Chapter 9: The Final Message From My Father

The footsteps grew louder.

Slow.

Measured.

Whoever was walking through the penthouse wasn’t rushing.

They weren’t afraid.

That terrified Nathaniel more than anything.

A person breaking into a home expected resistance.

A person who knew they were in control walked calmly.

The emergency lights flashed red across the walls, turning the luxurious penthouse into something unfamiliar.

A place that had once represented success.

Now it felt like a trap.

Daniel stood in front of Nathaniel.

A protective instinct that made no sense.

They had met less than an hour ago.

Yet somehow, this stranger who claimed to be his brother was standing between him and danger.

“Stay behind me,” Daniel said.

Nathaniel stared at him.

“You don’t even know me.””

Daniel looked back briefly.

“I’ve known you my whole life.””

The answer surprised him.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel’s expression softened.

“When I was taken away, your father gave me one instruction.””

“What?””

“Protect your little brother if you ever get the chance.””

Nathaniel felt something tighten in his chest.

Before he could respond, a voice came from the hallway.

“You always were too emotional, Daniel.””

Everyone froze.

A figure stepped into the red light.

Nathaniel recognized him immediately.

The gray suit.

The silver hair.

The calm expression.

The man looked exactly like someone who belonged in a boardroom, not a darkened penthouse.

Nathaniel’s face changed.

“No.””

Thomas whispered:

“It can’t be.””

The man smiled.

“Hello, Thomas.””

Nathaniel looked between them.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

The man stepped closer.

Then he said:

“My name is Victor Whitmore.””

Nathaniel felt the blood drain from his face.

Whitmore.

Another family name.

Another secret.

“Who are you?””

Victor looked at him.

“The person who has been cleaning up your family’s mistakes for thirty years.””

Daniel’s hands tightened into fists.

“You.””

Victor smiled.

“You remember me.””

“You took me.””

“I saved you.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You stole my life.””

Victor tilted his head.

“You were a child surrounded by people who were destroying each other.””

“You lied to me.””

“I gave you a purpose.””

Nathaniel looked at Daniel.

“What is he?””

Daniel answered without looking away.

“My grandfather’s brother.””

Nathaniel froze.

Another Whitmore.

Another hidden branch of the family.

Victor looked at him.

“You’re very curious, Nathaniel.””

“I’m tired of secrets.””

“Good.””

Victor smiled.

“Because tonight, you finally learn everything.””

Nathaniel stepped forward.

“You tried to kill my mother?””

Victor looked toward Evelyn.

“No.””

Everyone stared.

“What?””

Victor smiled.

“Isabella did that.””

Isabella’s face hardened.

“Don’t put this on me.””

Victor looked at her.

“But it was your idea.””

Silence.

Nathaniel turned slowly.

“What?””

Isabella looked away.

“I…”

Victor continued.

“You wanted revenge.””

Nathaniel stared at her.

“You knew him?””

Isabella didn’t answer.

Victor laughed softly.

“She thought she was working against the Whitmores.””

He looked at Nathaniel.

“She didn’t realize she was working for one.””

The realization hit.

Nathaniel looked at Isabella.

“Why?””

Her face changed.

The confidence disappeared.

“Because my family lost everything.””

“Because you thought my father destroyed them.””

“Yes.””

“But Victor told you that.””

A pause.

Isabella looked at Victor.

That was enough.

Nathaniel felt sick.

“You used her.””

Victor smiled.

“I gave her the truth she wanted.””

“No.””

Nathaniel shook his head.

“You gave her a lie.””

Victor didn’t deny it.

Instead, he walked toward the table.

Toward the black box.

“The only problem with secrets is that eventually someone finds them.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“You were behind everything.””

Victor looked at him.

“You always were smarter than you looked.””

Thomas’s face hardened.

“You killed Alexander.””

Victor smiled.

“No.””

Everyone waited.

“I didn’t kill him.””

Nathaniel narrowed his eyes.

“Then what happened?””

Victor looked at the box.

“Your father discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That his own father had built the company on stolen money.””

Nathaniel stared.

“And you?””

“I tried to fix it.””

Daniel laughed.

“By destroying everyone?””

Victor looked at him.

“You were young. You didn’t understand.””

“I understood enough.””

Victor ignored him.

“Alexander wanted to expose everything.””

Nathaniel frowned.

