Chapter 4: The Man Who Owned the Truth

I had spent seventeen years believing my family was ordinary.

A father.

A stepmother.

A quiet neighborhood.

A normal life.

But normal families didn’t have secret documents hidden in drawers.

They didn’t have missing mothers.

They didn’t have grandparents who appeared like threats.

The next morning, an unfamiliar black sedan stopped outside our house.

An older man stepped out.

He wore an expensive suit and carried himself like someone who expected people to move aside.

My father went pale when he saw him.

“Richard.””

The man smiled.

“Daniel.””

I watched from the porch.

Sarah stood beside me.

Her hands were shaking.

“Who is he?”” I asked.

She looked at the man.

“Your grandfather.””

The word felt strange.

I had never met him.

Never heard his name.

Yet he looked at me like he already knew me.

Richard walked closer.

“So this is Ethan.””

I didn’t answer.

He smiled.

“You look exactly like your father.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Richard looked at her.

“You’re still dramatic.””

My stomach tightened.

He spoke to her like she was a child.

Like he owned her.

“I want answers,” I said.

Richard looked amused.

“Everyone does at your age.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I want the truth.””

He studied me.

Then laughed softly.

“Your mother always had that fire.””

Sarah’s expression changed.

“You don’t get to talk about me.””

Richard ignored her.

“Daniel made difficult choices.””

I looked at my father.

“Did you?””

Daniel looked away.

Richard continued.

“Your father was young. He was afraid. Sarah was unstable.””

“She wasn’t,” I said.

Richard smiled.

“You’re defending someone you met yesterday.””

“And you’re defending someone who lied for seventeen years.””

That wiped the smile from his face.

For the first time, he looked angry.

“You don’t understand what your mother was capable of.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Tell him why you hate me.””

Richard said nothing.

“Tell him why you helped Daniel take my child.””

The silence answered.

I looked at my father.

“You didn’t do this alone.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Ethan.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I need the truth.””

Richard sighed.

“You were never supposed to know.””

Those words stayed with me.

Not “I’m sorry.””

Not “we made mistakes.””

Never supposed to know.

Like my own life was a secret.

That evening, Sarah showed me one final thing.

A video.

It was old.

Grainy.

She pressed play.

A young version of my mother appeared on screen.

Holding me.

Talking to the camera.

“Ethan, if you’re watching this, it means something happened.””

I felt my throat tighten.

Her younger face smiled.

“I want you to know something.””

She looked down at baby me.

“I fought for you.””

The video shook.

Her voice broke.

“I never abandoned you.””

Then the camera moved.

A sound came from somewhere off-screen.

A man shouting.

Sarah quickly turned.

The video ended.

I looked at her.

“Who was that?””

She didn’t answer.

“Sarah.””

She closed her eyes.

“That was your father.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a voice whispered:

“Stop searching for the past.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

The voice replied:

“Someone who knows why you really got that scar.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Sarah looked at me.

“What happened?””

I slowly lowered it.

May you like

The only words I could say were:

“He knows.””
