry.””

“She wants me to come.””

“Yes.””

“Then I’ll go.””

“No.””

The firmness in Amara’s voice surprised him.

“She wants you to react. She wants you to forget everything except saving Nia.””

Marcus stared.

“That’s what a father does.””

Amara’s eyes softened.

“And that’s why she chose you.””

The words hit him.

Because it was true.

Vanessa knew him.

She knew exactly what he would do.

Run toward danger.

Ask questions later.

Marcus looked at the photo again.

“What choice do I have?””

Amara took a slow breath.

“We make a plan.””

He almost laughed.

“A plan?””

“Yes.””

“She has Nia.””

“And if you walk into Vanessa’s trap alone, she will have you too.””

Marcus went quiet.

The anger inside him fought against the part of him that knew Amara was right.

After twelve years apart, he wanted to ask her a thousand questions.

Why she left.

Why she didn’t find another way.

Why she allowed him to suffer.

But none of that mattered now.

Nia mattered.

Only Nia.

“Where would she take her?””

Amara looked toward the old clinic.

“There is somewhere Vanessa used before.””

“Where?””

“A farmhouse outside town.””

Marcus frowned.

“How do you know?””

“Because it’s where she kept the documents.””

“What documents?””

“The ones proving what she did.””

A cold feeling moved through him.

“You think she’s there?””

“I think she wants you there.””

Marcus took out his phone.

“I’m calling the police.””

Amara looked worried.

“Not yet.””

He looked at her sharply.

“Not yet?””

“If Vanessa thinks law enforcement is coming, she’ll move Nia.””

Marcus hated the logic.

But he knew it was possible.

He had spent years studying people.

And Vanessa was someone who always stayed three steps ahead.

His phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time, from Vanessa.

*“You have one hour.””*

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“She’s counting on me being desperate.””

Amara nodded.

“Yes.””

He looked at her.

“Then let’s disappoint her.””

The farmhouse sat at the end of a dirt road surrounded by empty fields.

The kind of place where nobody would notice a car parked for hours.

Marcus stopped a short distance away.

Amara sat beside him.

Neither spoke.

The building looked abandoned.

But Marcus knew better.

Vanessa had never done anything without a purpose.

“She’s inside,” Amara whispered.

“How do you know?””

“She likes places where she feels in control.””

Marcus looked at the house.

“You’ve been here before.””

Amara didn’t answer.

That answer was enough.

He turned toward her.

“Amara.””

She closed her eyes.

“I came here after I left.””

His expression changed.

“You came back to Vanessa?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

“To find out what she planned to do.””

“And?””

Amara looked at the farmhouse.

“I found out she never planned to let Nia have a normal life.””

Marcus felt his hands tighten.

“Why?””

“Because Nia is the only person who can expose her.””

Before Marcus could ask more, a sound came from the house.

A door opening.

They both froze.

A figure appeared.

Vanessa.

She looked almost exactly as Marcus remembered.

Perfectly styled hair.

Expensive clothes.

A confident smile.

But now he saw something else.

Coldness.

She stepped onto the porch.

“You came.””

Marcus got out of the car.

“Where is Nia?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Not even hello?””

“You kidnapped my daughter.””

Her smile disappeared slightly.

“Your daughter?””

The words were deliberate.

Marcus felt anger rise.

“Where is she?””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That everything you built was based on a lie.””

Amara stepped out of the car.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

For the first time, real emotion appeared.

“You.””

Amara stared back.

“You didn’t think I would come back?””

“I thought you were smarter.””

“I thought you were family.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Family?””

She looked at Marcus.

“See? That’s the word everyone keeps using.””

She stepped closer.

“Family.””

Her eyes moved between them.

“But nobody asks what happens when family becomes a burden.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“Where is Nia?””

Vanessa ignored him.

“Do you know what’s funny, Marcus?””

“I’m not interested.””

“You should be.””

She smiled.

“Because for twelve years, you thought you were the hero.””

Marcus said nothing.

“You saved a child.””

She pointed toward the house.

“You raised her.””

She looked at Amara.

“But you never asked why everyone was willing to let you.””

Amara’s expression changed.

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice sharpened.

“Let him hear it.””

Marcus looked between them.

“Hear what?””

Vanessa smiled.

“The reason Amara ran.””

Amara stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa continued.

“She didn’t leave because of me.””

Marcus looked at Amara.

“What?””

Amara’s face went pale.

“Vanessa, stop.””

“She left because she was afraid you would hate her.””

Marcus felt confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Ask her.””

He looked at Amara.

“Is that true?””

Amara couldn’t answer.

And that scared him more than anything.

“Amara.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“The truth about what happened the night Nia was born.””

Marcus stared.

Amara looked at him.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She whispered:

“Because Nia wasn’t supposed to survive.””

The world seemed to stop.

Marcus stared at her.

“What?””

Amara looked down.

“When she was born, there was a complication.””

He shook his head.

“She was healthy.””

“Yes.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Amara’s voice broke.

“I’m saying someone tried to make sure she never came home.””

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

The silence said everything.

“No.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Now you’re starting to understand.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You tried to hurt a baby?””

Vanessa’s expression remained calm.

“I tried to protect my family.””

“Your family?””

She pointed toward the house.

“Nia is not just a child.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“She’s a threat.””

“To what?””

Vanessa looked at Amara.

“To everything Amara and I buried.””

Suddenly, a voice came from inside the house.

A frightened voice.

“Dad?””

Marcus’s heart stopped.

“Nia!””

He moved toward the door.

Vanessa immediately blocked him.

“Not yet.””

Marcus stared at her.

“If you hurt her—”

“I won’t.””

“Then move.””

Vanessa smiled.

“You want your daughter back?””

“Yes.””

“Then you need to know the truth first.””

Marcus looked toward the house.

He could hear Nia crying.

Every instinct screamed at him to push past Vanessa.

But something stopped him.

Because Vanessa looked too confident.

She wanted him to enter.

She wanted him emotional.

She wanted him unaware.

“What truth?””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“The truth about why Nia’s biological father disappeared.””

Marcus froze.

Vanessa whispered:

“Because he didn’t disappear.””

A silence followed.

Then she said the name.

May you like

A name that made Marcus’s blood turn cold.

“Your father.””