“Then why did he disappear?””

Victor’s expression changed slightly.

“Because someone convinced him there was another way.””

“Who?””

Victor looked at Evelyn.

Nathaniel turned.

His mother looked horrified.

“No.””

Victor smiled.

“Tell him.””

Nathaniel’s heart dropped.

“Mom?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know.””

“Know what?””

Victor continued.

“Your father planned to reveal everything.””

Nathaniel looked at him.

“And?””

“He needed protection.””

“From you?””

“No.””

Victor smiled.

“From himself.””

The answer made no sense.

Nathaniel’s frustration exploded.

“Stop speaking in riddles.””

Victor looked at him.

“Alexander discovered that the evidence could destroy more than criminals.””

“What does that mean?””

“It meant your family name would collapse.””

Nathaniel stared.

“So he hid it.””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Victor smiled.

“You already know.””

Nathaniel looked at Daniel.

The key.

The key his brother carried.

Daniel slowly stepped forward.

“My father gave me this because he knew I would remember.””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

“Remember what?””

Victor looked at him.

“The place.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

A memory surfaced.

A small boy.

A frightened father.

A rainy night.

A hidden room.

Daniel opened his eyes.

“The old house.””

Nathaniel frowned.

“What old house?””

“Our first home.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“The lake house.””

Victor smiled.

“Exactly.””

Nathaniel looked confused.

“The lake house was sold years ago.””

“No,” Evelyn whispered.

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“It was never sold.””

Nathaniel stared.

“Mom?””

“It was hidden.””

Another secret.

Another impossible truth.

Victor stepped closer.

“Your father knew someone would eventually come searching.””

Nathaniel looked at him.

“Why tell me all this?””

Victor smiled.

“Because you are going to give me what I want.””

Nathaniel’s expression hardened.

“And if I don’t?””

Victor looked toward Evelyn.

Then Daniel.

Then Isabella.

A quiet threat.

Nathaniel understood.

“You’ll hurt them.””

“I prefer cooperation.””

Nathaniel stared.

“You’re not getting anything.””

Victor laughed softly.

“You sound exactly like Alexander.””

The sentence hit differently.

Because for the first time, Nathaniel realized something.

Victor wasn’t angry.

He was afraid.

“You need the key.””

Victor’s smile disappeared slightly.

Nathaniel noticed.

“You don’t have it.””

Nobody moved.

Victor’s expression tightened.

“The key opens the lake house.””

“Yes.””

“And you need Daniel.””

Victor said nothing.

Nathaniel continued.

“You could have taken it anytime.””

A pause.

“But you couldn’t.””

Daniel looked at Nathaniel.

“You figured it out.””

Nathaniel looked at Victor.

“You spent thirty years searching for something you couldn’t access.””

Victor’s face darkened.

“So?””

“So now you need us.””

The room became silent.

Nathaniel took a step forward.

For the first time that night, he wasn’t reacting.

He was thinking.

Planning.

Like his father.

Victor noticed.

And something like fear appeared in his eyes.

“You’re more like him than I expected.””

Nathaniel smiled coldly.

“I’ll take that as a compliment.””

Then the penthouse doors suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Breathing heavily.

Holding a small envelope.

Nathaniel froze.

Because he recognized her.

Not from tonight.

From childhood.

From old photographs.

Margaret’s voice came through the speakers.

“No…”

The woman stepped into the room.

And said:

“Nathaniel, don’t trust him.””

Victor turned.

His expression changed completely.

Because the woman standing there was supposed to be impossible.

The woman who had been controlling the screens.

The woman who had revealed every secret.

Margaret.

But this Margaret looked terrified.

She looked at Victor.

And whispered:

“You were never protecting this family.””

A pause.

“You were the one who destroyed it.””

Victor’s face went cold.

Then Margaret held up the envelope.

“I have Alexander’s final message.””

Nathaniel stared.

“Final?””

Margaret nodded.

“He knew this moment would come.””

Victor took one step forward.

“Give me that.””

Margaret backed away.

“No.””

Her eyes moved to Nathaniel.

“Your father wrote this for you.””

Nathaniel looked at the envelope.

“What does it say?””

Margaret’s voice trembled.

“It says the person you should fear most…”

She looked directly at Victor.

“…is not the person who betrayed him.””

May you like

A pause.

“It’s the person who made him disappear.””
