Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For three years, Naomi Reyes had lived with one memory.

Daniel Cross dying.

She remembered the hospital hallway.

The doctors refusing to meet her eyes.

The silence after they told her there was nothing more they could do.

She remembered standing outside his room, unable to move, unable to accept that the man she had promised to protect was gone.

She remembered the guilt.

The endless question that followed her everywhere.

Why did I survive?

Now Daniel Cross was standing outside Whitmore House.

Alive.

Watching her.

Naomi did not breathe.

Nobody in the ballroom moved.

The man beyond the glass doors looked older.

Tired.

His hair was shorter.

A faint scar crossed the side of his face.

But there was no mistaking him.

Naomi knew his face better than her own.

She had spent six months studying every possible threat around him.

She knew the way he walked.

The way he held his shoulders.

The way he looked at people when he was hiding something.

And right now…

Daniel Cross was hiding something.

“Impossible,” Marcus whispered.

Naomi barely heard him.

“Daniel?””

The figure outside did not respond.

Instead, he looked toward the security cameras.

Then toward the ceiling.

As if he knew exactly how dangerous it was to stand there.

Arthur Whitmore stared in disbelief.

“You’re alive.””

Daniel’s expression tightened.

“Yes.””

The single word sent another wave of shock through the ballroom.

Vanessa looked between everyone.

“This is a joke.””

Nobody answered.

She stepped forward.

“Alexander, tell me this is a joke.””

Alexander looked at his father.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Naomi.

For the first time in his life, he looked completely lost.

“I don’t know what this is.””

Daniel finally entered the ballroom.

Security guards immediately moved toward him.

Naomi reacted before anyone else.

“Stop.””

Everyone turned.

The guards froze.

Naomi stared at Daniel.

“Let him through.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You trust him?””

Her eyes never left Daniel.

“No.””

The answer surprised everyone.

Including Daniel.

“But I need answers.””

Daniel walked slowly into the room.

Three hundred guests watched the man who was supposed to be dead stand in front of them.

The cameras flashed.

Phones appeared.

Whispers spread.

But Naomi saw only one thing.

Daniel looked afraid.

Not guilty.

Afraid.

“Naomi,” he said quietly.

Hearing her name from him almost broke something inside her.

Because for three years, she had forced herself to believe she had failed him.

Now he was standing in front of her.

Alive.

And carrying secrets.

“You let me believe you were dead,” she said.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than an excuse would have.

“Why?””

He looked around the room.

At Arthur.

At Evelyn.

At Marcus.

Then back at Naomi.

“Because someone wanted you to disappear.””

Naomi’s expression hardened.

“I know.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You don’t.””

The ballroom became silent.

“The person who attacked me wasn’t trying to kill me.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Daniel looked at him.

“They were trying to force Naomi to make a mistake.””

Naomi felt a chill.

“What mistake?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Trusting the wrong person.””

Everyone became still.

Because suddenly, all eyes moved toward Evelyn.

The assistant looked devastated.

“I never wanted this.””

Daniel’s expression became cold.

“You helped them.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I was trying to protect Arthur.””

“You were protecting yourself.””

The words cut deeply.

Arthur looked at Evelyn.

“Is that true?””

She looked away.

And that was enough.

Arthur stepped backward.

The woman who had managed his entire life for fifteen years had just become someone he no longer recognized.

Naomi looked at Daniel.

“Start from the beginning.””

Daniel nodded.

“Three years ago, I discovered something.””

He reached into his coat and removed a small drive.

Several people gasped.

Naomi stared.

The size.

The color.

The design.

She recognized it immediately.

The original drive.

The one everyone thought was gone.

“You had it.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I never lost it.””

Her voice became quiet.

“Then why did you let everyone believe it disappeared?””

“Because someone inside my company was searching for it.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Naomi noticed.

“Daniel.””

He looked at her.

“You deserve the truth.””

A pause.

“The person who betrayed me was working with someone from the Whitmore family.””

Arthur looked stunned.

“My family?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa immediately looked at Alexander.

But Daniel continued.

“Not Alexander.””

Everyone relaxed slightly.

Except Alexander.

Because that meant the threat was someone else.

“Then who?”” Arthur demanded.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

The assistant’s face went pale.

“No.””

Daniel sighed.

“I’m sorry.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then explain.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect your daughter.””

Arthur froze.

“My daughter?””

Naomi looked between them.

The same daughter from the photograph.

The daughter everyone believed was dead.

Daniel nodded.

“She’s alive.””

The room erupted.

Arthur grabbed the edge of the table.

“Where?””

Daniel looked at Naomi.

And that was when she realized something.

He had not come here only because of the files.

He had come because of her.

“Daniel.””

His expression softened.

“The reason I needed to find you was because she trusted only one person.””

Naomi frowned.

“Who?””

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He removed an old photograph.

And handed it to her.

Naomi looked down.

Her hands immediately went cold.

Because the woman in the photograph was not a stranger.

She knew her.

Not from years ago.

From recently.

From Whitmore House.

The woman smiled beside a young girl.

A woman who had spent the last eleven months cleaning rooms, preparing meals, and walking through the mansion quietly.

Naomi stared at the picture.

“No.””

Daniel watched her reaction.

“She’s been here the entire time.””

Naomi looked up.

“Who?””

Daniel said the name.

And the entire world seemed to stop.

“Maria Reyes.””

The photograph slipped slightly in Naomi’s hand.

Because Maria Reyes was not just anyone.

She was Naomi’s mother.

The woman Naomi believed had abandoned her when she was a teenager.

The woman she had spent years believing chose to disappear.

The woman Daniel claimed was alive.

And inside Whitmore House.

Marcus looked confused.

“Your mother?””

Naomi could barely speak.

“My mother died.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked toward the hallway.

“She made everyone believe that.””

Naomi’s heart pounded.

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“Because she was protecting you.””

A sound came from the hallway.

A soft movement.

Everyone turned.

An older woman stepped into view.

Her hands trembled.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Naomi stopped breathing.

She knew that face.

Even after all these years.

Even after convincing herself she had forgotten.

“Mom?””

The woman covered her mouth.

“Naomi…”

The name broke her.

Twenty years of anger.

Twenty years of questions.

Twenty years of believing she had been abandoned.

All collapsed in one second.

Naomi took a step forward.

Then stopped.

Because something was wrong.

Her mother was crying.

But she was not looking at Naomi.

She was looking at Daniel.

With fear.

And Naomi immediately understood.

Her mother was not afraid of seeing her daughter again.

She was afraid of what Naomi was about to learn.

“What aren’t you telling me?”” Naomi asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Maria whispered:

“The night Daniel disappeared…”

She looked at Naomi.

“I was there.””

Naomi froze.

“What?””

Maria’s voice shook.

“And I know who tried to kill him.””

A pause.

Her eyes moved toward Arthur Whitmore.

“The same person who destroyed our family.””

The room went silent.

Because Maria Reyes pointed at the person nobody expected.

May you like

And said:

“It was someone you have trusted for years.””
