Chapter 4: The Enemy Inside the House

The engine disappeared into the darkness before anyone at Whitmore House realized there was nothing left to chase.

By the time security reached the front gates, the vehicle was already gone.

No license plate.

No clear description.

No useful footage.

Only one thing remained.

A message.

A warning.

A reminder that someone from Naomi’s past had found her.

Again.

The ballroom slowly returned to motion, but it was not the same room anymore.

The music had stopped.

The champagne had gone untouched.

The guests who had arrived to celebrate a wedding announcement were now whispering about secrets, hidden identities, and a former security specialist who had been living among them as a maid.

Vanessa Sterling hated every second of it.

Not because she was afraid.

At least, that was what she told herself.

She hated that Naomi had become interesting.

For months, Naomi had been someone Vanessa could look down on.

An employee.

A person beneath her.

But now everyone was looking at Naomi like she was someone important.

Someone dangerous.

Someone worthy of respect.

Vanessa walked toward Alexander.

“This needs to end.””

Alexander looked at her.

“What?””

“This entire performance.””

His eyebrows tightened.

“Performance?””

“Yes.””

She lowered her voice.

“A random man arrives, starts accusing people, and suddenly everyone believes the maid is some kind of hero?””

Alexander stared at her.

“She saved people.””

“You don’t know that.””

“I know Marcus Vale.””

Vanessa paused.

That name caught her attention.

“You do?””

Alexander looked uncomfortable.

“My father used to hire his firm.””

“For what?””

Alexander didn’t answer immediately.

And that silence bothered Vanessa.

Because Alexander was usually confident.

Tonight, he looked uncertain.

“Alexander.””

He looked toward Naomi.

“I don’t know everything.””

That was the first time Vanessa had ever heard him admit that.

And it scared her.

Across the room, Naomi stood beside Arthur Whitmore while Marcus explained the security breach.

“You need to leave,” Marcus said.

Naomi looked at him.

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“Naomi.””

“No.””

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand exactly.””

She looked around the mansion.

At the walls.

The cameras.

The employees.

The family.

“This person found me because I was hiding.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“And now?””

“Now I stop hiding.””

For years, Naomi had convinced herself that walking away was the right choice.

She told herself she was protecting herself.

But deep down, she knew the truth.

She had been waiting.

Waiting for the fear to disappear.

Waiting for the memories to become less painful.

Waiting for the past to stop following her.

It never did.

Arthur approached slowly.

“Naomi.””

She turned.

The old billionaire looked different now.

Not like an employer.

Like someone who felt betrayed by his own assumptions.

“I owe you an apology.””

Naomi shook her head.

“For what?””

“For seeing only what you allowed me to show.””

She looked at him.

“You gave me a chance.””

“And you protected my home without me knowing.””

A small smile appeared on his face.

“I suppose we are both guilty of hiding things.””

Naomi almost smiled.

Almost.

Then Arthur became serious.

“But I need to know something.””

“What?””

“Are we in danger?””

The question was simple.

But Naomi knew what it meant.

Not just tonight.

Not just the gala.

The entire house.

She looked toward the security cameras.

“Yes.””

Arthur nodded slowly.

“Because of you?””

Naomi looked at him.

“No.””

A pause.

“Because of what someone thinks I know.””

Marcus watched her carefully.

“You still have no idea where the files are?””

Naomi looked away.

“No.””

“That’s not true.””

Her eyes moved back to him.

Marcus crossed his arms.

“You’re doing it again.””

“Doing what?””

“Protecting everyone by keeping information to yourself.””

Naomi said nothing.

Because he was right.

Three years earlier, Daniel Cross had trusted her with the most important evidence of his life.

A hidden drive containing financial records.

Names.

Transactions.

Proof that powerful people had been moving money through fake companies.

Naomi never looked at the files.

She never wanted to know.

Her job was to protect the evidence.

Not investigate it.

But after the attack, the drive vanished.

Everyone assumed the attackers found it.

Except Naomi.

She had always wondered.

What if they never found it?

What if someone else had taken it?

Someone who knew exactly where she would hide it.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“You know something.””

Naomi looked at him.

