Chapter 7: The Brother Who Came Back From the Dead

Nobody moved.

The elevator doors remained open.

The man standing inside looked completely calm.

Too calm.

Like he had walked into this penthouse a hundred times before.

Like he belonged there.

Nathaniel couldn’t take his eyes off him.

The stranger had dark hair touched with gray. A sharp jawline. A scar running along the side of his left eyebrow.

But it was his eyes that made Nathaniel unable to look away.

Because they were familiar.

Not familiar like someone he had met.

Familiar like something buried deep inside his memory.

A childhood feeling.

A shadow from a dream.

“Who are you?””

Nathaniel’s voice barely sounded like his own.

The man stepped out of the elevator.

“I think you already know.””

“No.””

Nathaniel shook his head.

“No, I don’t.””

The man looked at Evelyn.

And the pain on his face was immediate.

“Hello, Mom.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

A sound escaped her.

Not a scream.

Not a cry.

Something broken.

“Daniel…”

The name hung in the room.

Nathaniel looked at his mother.

Then back at the man.

“Daniel?””

The man nodded.

“My name is Daniel Whitmore.””

Nathaniel stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel gave a sad smile.

“That’s what everyone told me too.””

Thomas stepped forward.

His hand moved instinctively toward the security device on his belt.

But Daniel noticed.

“Still protecting them, Thomas?””

Thomas froze.

“You know me?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I know everyone who was there that night.””

The words sent a chill through the room.

Nathaniel looked at Thomas.

“What night?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel walked farther into the penthouse.

His eyes moved across the room.

The paintings.

The furniture.

The photographs.

A strange sadness crossed his face.

“I wondered if it would still feel like home.””

Nathaniel stepped between him and Evelyn.

“Stay away from my mother.””

Daniel stopped.

For a moment, he looked hurt.

Then he nodded.

“I understand.””

“Do you?””

Nathaniel’s voice sharpened.

“You show up after thirty years and expect me to believe you’re my brother?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I don’t expect you to believe anything.””

“Good.””

“I came because you deserve the truth.””

Nathaniel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Daniel glanced at the others.

“Then everyone has failed you.””

The sentence was quiet.

But it hit hard.

Nathaniel studied him.

“If you’re really my brother…”

Daniel waited.

“Where have you been?””

The question seemed to hurt him more than any accusation.

Daniel looked down.

“Somewhere my father hoped nobody would find.””

Nathaniel frowned.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“You knew my father?””

Daniel nodded.

“He saved my life.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Nathaniel noticed.

“Mom?””

She didn’t respond.

Daniel looked at her.

“You never told him.””

Evelyn whispered:

“I wanted him to have a normal life.””

Daniel’s expression softened.

“He deserved the truth.””

Nathaniel turned toward his mother.

“You knew he was alive?””

A long silence.

Then Evelyn nodded.

The betrayal hurt more than he expected.

“You knew?””

“Nathaniel…”

“You knew I had a brother.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he was alive.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing.””

Evelyn began crying.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

Nathaniel looked away.

The same words.

Again.

Protection.

Secrets.

Lies.

Daniel stepped forward.

“She wasn’t the only one.””

Nathaniel looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

Thomas lowered his eyes.

Nathaniel’s chest tightened.

“You knew too.””

Thomas didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You all knew.””

Nobody denied it.

Nathaniel laughed quietly.

“I can’t believe this.””

His voice shook.

“I spent my entire life thinking I was alone.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You weren’t.””

“But I was.””

The words were painful.

“You all made sure I was.””

Daniel accepted the anger.

He didn’t argue.

“You have every right to hate us.””

Nathaniel stared.

“Hate you?””

He shook his head.

“I don’t even know you.””

The sentence hurt Daniel.

Nathaniel saw it.

For some reason, that made him even angrier.

Because a stranger was hurt by his words.

A stranger who claimed to be his brother.

Daniel reached into his coat.

Immediately, Thomas moved.

But Daniel only pulled out a small object.

