Chapter 9: The Last Move
Naomi watched the video one more time.
Not because she needed to.
Because she needed to understand.
The man on the screen had looked directly into the camera.
Directly at her.
He wanted her to know he was not hiding.
He wanted her to know he was waiting.
And that was the most dangerous thing about him.
People who hid were afraid.
People who waited were confident.
“Who is he?”” Naomi asked again.
Marcus remained silent.
That silence told her everything.
“You know him.””
Marcus looked down.
“Yes.””
“Then tell me.””
The old house seemed to grow colder around them.
Marcus took a slow breath.
“His name is Victor Hale.””
Arthur’s expression changed immediately.
“Hale?””
Marcus nodded.
“Richard Hale’s son.””
Nobody spoke.
The connection was clear.
Richard Hale.
The man who destroyed Clara’s life.
The man who manipulated Arthur.
The man behind decades of secrets.
And now his son had taken control of the game.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“You worked for him?””
Marcus’s face tightened.
“Years ago.””
Naomi looked at him.
“How many years?””
“Before I knew who he really was.””
That answer bothered her.
Because Naomi knew something about people.
The most dangerous lies were usually mixed with truth.
“You were protecting him.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“Then what were you doing?””
Marcus looked toward the window.
“I was trying to bring him down.””
Nobody moved.
“Victor Hale built his father’s network into something bigger. Smarter. Harder to detect.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“That explains why the evidence disappeared.””
Marcus continued.
“He learned from Richard’s mistakes. He stopped threatening people openly. He stopped leaving obvious trails.””
Naomi stared at the video again.
“And he found me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Marcus looked at the necklace around her neck.
“Because your father was right.””
Naomi frowned.
“About what?””
“You are the last piece.””
The words followed her everywhere.
The key.
The files.
The evidence.
Everyone needed something from her.
But nobody had asked what she wanted.
Until now.
Naomi looked at Gabriel.
“Where is Clara’s evidence?””
Gabriel pointed toward the box.
“Hidden here.””
Daniel opened it carefully.
Inside were hundreds of pages.
Financial records.
Photos.
Names.
Dates.
A lifetime of secrets.
Marcus scanned the documents.
“This is enough.””
Gabriel shook his head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“This is only what Victor expects us to find.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?””
Gabriel pulled out a small envelope.
“He always leaves people a trail.””
Naomi understood immediately.
“A distraction.””
Gabriel nodded.
“Victor wants us focused on Richard’s crimes.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Richard is already dead.””
Silence.
Naomi looked at him.
“What?””
Gabriel looked surprised.
“You didn’t know?””
Nobody answered.
“Richard Hale died six months ago.””
Arthur closed his eyes.
The timing.
The manipulation.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Victor had inherited more than money.
He had inherited unfinished business.
“He doesn’t want to protect his father’s legacy,” Daniel said.
Gabriel nodded.
“He wants to finish what his father started.””
Naomi looked back at the video.
Victor standing inside Whitmore House.
Smiling.
Confident.
Waiting.
“What does he want?””
Gabriel answered quietly.
“The original files.””
Naomi touched the necklace.
“But he already knows about the key.””
“Yes.””
“Then why hasn’t he taken it?””
Nobody answered.
Until Daniel did.
“Because he doesn’t want the key.””
Naomi looked at him.
“What?””
“He wants you to open it.””
A chill went through the room.
Naomi understood.
Victor could steal the evidence.
He could take the necklace.
But he could not access what was inside without Naomi.
He needed her willingly.
That meant he had planned everything.
The maid job.
Whitmore House.
The engagement party.
Vanessa’s attack.
Every event had pushed Naomi closer to this moment.
“He brought me here.””
Maria nodded sadly.
“Yes.””
Naomi looked at her.
“You knew.””
Maria hesitated.
“I suspected.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Maria looked hurt.
“I knew someone was trying to bring you back into the fight.””
Naomi’s voice became colder.
“And you let it happen?””
“I was watching you.””
Naomi stared.
“I was protecting you.””
Naomi laughed softly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
She looked around the room.
“Everyone protects me by lying to me.””
Nobody responded.
Because nobody could deny it.
Then Arthur stepped forward.
“You’re right.””
Everyone looked at him.
The billionaire lowered his head.
“I spent my entire life believing power meant controlling everything.””
A pause.
“But all I did was allow people to hide the truth from me.””
He looked at Naomi.
“I am sorry.””
It was a simple apology.
But from Arthur Whitmore, it meant something.
Because powerful people rarely admitted they were wrong.
Naomi looked away.
She was not ready to forgive everyone.
But she was ready to stop running.
“We go back.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Naomi.””
“He has my family.””
Marcus corrected gently.
“He has people inside the house.””
Naomi looked at him.
“And that’s why we go now.””
They returned to Whitmore House twenty minutes later.
But the mansion they entered was different.
The lights were on.
The doors were unlocked.
No security stopped them.
No employees greeted them.
It was silent.
Too silent.
Naomi immediately knew.
“This isn’t right.””
Marcus nodded.
“Everyone is gone.””
They moved through the halls.
The ballroom looked exactly as they had left it.
Except for one thing.
The tables had been cleared.
The decorations removed.
The cameras were active.
All of them pointed toward the center of the room.
A chair sat beneath the chandelier.
And sitting in it was Victor Hale.
Vanessa stood nearby.
Her expensive dress was torn slightly.
Her confidence was gone.
For the first time since Naomi met her, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid.
Victor smiled.
“Welcome home.””
Naomi stepped forward.
“Let her go.””
Victor looked amused.
“Still protecting people.””
“That’s what I do.””
“No.””
He stood.
“That’s what you were trained to do.””
He walked slowly around the room.
“You know, Naomi, I always wondered what kind of person could survive everything you survived.””
She watched him carefully.
“What do you want?””
Victor smiled.
“The same thing everyone wants.””
“No.””
Naomi’s voice hardened.
“You want control.””
His smile widened.
“Exactly.””
He held up a small device.
“The key.””
Naomi said nothing.
“You have spent your entire life carrying something you never understood.””
Victor stepped closer.
“And I spent my entire life trying to find it.””
Naomi looked at Vanessa.
“Why her?””
Victor glanced back.
“She was useful.””
Vanessa looked furious.
“You said you would protect me.””
Victor laughed.
“I said whatever I needed to say.””
For once, Vanessa realized she had been treated the same way she treated others.
As disposable.
Naomi noticed.
And even though she did not forgive Vanessa, she understood something.
Nobody in this room was safe.
Victor placed the device on the table.
“Open the files.””
Naomi stared.
“No.””
Victor sighed.
“I was hoping you would make this easier.””
“You can’t force me.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“But I don’t need to.””
He pressed a button.
The ballroom screen turned on.
A live feed appeared.
Arthur’s eyes widened.
Because the camera showed the underground vault beneath Whitmore House.
And inside the vault was something impossible.
A person.
Someone they thought was gone.
Victor looked at Naomi.
“You see?””
Her face changed.
Because on the screen…
Clara Whitmore was alive.
But she was injured.
And standing beside her was someone Naomi never expected.
Someone she trusted.
Victor leaned closer.
“Now you understand.””
Naomi stared at the screen.
Because the person beside Clara turned toward the camera.
And smiled.
It was Evelyn.
Victor whispered:
“Your friend has been working for me from the beginning.””
The room went silent.
Naomi looked at Evelyn on the screen.
And felt the last piece of her world collapse.
May you like
Because this time…
She had no idea who was telling the truth.