“I know someone betrayed Daniel.””

“And?””

“And I know whoever did it has enough power to erase evidence and silence witnesses.””

Marcus nodded.

“That’s why I found you.””

Naomi frowned.

“What?””

He reached into his coat pocket and removed a small envelope.

“This was delivered to me two weeks ago.””

Naomi stared.

“Why didn’t you show me earlier?””

“Because I didn’t know if it was a trap.””

He handed it to her.

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a single photograph.

Her hands froze.

It was a picture of the Whitmore estate.

Taken from outside.

Not recently.

Years ago.

Before Naomi ever worked there.

Marcus watched her reaction.

“You recognize it?””

Naomi looked closer.

The photograph showed the back entrance of Whitmore House.

And standing beside the doorway was a younger Arthur Whitmore.

But he was not alone.

A woman stood next to him.

A woman Naomi had never seen before.

“She’s important,” Marcus said.

Naomi looked at him.

“How do you know?””

“Because Daniel Cross had the same photograph.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“What?””

Marcus nodded.

“Before the attack, Daniel told me he found a connection between his investigation and the Whitmore family.””

Arthur, standing nearby, went completely still.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

The old man looked at the photograph.

His face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

Naomi noticed.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

Arthur did not answer.

“Who is she?””

His hands trembled slightly.

A reaction almost impossible to imagine from someone who controlled billion-dollar companies.

“She was supposed to be dead.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at him.

“Who?””

Arthur slowly looked up.

“My daughter.””

Alexander froze.

“You never had a daughter.””

Arthur’s expression broke.

“Because I was told she died.””

Nobody spoke.

The impossible weight of the revelation settled over the room.

Naomi stared at the photograph.

A woman connected to Arthur.

A woman connected to Daniel.

A woman everyone believed was gone.

Marcus looked at Naomi.

“This is why they wanted the files.””

“What was in them?””

Arthur answered quietly.

“Proof that my daughter’s death was not an accident.””

The words hit everyone.

Especially Alexander.

Because his entire family history had just changed.

Vanessa stepped backward.

“This is insane.””

Nobody reacted.

Arthur continued staring at the photograph.

“My daughter disappeared twenty years ago.””

Naomi looked at him.

“And you believed she was dead?””

“Yes.””

“Who told you?””

Arthur’s face turned pale.

A long silence followed.

Then he whispered:

“My closest friend.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“Name.””

Arthur looked toward the crowd.

Toward the employees.

Toward the people who had been inside his home for years.

Then his eyes stopped.

Not on a stranger.

Not on an outsider.

On someone standing near the hallway.

Someone who had been quietly listening.

Someone Naomi had trusted.

Arthur’s voice was barely audible.

“Evelyn.””

Everyone turned.

The woman who had revealed the truth earlier suddenly looked terrified.

“No.””

Arthur stepped forward.

“You knew.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No, Arthur. Please.””

But Naomi saw it.

The same reaction.

The same fear.

The same hesitation.

And this time, Naomi understood.

Evelyn had not just hidden the truth about Daniel Cross.

She had hidden the truth about the Whitmore family.

Marcus whispered:

“Naomi…”

She didn’t look away from Evelyn.

Because the person who had been helping her enemy was not somewhere outside the mansion.

The enemy had been invited inside.

Naomi took one step forward.

“Tell me the truth, Evelyn.””

The assistant’s eyes filled with tears.

“What truth?””

Naomi’s voice became colder.

“The truth about why you hired me.””

Evelyn stopped breathing.

Because nobody had ever asked that question before.

And Naomi finally realized something that changed everything.

She had not accidentally found Whitmore House.

She had been brought there.

Evelyn whispered:

“I didn’t hire you.””

Naomi froze.

“What?””

Evelyn looked at her with guilt and fear.

“I only approved your application.””

A pause.

“Someone else put your name on the list.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

Evelyn looked toward the ballroom doors.

And Naomi followed her eyes.

Because standing outside the glass entrance was a figure watching them.

A person who should not have been there.

A person Naomi recognized immediately.

Her former client.

May you like

Daniel Cross.

But Daniel Cross had died three years ago.
