Chapter 3: The Secret Buried for Thirty Years

The rooftop terrace went completely silent.

Even the city noise below seemed to disappear.

Nathaniel stared at his mother.

For thirty years, he had carried one simple truth in his heart.

His father left.

That was the story.

The story everyone knew.

The story Evelyn had repeated whenever he asked.

“He wasn’t ready to be a father.””

“He made his choice.””

“He walked away.””

Nathaniel had spent his entire childhood trying to understand how someone could abandon his own family.

Now his mother was telling him something impossible.

Something that changed everything.

“He was forced to disappear?””

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

The water from her robe dripped onto the stone floor.

“Yes.””

Nathaniel felt like the ground beneath him had shifted.

“By who?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

And that silence scared him more than any confession.

“Mom.””

Her hands trembled.

“Nathaniel…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I need you to tell me.””

Isabella stood a few feet away, watching.

For once, she wasn’t smiling.

She looked almost satisfied.

Because she had opened a door she knew could never be closed again.

“Tell him,” Isabella said quietly.

Nathaniel turned toward her.

“You knew about this?””

She crossed her arms.

“I knew enough.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means your mother has been lying to you for years.””

Evelyn looked at her with anger.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“No?””

Isabella laughed softly.

“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””

Nathaniel looked between them.

“What happened to my father?””

Nobody answered.

Then Evelyn slowly walked toward one of the terrace chairs and sat down.

She looked suddenly older than she had moments ago.

Not seventy-five.

Older.

Like someone who had carried a secret too heavy for too long.

“Your father’s name was Alexander Whitmore.””

Nathaniel frowned.

“I know his name.””

“No.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You know the name on your birth certificate.””

A cold feeling moved through his body.

“What are you saying?””

She took a shaky breath.

“Your father was not just a businessman.””

Nathaniel said nothing.

“He was investigating people.””

“People?””

“Powerful people.””

The wind moved through the terrace.

Nathaniel glanced at Isabella.

She was listening carefully.

Too carefully.

“What kind of people?””

Evelyn looked away.

“The kind who don’t forgive betrayal.””

Nathaniel felt a knot forming in his stomach.

“Mom, this sounds like something from a movie.””

“I wish it was.””

She closed her eyes.

“Your father discovered someone inside his company was stealing from him.””

Nathaniel slowly shook his head.

“Who?””

Evelyn looked at Isabella.

Then away.

“Nathaniel…”

“Who?””

Her voice dropped.

“Your grandfather.””

The words hit harder than expected.

Nathaniel stared.

“My grandfather?””

“Your father’s father.””

“But he died before I was born.””

“Yes.””

“Mom, that doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

Evelyn gripped the edge of the chair.

“Because the truth was hidden.””

Nathaniel felt his heartbeat quicken.

“Hidden by who?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“By everyone who benefited from it.””

A sharp laugh came from Isabella.

“Convenient.””

Nathaniel turned.

“What?””

“She waited until now to tell you?””

Isabella stepped forward.

“After thirty years?””

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“I was protecting him.””

“Protecting him from what?””

“From the same people who took his father.””

Nathaniel looked at Isabella.

Something about her reaction bothered him.

She wasn’t surprised.

She wasn’t confused.

She looked like someone hearing information she already knew.

“You knew,” Nathaniel said.

Isabella’s eyes narrowed.

“Knew what?””

“You knew about my father.””

A pause.

Too long.

Then she smiled.

“I researched your family before I married into it.””

The answer was honest.

But somehow worse.

“You investigated us?””

“I wanted to understand your world.””

“No.””

Nathaniel shook his head.

“You wanted to understand what you could take.””

Isabella’s face hardened.

“You really think that’s all this is?””

“What else would it be?””

She looked at Evelyn.

“Ask your mother why she kept a locked box hidden in this penthouse.””

Nathaniel turned immediately.

“What box?””

Evelyn froze.

And that was the answer.

Nathaniel stared.

“Mom?””

She looked away.

“Where is it?””

“Nathaniel…”

“Where is the box?””

Her silence confirmed everything.

Isabella smiled slightly.

“I found it six months ago.””

Nathaniel’s stomach dropped.

“Where?””

“Inside the wall behind the library shelves.””

The library.

His father’s old room.

A room Evelyn rarely entered.

A room Nathaniel thought was simply filled with memories.

“What was inside?””

Isabella looked at Evelyn.

“Tell him.””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t want you involved.””

“You were already involving me.””

“I wanted you safe.””

“Safe from what?””

