Chapter 9: The Last Piece of Evidence

Vanessa chose an abandoned storage building outside the city.

I almost didn’t go.

But something told me I needed to.

When I arrived, she was sitting in her car.

Her eyes were red.

“You came.””

“I want answers.””

She nodded.

“You deserve them.””

Inside the building was a small box.

She handed it to me.

“I kept this for seventeen years.””

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

A recording device.

“What is this?””

“The truth.””

I looked at her.

“Why now?””

“Because I’m tired of being afraid.””

She sat down.

“Richard ruined my life.””

I stayed silent.

“He knew I was the only person who could expose him.””

“Why?””

“Because I saw everything.””

I turned.

“Everything?””

Vanessa nodded.

“The night Ethan disappeared.””

My heart raced.

“Tell me.””

She looked at the floor.

“Daniel didn’t plan to take you.””

“What?””

“Richard did.””

The words hit me.

“Then why did Dad do it?””

“Because Richard convinced him it was the only option.””

She opened the box.

Inside was a recording.

“Listen.””

The audio was old.

A man’s voice.

Richard.

*“You have two choices, Daniel. Lose your son forever, or do what I tell you.””*

My blood ran cold.

Then my father’s younger voice.

*“I can’t do this.””*

Richard replied:

*“You already did.””*

The recording ended.

I couldn’t move.

Vanessa whispered:

“I found it years later.””

“Why didn’t you release it?””

“Because Richard threatened my family.””

I looked at her.

“You had a choice.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Tears fell from her eyes.

“And I made the wrong one.””

For the first time, I saw Vanessa clearly.

Not as a villain.

Not as innocent.

As someone who failed.

A person who lived with that failure every day.

“I’m sorry, Ethan.””

I looked away.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

That night, we took everything to the authorities.

The investigation reopened.

Richard’s influence started collapsing.

People who had protected him for years finally started talking.

But one question remained.

My father.

He met me outside the courthouse.

“I don’t expect forgiveness.””

I looked at him.

“Good.””

He nodded.

“I just want you to know something.””

“What?””

“You were never unwanted.””

That sentence broke something inside me.

Because that was the fear I had never admitted.

That maybe all the lies meant I had never truly belonged anywhere.

My father stepped closer.

“You were loved.””

I swallowed.

“Then why wasn’t love enough?””

He had no answer.

Months passed.

The truth became public.

Richard faced charges.

The story spread.

The boy who was told his mother died had found the woman who never stopped looking.

But even after everything, I still had one question.

Why did Richard choose me?

Why did he fight so hard to control my life?

The answer came when Michael called.

“Ethan.””

His voice sounded serious.

“We found something else.””

“What?””

“A document from before you were born.””

“What kind of document?””

“A family trust.””

I frowned.

“So?””

Michael hesitated.

“It was created in your name.””

I felt confused.

“What does that mean?””

“It means your grandfather didn’t want you because you were his grandson.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then why?””

Michael answered:

“Because the money was supposed to become yours when you turned eighteen.””

My birthday.

My eighteenth birthday.

The reason behind everything.

Richard wasn’t protecting me.

He was protecting an inheritance.

Then Michael said one more thing.

“The account activates tomorrow.””

I looked at the calendar.

My birthday was tomorrow.

And suddenly, I understood.

The entire nightmare had been built around one day.

May you like

The day I became an adult.

The day I could finally control my own life.
