Chapter 10: The Truth My Father Left Behind
Nobody moved.
The envelope in Margaret’s hand seemed heavier than anything Nathaniel had ever seen.
Not because of the paper inside.
Because of everything it represented.
Thirty years of lies.
Thirty years of unanswered questions.
Thirty years of people claiming they were protecting him.
And now, finally, the truth was standing in front of him.
Victor stared at Margaret.
The calm expression he had worn all night was gone.
For the first time, Nathaniel saw something different.
Fear.
“Give me the letter.””
Margaret shook her head.
“No.””
Victor stepped forward.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
Margaret laughed quietly.
“I understand perfectly.””
“You’re putting everyone in danger.””
“No.””
Her eyes hardened.
“You did that thirty years ago.””
Nathaniel looked between them.
“Someone please tell me what is happening.””
Margaret looked at him.
And for the first time since appearing on the screen, she looked like the woman he remembered.
The woman who loved him.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology caught him off guard.
Nathaniel said nothing.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
His answer was immediate.
Margaret nodded.
“I know.””
“You let me believe my father abandoned me.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe my brother was dead.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
Nathaniel looked away.
The pain was too complicated.
Because part of him hated her.
And another part remembered the woman who held his hand when he was sick.
The woman who sat beside his bed during thunderstorms.
The woman who made him feel safe.
“How many people knew?””
Margaret looked down.
“Too many.””
“And how many lied?””
Nobody answered.
Nathaniel looked at Victor.
“You.””
Victor remained silent.
Nathaniel stepped closer.
“You lied to everyone.””
Victor’s expression returned to cold.
“I did what was necessary.””
“Necessary?””
Nathaniel laughed.
“You destroyed families.””
“I prevented something worse.””
“You kidnapped my brother.””
“I saved him.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You took me from my mother.””
Victor looked at him.
“You were eight years old.””
“And you made sure I never came home.””
“You were safer with me.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“No child is safe with someone who steals them.””
The words hit harder than any accusation.
Victor looked away.
Nathaniel noticed.
There was something behind Victor’s confidence.
Something broken.
But Nathaniel no longer cared.
Too much had been taken from him.
Margaret held out the envelope.
“Nathaniel.””
He looked at her.
“This is yours.””
He took it.
The paper felt old.
Fragile.
Like it had been waiting decades for his hands.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a single page.
His father’s handwriting.
Again.
The sight alone almost broke him.
He began reading.
*Nathaniel,*
*If you are holding this letter, then the people I feared have finally found you.*
Nathaniel’s breathing slowed.
*I wish I could have been there to tell you everything myself. I wish I could have watched you become the man you are today.*
His eyes burned.
*But my greatest responsibility was keeping you alive.*
He continued.
*The truth is simple, but dangerous. Our family’s wealth was built on a foundation of betrayal. Your grandfather made choices that hurt many people. When I discovered the truth, I tried to correct it.*
Nathaniel glanced at Victor.
*Victor believed protecting the Whitmore name mattered more than protecting the people inside it.*
The room went silent.
Victor’s expression changed.
*He made sacrifices in the name of loyalty. He destroyed lives while believing he was saving ours.*
Nathaniel looked up.
Victor said nothing.
The letter continued.
*But Victor was not the first betrayal.*
Nathaniel frowned.
Not the first?
*The person who started this was someone I trusted completely. Someone who stood beside me every day.*
Nathaniel looked at Thomas.
Thomas lowered his eyes.
Then the letter revealed the truth.
*Thomas Reed discovered the financial crimes before I did.*
The room froze.
Nathaniel looked at Thomas.
“No.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
Nathaniel felt numb.
The man who protected him.
The man who raised him.
The man he trusted.
“You?””
Thomas looked at him.
“I didn’t know how far it went.””
“But you knew.””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Thomas swallowed.
“The night your father disappeared.””
Nathaniel stepped back.
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“And you let him vanish.””