She whispered:

“From knowing.””

Nathaniel turned away, frustrated.

His entire life suddenly felt like a carefully built house with cracks hidden beneath the walls.

“What was inside the box?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then she said:

“Documents.””

“What kind of documents?””

“Financial records.””

“About my father?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

She looked down.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Alexander didn’t leave us.””

Nathaniel swallowed.

“Then where did he go?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with pain.

“He disappeared because he found out someone was planning to destroy him.””

A cold silence followed.

Nathaniel looked at Isabella.

“You knew about the box.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew my father was investigating something.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Isabella didn’t answer.

Nathaniel stepped closer.

“How did you know?””

Her jaw tightened.

For the first time, she looked uncomfortable.

“I told you. I researched your family.””

“That’s not enough.””

“It is.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“You knew exactly what buttons to push with my mother.””

Isabella looked away.

“You knew about her fears.””

“You knew about the medication.””

“You knew about the inheritance.””

Nathaniel stepped closer.

“And now you magically know about my father.””

The silence grew.

Then Isabella said:

“Your father was connected to my family too.””

Nathaniel stopped.

“What?””

Evelyn stood quickly.

“No.””

The fear in her voice was immediate.

Nathaniel looked at her.

“What does she mean?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Don’t listen to her.””

“Mom.””

“Please.””

But Nathaniel couldn’t look away from Isabella.

“How was your family connected to mine?””

Isabella’s expression changed.

The confident woman disappeared.

Something darker replaced it.

“My grandfather worked for your father.””

Nathaniel waited.

“And?””

“And he was blamed for the fraud Alexander discovered.””

Evelyn whispered:

“No.””

Isabella continued.

“Your father destroyed my family’s reputation.””

Nathaniel stared.

“So this is revenge?””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“This is justice.””

The word made Nathaniel uncomfortable.

Because suddenly the story had changed.

There were no longer just victims and villains.

There were hidden histories.

Old wounds.

Secrets passed from one generation to another.

But none of that changed what he had witnessed.

“You still tried to kill my mother.””

Isabella looked at Evelyn.

“She ruined my family.””

Nathaniel’s eyes narrowed.

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

A long pause.

Then Isabella said quietly:

“No.””

Nathaniel waited.

“No, I didn’t try to kill her.””

He looked confused.

“What?””

“I wanted her scared.””

The confession hung in the air.

“You pushed her into a jacuzzi.””

“Yes.””

“She couldn’t get out.””

“I knew you would come.””

Nathaniel froze.

“What?””

Isabella looked at him.

“I knew you would find her.””

A terrible realization spread through him.

“What were you planning?””

Isabella smiled faintly.

“To make you see what I wanted you to see.””

Nathaniel’s expression changed.

“You wanted me to think my mother was unstable.””

“Yes.””

“You wanted me to believe she fell.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Isabella looked toward the city.

“Because tomorrow morning, the lawyers were supposed to file paperwork.””

“What paperwork?””

“Guardianship.””

Nathaniel felt sick.

“But not against my mother.””

Isabella slowly turned back.

“Against you.””

A cold silence.

“What?””

She stepped closer.

“Your father didn’t leave you just a company.””

Nathaniel stared.

“What are you talking about?””

“Your inheritance has a condition.””

Evelyn’s face went pale.

“No…”

Isabella looked at Nathaniel.

“You were never supposed to control everything until you learned the truth.””

“What truth?””

She smiled.

“The truth about why your father disappeared.””

Nathaniel felt his heartbeat pounding.

“And you know?””

“Yes.””

“Tell me.””

Isabella reached into her purse and pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Yellowed.

Worn.

She held it out.

“This was found with the documents from the box.””

Nathaniel didn’t move.

“What is it?””

“A letter.””

“From who?””

Isabella looked directly into his eyes.

“Your father.””

Nathaniel stared at the envelope.

Thirty years.

Thirty years of questions.

Thirty years of believing he was abandoned.

And suddenly the answer was sitting inches away.

But before he could take it, Isabella pulled it back.

“Before you read this…”

Her voice lowered.

“You need to know one thing.””

Nathaniel looked at her.

“What?””

She glanced at Evelyn.

Then whispered:

“Your mother wasn’t the only person your father was afraid of.””

Nathaniel felt a chill.

“Who else?””

Isabella slowly looked toward the penthouse door.

Toward the darkness inside.

Then she said:

“The person who has been protecting your family’s secret all these years…”

May you like

She paused.

“…is standing in this room with us.””
