Chapter 6: The Night Everything Changed
“Did you kill my father?””
Malik’s question was so quiet that somehow it was louder than a scream.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The guests who had remained in the ballroom suddenly looked away, as if they had accidentally stepped into a private tragedy they were never meant to witness.
Harold stood in the center of the room.
The woman who had arrived carrying a small gift bag.
The woman who had been thrown out like a stranger.
The woman who had paid for the entire wedding.
Now she stood accused of something that could destroy everything.
“Malik…”
Her voice cracked.
But he stepped back.
“No.””
His eyes were full of pain.
“Don’t say my name like that.””
“Like what?””
“Like you’re still my mother.””
The words hit her harder than anything else that night.
I saw it.
The way her shoulders dropped.
The way she looked older in that one moment.
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Malik, you need to understand—”
“No.””
Malik turned toward him.
“You don’t get to explain this.””
His voice became sharper.
“You disappeared.””
Then he looked at Harold.
“You lied.””
His eyes moved around the room.
“And apparently my entire life has been one huge secret.””
The phone still sat on the table.
Daniel’s video remained paused.
A warning.
A threat.
A reminder that the truth was bigger than any of them wanted to admit.
I stepped closer.
“Malik, maybe we should leave.””
He looked at me.
For a second, I thought he would say yes.
I thought he would let me take him away from the crowd.
Away from the humiliation.
Away from the questions.
But then he looked at Harold again.
“No.””
His voice was broken.
“I need answers.””
Harold nodded slowly.
“You deserve them.””
The room became silent.
She walked toward a nearby table and sat down.
Not like someone preparing to defend herself.
Like someone preparing to finally confess.
“I didn’t kill your father.””
Malik stared at her.
“Then why did Daniel say that?””
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not good enough.””
Harold looked down at her hands.
“I know.””
The honesty surprised him.
She took a breath.
“Your father died because of a choice I made.””
Thomas looked at her.
“Claire.””
She looked at him.
“It’s time.””
Something passed between them.
Something painful.
Something that told me they had been carrying this burden for years.
Harold turned back to Malik.
“Your biological father, Andrew, wasn’t killed.””
Malik frowned.
“Then what happened?””
“He was trying to expose someone.””
“Who?””
Her eyes moved toward the frozen video.
“Richard.””
The name came up again.
The man connected to Daniel.
The man who seemed to be behind everything.
“Richard was your father’s business partner,” Harold explained.
“They built a company together. They trusted each other.””
She paused.
“Until Richard started stealing from the company.””
Thomas nodded.
“He created fake accounts. Moved money. Hid evidence.””
Malik looked at him.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
Thomas’s expression became bitter.
“But Andrew found proof.””
Harold’s fingers tightened.
“He was going to report Richard.””
“And Richard killed him?””
“No.””
Her answer came immediately.
Too immediately.
Malik noticed.
“Then what?””
Harold looked at the floor.
“The night Andrew was supposed to meet the authorities, I received a phone call.””
The ballroom felt colder.
“Someone told me Andrew was in danger.””
Malik leaned forward.
“Who?””
“I never found out.””
“What did you do?””
“I called Andrew.””
Her voice became quieter.
“He didn’t answer.””
A tear slid down her cheek.
“So I went looking for him.””
She looked at Malik.
“I found him near the old factory.””
Nobody spoke.
“What happened there?”” Malik asked.
Harold swallowed.
“He was hurt.””
The word hung there.
“Alive?””
She nodded.
“For a few minutes.””
Malik looked away.
“And you were there?””
“Yes.””
“Then why does Daniel think you caused it?””
Harold closed her eyes.
“Because I was the last person who saw him alive.””
A silence followed.
I felt the entire room shift.
Because that was different.
Not murder.
But still a secret.
Still something she had hidden.
Malik looked devastated.
“You let me believe my father just disappeared.””
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“You always say that.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“But this time, I was wrong.””
That confession seemed to hurt her more than anything else.
Thomas stepped closer.
“Malik, your mother spent years trying to keep Richard away from you.””
Malik turned.
“Then why did Daniel get close?””
Thomas looked toward the exit.
“Because Richard was patient.””
A sudden movement caught everyone’s attention.
A security guard entered the ballroom.
“Mr. Thomas?””
Thomas looked up.
“Yes?””
The guard looked nervous.
“We checked the security footage.””
Everyone became alert.
“What did you find?””
The guard held a tablet.
“Someone accessed the venue’s private office before the wedding started.””
The manager stepped forward.
“The payment records?””
The guard nodded.
“Yes.””
Malik looked confused.
“Why would someone access the payment records?””
The guard hesitated.
“Because they were looking for information.””
“What information?””
The guard looked at Harold.
“About the trust.””
Harold’s face changed.
“Show me.””
The guard handed the tablet to Thomas.
A security video appeared.
The timestamp showed several hours before the ceremony.
A person entered the venue office.
Wearing a staff uniform.
Their face was hidden.
They opened files.
Checked documents.
Then removed something.
The guard paused the video.
“This is where they took the file.””
Thomas looked closer.
Then his expression darkened.
“What?””
I asked.
He pointed at the screen.
“That folder.””
Nobody understood.
“What’s inside it?”” Malik asked.
Thomas answered quietly.
“Malik’s birth records.””
The room went silent.
Because suddenly, the theft was no longer about money.
Someone wasn’t trying to steal a million dollars.
They were trying to steal the truth.
The guard continued.
“There’s more.””
He zoomed in.
The person turned slightly.
Enough for a face to become visible.
Malik stepped closer.
Then stopped.
His face went completely blank.
“No.””
I looked at the screen.
And my heart dropped.
Because the person who entered the office wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t Richard.
It wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone Malik trusted.
Someone who had been standing beside him during every important moment of his life.
Someone who had helped plan this wedding.
Someone who had comforted him when he complained about his mother.
The person on the screen was…
me.
My breath stopped.
“What?””
Malik looked at me.
His expression changed from confusion to disbelief.
“No.””
I shook my head immediately.
“That’s not possible.””
But the video didn’t lie.
The woman in the recording had my dress.
My hair.
My bracelet.
The bracelet Malik gave me last Christmas.
A bracelet I had never taken off.
The guests began whispering.
Malik stared at me.
“Why were you in the office?””
“I wasn’t.””
“Then explain that.””
“I can’t.””
His eyes hardened.
For the first time that night, I saw him look at me the way he had looked at Harold.
Like I was a stranger.
“Did you know about the trust?””
“No.””
“Did you know about my father?””
“No.””
“Then why does the footage show you stealing my records?””
I had no answer.
Because I knew one thing.
The person in that video looked exactly like me.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*They’re blaming you because that’s exactly what I wanted.*
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
*Ask Malik who introduced you to him three years ago.*
My blood ran cold.
Because suddenly, I remembered.
The first day I met Malik.
The person who brought us together.
The person who said we would be perfect for each other.
The person who knew everything about both of us.
And when I looked up at Thomas…
he was already staring at me.
Because he knew too.
The person who introduced me to Malik wasn’t a coincidence.
May you like
It was part of a plan.
And the person behind it had been controlling our lives long before tonight’s wedding began.
