Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Curtain
Richard Carter had always been a shadow in my life.
A name.
A photograph.
A person everyone avoided.
But when Vanessa said his name on the phone, I realized something.
My grandfather wasn’t a ghost from the past.
He was still moving pieces.
Still controlling people.
Still hiding things.
The next morning, Sarah and I met with a private investigator she had hired years earlier.
His name was Michael.
He was older, with tired eyes and a notebook full of evidence.
“I’ve followed this case for twelve years,” he said.
I looked at Sarah.
“Twelve?””
She nodded.
“I never stopped.””
Michael placed a folder on the table.
“Your mother was not the only person searching.””
I opened the folder.
Inside were reports.
Photos.
Bank records.
“What is this?””
“Your grandfather’s payments.””
My eyes moved across the documents.
Several names.
Several dates.
And one name repeated.
Vanessa.
I looked up.
“She took money?””
Sarah looked shocked too.
Michael shook his head.
“No.””
He pointed at the records.
“She returned every payment.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because she was trapped.””
I remembered Vanessa’s words.
She was scared.
“She tried to leave?””
Michael nodded.
“She attempted to tell Sarah where Ethan was.””
My heart stopped.
“When?””
“Two years after your disappearance.””
Sarah leaned forward.
“What happened?””
Michael turned a page.
“She was threatened.””
“By Richard?””
“Yes.””
The pieces slowly connected.
But one question remained.
“Why would Vanessa stay?””
Michael looked at me.
“Because Richard knew something about her.””
“What?””
He hesitated.
Then handed me another document.
I read it.
And felt my stomach twist.
A police report.
Vanessa’s name.
A car accident.
Years before she met my father.
“She had a record?”” I asked.
Michael shook his head.
“No conviction.””
“Then why does it matter?””
“Because Richard used it against her.””
Sarah looked angry.
“He ruined her life to keep her quiet.””
Michael nodded.
“That was his method.””
The more I learned about Richard, the less he seemed like a person.
He seemed like a machine.
A machine built to control everyone around him.
That afternoon, I went to see my grandfather.
I found him at his mansion outside the city.
He wasn’t surprised.
“You finally came.””
I stood in the doorway.
“You knew I would.””
He smiled.
“Of course.””
“You planned everything.””
He poured himself a drink.
“You make it sound dramatic.””
“You kidnapped my childhood.””
His expression didn’t change.
“Careful.””
“Why?””
“Because anger makes people say things they regret.””
I stepped closer.
“I want answers.””
Richard looked at me.
“Your mother was unstable.””
“Stop.””
“She would have taken you away.””
“She was my mother.””
“And I was protecting your future.””
I laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
His eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“My father. Vanessa. You.””
I shook my head.
“You all use the same excuse.””
Richard walked toward me.
“You think the world is simple because you’re young.””
“No.””
I looked him directly in the eyes.
“I think people who love you don’t erase you.””
For the first time, his expression changed.
A tiny crack.
“You have your mother’s mouth.””
“Good.””
He smiled slightly.
“You don’t know what she did.””
“Then tell me.””
He looked away.
“I won’t.””
“Why?””
“Because some truths destroy families.””
I stepped back.
“My family was destroyed by lies.””
Before I left, Richard said something.
Something that made me stop.
“Ask Sarah why she never told you about your real father.””
I turned.
“What?””
Richard smiled.
“Ask her who Daniel was protecting you from.””
I felt cold.
Because for the first time, Richard didn’t sound like someone defending himself.
He sounded like someone revealing a different secret.
When I found Sarah that night, she knew immediately something was wrong.
“What did he tell you?””
I stared at her.
“Who is my real father?””
Her face changed.
May you like
And that was the moment I knew.
There was another lie.