A worn leather bracelet.

Nathaniel froze.

He recognized it.

Not because he remembered wearing it.

Because he had seen it in an old photograph.

A photograph of two children.

One toddler.

One older boy.

His father had kept the picture hidden in a drawer.

Nathaniel had found it once.

He remembered asking:

“Who is that?””

And his mother had taken the picture away.

“This is yours.””

Daniel held out the bracelet.

“Your father made this for me.””

Nathaniel didn’t take it.

“He told me to give it to you if I ever found you.””

Nathaniel stared.

“If you ever found me?””

Daniel nodded.

“He was afraid we would never meet.””

The room became quiet.

Nathaniel finally took the bracelet.

The leather was worn.

Old.

Real.

Daniel watched him.

“He used to say you were stubborn.””

Nathaniel looked up.

“What?””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“He said you would argue with anyone if you thought something was wrong.””

Despite everything, Nathaniel felt something strange.

A connection.

A tiny piece of familiarity.

“He knew me?””

Daniel nodded.

“He watched you grow.””

“How?””

Daniel looked away.

“From a distance.””

Nathaniel’s heart tightened.

“My father was alive?””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

“How long?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Longer than you think.””

Nathaniel stared.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“She knows.””

Everyone turned.

Evelyn’s face went pale.

“Nathaniel…”

“No.””

He stepped back.

“I’m done with half-truths.””

Daniel nodded.

“He lived for twelve years after he disappeared.””

Nathaniel felt like the air had been knocked out of him.

“Twelve years?””

“Yes.””

“He was alive while I was growing up?””

“Yes.””

“Where was he?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Running.””

“From who?””

“The people who wanted him dead.””

Nathaniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

Toward the city below.

“The same people who are still watching this family.””

A cold silence followed.

Isabella finally spoke.

“So you knew.””

Everyone looked at her.

Daniel’s eyes moved to her.

“And you’re Isabella.””

She looked surprised.

“You know me?””

“I know your family.””

Her expression hardened.

“Then you know why I’m here.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“You don’t?””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“You came here because someone convinced you that the Whitmores destroyed your family.””

Isabella’s face changed.

Because it was true.

“And they were wrong.””

Her jaw tightened.

“Prove it.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I can.””

“How?””

“Because the person who destroyed both our families…”

He paused.

“…was not Alexander Whitmore.””

Nathaniel watched them.

“Then who was it?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Someone your father trusted.””

The room fell silent.

Nathaniel already knew that answer.

Or thought he did.

“Thomas?””

Thomas looked shocked.

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not Thomas.””

Nathaniel frowned.

“Then who?””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

Toward the photograph on the wall.

A photograph of the Whitmore family from decades ago.

Then he said:

“The person who betrayed your father is the reason I was taken.””

Nathaniel felt a chill.

“Who?””

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“The person who raised me after I disappeared.””

A terrible realization formed.

Nathaniel whispered:

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

The elevator doors behind them suddenly closed.

Everyone turned.

Because nobody had pressed the button.

Thomas rushed toward the control panel.

“Someone is overriding the system.””

Nathaniel looked at Daniel.

“What’s happening?””

Daniel’s face changed.

For the first time, fear appeared.

“They found me.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the penthouse entrance.

The lights flickered.

Then every screen in the apartment turned on at once.

Security monitors.

Television.

Tablets.

All of them showed the same image.

A person sitting in darkness.

Nathaniel stepped closer.

The figure spoke.

A voice he recognized.

A voice from his childhood.

A voice that made Evelyn collapse into the chair.

Because she knew it too.

“Hello, Nathaniel.””

The screen went brighter.

And the person revealed their face.

Nathaniel stopped breathing.

Because the person looking back at him was someone who had been dead for years.

Someone who knew every secret.

Someone who had been controlling the game from the beginning.

Then the voice said:

“I think it’s time you learned what your mother and brother have been hiding from you.””

May you like

A pause.

“And what your father begged me never to reveal.””
