Chapter 8: The House of Buried Secrets

The abandoned Whitmore property had been empty for twenty years.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

The old estate sat beyond the northern edge of the family land, hidden behind overgrown trees and a rusted iron gate. The mansion had once belonged to Arthur Whitmore’s parents, but after Clara’s disappearance, nobody wanted anything to do with it.

Too many memories.

Too many unanswered questions.

Too many things left behind.

Now Naomi stood outside the same house where her father’s phone signal had disappeared.

Rain fell lightly over the property.

The wind moved through the trees.

And for the first time in years, Naomi felt something she thought she had lost.

Fear.

Not fear for herself.

Fear of arriving too late.

“We should wait for backup,” Marcus said.

Naomi looked at the dark windows of the mansion.

“No.””

Marcus frowned.

“Naomi.””

“If someone has my father, every minute matters.””

Daniel stepped beside her.

“She’s right.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You almost died because you rushed into danger.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“And she spent three years blaming herself because nobody told her the truth.””

Silence.

Marcus looked away.

Because he knew Daniel was right.

Naomi adjusted her coat.

“I’m going in.””

Daniel immediately followed.

“So am I.””

She looked at him.

“You’re not my assignment anymore.””

Daniel gave a tired smile.

“Neither are you.””

That answer surprised her.

For years, she had defined herself by protecting others.

But standing there, she realized something.

Daniel was not asking her to save him.

He was standing beside her.

For once, she was not carrying everything alone.

Behind them, Arthur stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

The old man looked at the mansion.

“I’m coming too.””

Alexander stared.

“Dad, absolutely not.””

Arthur looked at his son.

“My daughter disappeared because I trusted the wrong person.””

His voice shook.

“I spent twenty years believing a lie.””

He looked at Naomi.

“I will not stand outside while another member of my family is taken from me.””

Nobody argued after that.

Even Marcus knew some battles were not about strategy.

They were about closure.

The group entered the property together.

The front door was already open.

That was the first warning.

Naomi raised a hand.

Everyone stopped.

The old Naomi returned instantly.

The woman who studied shadows.

The woman who listened before moving.

She scanned the entrance.

Broken furniture.

Dust-covered floors.

Old photographs hanging crooked on the walls.

Nothing moved.

But something felt wrong.

“This place was searched recently,” Naomi whispered.

Marcus looked around.

“How can you tell?””

“The dust.””

He frowned.

She pointed toward the floor.

“There are fresh footprints.””

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

“Someone knew we would come.””

Naomi nodded.

Which meant this was not a rescue mission.

It was a trap.

They moved deeper into the house.

Every room held pieces of a forgotten life.

An old piano.

Family portraits.

Bookshelves covered in dust.

Then Naomi stopped.

On the wall was a photograph.

A young Clara Whitmore.

Standing beside Arthur.

Smiling.

Happy.

A life that had been stolen.

Arthur touched the frame.

“My daughter.””

His voice broke.

“I thought I would never see her face again.””

Naomi looked at him.

“She survived.””

Arthur nodded.

“But I lost twenty years.””

The sadness in his voice affected her.

Because Naomi understood.

Loss was not only about death.

Sometimes it was about believing someone was gone when they were still somewhere in the world.

A noise came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Naomi moved first.

She reached the staircase silently.

Daniel followed.

At the top floor, they found a hallway filled with old rooms.

One door was slightly open.

Inside was a small office.

And someone was sitting at the desk.

Naomi stopped.

The man slowly turned around.

He looked older than the photograph.

His hair was gray.

His face carried years of exhaustion.

But his eyes were the same.

The same eyes from the memory she barely remembered.

“Naomi.””

She could not move.

The world became quiet.

Because after twenty years…

Her father was finally standing in front of her.

Gabriel Reyes stood slowly.

“I know you have every reason to hate me.””

Naomi stared.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“Yes.””

“You let me grow up without you.””

“Yes.””

“You let me think my mother abandoned me.””

His expression broke.

“I know.””

Naomi wanted to scream.

She wanted to ask a thousand questions.

But when she finally spoke, only one word came out.

“Why?””

Gabriel looked down.

“Because the people hunting me would have killed you.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the only one I had.””

He stepped closer.

“When I discovered what Richard Hale was doing, I became a target.””

Naomi listened.

“I tried to expose him. I tried to protect Clara. I tried to protect your mother.””

His voice became heavier.

“But Richard had already planned everything.””

Arthur entered the room.

The moment Gabriel saw him, his expression changed.

“Arthur.””

The billionaire stared at him.

“Twenty years.””

Gabriel nodded.

“I know.””

“Twenty years I buried my daughter.””

Gabriel looked away.

“I know.””

Arthur’s anger appeared.

“Do you have any idea what that did to me?””

Gabriel accepted the words.

“No.””

A pause.

“But I know what it did to Clara.””

The room went silent.

Arthur froze.

“You know where she is.””

Gabriel looked at him.

“Yes.””

Naomi turned.

“She’s alive?””

Gabriel nodded.

“She was.””

The answer confused everyone.

“Was?””

Gabriel looked toward the window.

His expression changed.

“She died two days ago.””

The room went still.

Arthur nearly collapsed.

“No.””

Gabriel lowered his head.

“She spent twenty years hiding. She spent twenty years collecting evidence against Richard.””

Naomi whispered:

“And then?””

“Then Richard found her.””

The anger inside Arthur was immediate.

“He killed my daughter.””

Gabriel shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“He didn’t kill her.””

A pause.

“He tried.””

Gabriel reached into the desk drawer.

He removed a small box.

Inside was a stack of documents.

Photographs.

Recordings.

Evidence.

“The final files.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“This is everything?””

Gabriel nodded.

“Everything Richard tried to bury.””

Marcus opened one document.

His eyes widened.

“This is enough to destroy him.””

Gabriel looked at Naomi.

“But there’s one problem.””

“What?””

“He knows you have the key.””

Naomi looked at the necklace.

“He can’t open the files without me.””

“No.””

Gabriel’s expression darkened.

“He doesn’t need the files anymore.””

The room became cold.

“Why?””

“Because he found another way.””

Suddenly, every phone in the room vibrated.

Everyone checked their screens.

A message appeared.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

*YOU FOUND THE PAST. NOW WATCH WHAT HAPPENS TO THE PRESENT.*

Then another message arrived.

A video.

Naomi opened it.

The screen showed Whitmore House.

The ballroom.

The place they had left less than an hour earlier.

But something was wrong.

The cameras showed people inside.

Security guards.

Employees.

Family members.

And standing in the center of the room was Vanessa Sterling.

Her face was terrified.

A man stood behind her.

Holding a document.

Naomi’s eyes narrowed.

Because she recognized him.

Not from her past.

From tonight.

The man who had entered the ballroom.

The man who had brought the folder.

The man who claimed he was looking for her.

Marcus whispered:

“Impossible.””

Naomi looked at him.

“Who is he?””

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then answered:

“The man who trained me.””

A pause.

“The man who taught me how to find people who don’t want to be found.””

Naomi watched the video.

The man turned toward the camera.

As if he knew she was watching.

Then he smiled.

And said:

“Naomi Reyes.””

The recording ended.

But not before one final message appeared.

*COME HOME. YOUR HOUSE ISN’T YOUR HOUSE ANYMORE.*

Naomi looked back at Whitmore House.

The place where she had hidden for eleven months.

The place where she thought she had finally found peace.

Now she understood.

May you like

She had never been hiding from the enemy.

She had been living inside his plan.