Thomas’s eyes filled with regret.
“I tried to stop it.””
“Did you?””
Thomas had no answer.
That was the answer.
Nathaniel looked back at the letter.
He kept reading.
*Thomas was not the person who planned my disappearance. But he made the mistake that allowed it to happen. He trusted the wrong person.*
Nathaniel looked up.
Victor stared at Thomas.
“You see?””
Thomas looked at him.
“I was wrong.””
Victor smiled.
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
“You were weak.””
Thomas’s face hardened.
“No. I was afraid.””
The admission surprised everyone.
Thomas continued.
“I was afraid of losing everything.””
Nathaniel stared.
“And my father?””
Thomas looked down.
“I lost him anyway.””
Silence.
Nathaniel returned to the letter.
*Nathaniel, there is one final truth you must know.*
He continued.
*The person who betrayed me was not trying to steal my company. They were trying to erase the evidence.*
Nathaniel’s eyes moved.
*Because the evidence proved something much worse.*
He turned the page.
There was only one sentence.
A sentence that changed everything.
*You were never my only child.*
Nathaniel stopped.
His heart pounded.
He looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
Nathaniel read the line again.
Then below it.
*Daniel was not the only child taken from this family.*
Nobody spoke.
Nathaniel looked at Evelyn.
“Mom?””
She started crying.
“I didn’t know.””
“What don’t you know?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Your father never told me everything.””
Margaret stepped forward.
“There was another child.””
Daniel looked stunned.
Another child?
Nathaniel felt the world becoming impossible again.
“How many secrets are there?””
Margaret looked at him sadly.
“Only one more.””
The room went quiet.
Nathaniel stared.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then the penthouse lights flickered.
The security system activated.
A message appeared on the main screen.
A file transfer.
Thomas looked at it.
“What is that?””
Margaret’s face changed.
“No.””
Nathaniel turned.
“What?””
She whispered:
“The final recording.””
The screen turned black.
Then a video appeared.
Alexander Whitmore.
Thirty years younger.
Alive.
Sitting in a dark room.
Nathaniel stopped breathing.
His father looked directly into the camera.
“If you are watching this…”
Alexander paused.
His expression was tired.
“But I hope I am wrong.””
Nathaniel couldn’t look away.
His father continued.
“I need you to understand something. The person who will bring you this message is not your enemy.””
The camera moved slightly.
A small child appeared beside him.
A baby.
Nathaniel’s heart stopped.
Alexander looked at the child.
“This is your sister.””
The room exploded into silence.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Daniel stepped back.
Nathaniel couldn’t speak.
A sister.
Another child.
Another missing piece.
Alexander continued.
“Her name is Lily.””
The video shook.
His father looked frightened.
“I had to hide her because the people coming after us were not interested in money anymore.””
A pause.
“They wanted the Whitmore bloodline gone.””
Nathaniel stared at the screen.
“Where is she?””
Alexander looked back at the camera.
“I don’t know.””
The answer broke something inside him.
“But I know one thing.””
The video ended with his father’s final words.
“Someone has been protecting her all these years.””
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Then Victor quietly said:
“She was never supposed to be found.””
Nathaniel turned.
“What?””
Victor looked at him.
And Nathaniel understood.
Victor wasn’t surprised.
He knew.
“You know where she is.””
Victor said nothing.
Nathaniel stepped closer.
“You know where my sister is.””
Still nothing.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A small smile.
Not from Victor.
From Isabella.
Everyone turned.
Isabella looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
Nathaniel stared at her.
“Why are you looking at Victor like that?””
She didn’t answer.
“Isabella.””
Her lips trembled.
“I…”
Nathaniel’s voice lowered.
“What?””
She looked at him.
And whispered the truth nobody expected.
“Because I know Lily.””
The room went silent.
Nathaniel felt his heart stop.
“How?””
Isabella looked at the floor.
“Because…”
May you like
A tear fell down her face.
“She’s my sister.””
