Chapter 5: The Truth Buried Beneath His Name

The words on the document seemed impossible to understand.

*Malik is not my heir.*

Four words.

Four words that destroyed the foundation of everything he believed about himself.

The ballroom remained frozen.

The guests who had come to watch a wedding were now watching a family collapse.

Nobody cared about the flowers anymore.

Nobody cared about the expensive decorations.

Nobody cared about the champagne waiting on polished tables.

All eyes were on Malik.

And for the first time since I met him, he looked completely powerless.

“Give me that.””

His voice was quiet.

Almost too quiet.

Thomas didn’t move.

“Malik—”

“Give me the paper.””

Something in his voice changed.

The confidence was gone.

The arrogance was gone.

Only panic remained.

Thomas looked at Harold.

She looked away.

That small movement hurt more than any confession could have.

Because Malik saw it too.

“Mom?””

Harold closed her eyes.

“Malik…”

“No.””

He stepped backward.

“No, don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Look at me like that.””

His voice cracked.

“Like you already know something I don’t.””

Nobody spoke.

I watched Harold struggle to find words.

She had spent years protecting him from the truth.

But now the truth had walked into the room by itself.

Thomas finally handed him the document.

Malik grabbed it.

His eyes scanned the page quickly.

Then slower.

The paper shook in his hands.

“What is this?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

“What is this?””

Malik’s voice rose.

“Someone explain this.””

Harold looked like she was carrying a weight she could no longer hold.

“Malik…”

“No.””

He pointed at the document.

“This says I’m not your heir.””

His eyes moved between his parents.

“Whose son am I?””

The question echoed through the ballroom.

Nobody expected him to ask it.

Not even Harold.

She looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“You are my son.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

The pain in his voice was impossible to ignore.

“Who am I?””

Harold opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Malik.””

“Don’t.””

The younger man shook his head.

“Don’t say my name like you know me.””

Thomas stopped.

For a moment, he looked less like a wealthy businessman returning with secrets.

He looked like a father who had lost years he could never recover.

“I made mistakes.””

Malik laughed bitterly.

“You think?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

His voice grew louder.

“Everyone says they protected me. Everyone says they sacrificed for me. But somehow, I’m the only person who never gets to know the truth.””

The guests watched silently.

And for the first time, I didn’t see the arrogant man who had humiliated Harold.

I saw a frightened child trapped inside an adult body.

A child who had spent his entire life believing a story that might have been false.

Thomas lowered his voice.

“You deserve the truth.””

“Then tell me.””

A long silence followed.

Finally, Thomas spoke.

“Your biological father was my younger brother.””

The room went completely still.

Malik stared.

“What?””

Harold looked down.

Thomas continued.

“My brother, Andrew, died before you were born.””

Malik’s face lost color.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Your mother and Andrew loved each other.””

I felt Harold’s pain before she even spoke.

“Please.””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Not here.””

But Thomas continued.

“After Andrew died, Claire was alone. She had no money, no protection, and she was pregnant with you.””

Malik looked at Harold.

She couldn’t meet his eyes.

“So you’re saying…”

He swallowed.

“I’m not your son.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

His voice softened.

“You are my son in every way that matters.””

Malik looked confused.

“Then why?””

“Because legally, you were never my heir.””

Thomas pointed toward the document.

“When I married your mother, I adopted you. I raised you. I loved you.””

He paused.

“But my family’s inheritance rules were complicated. The trust was created based on bloodline.””

Malik looked at the paper again.

“So all my life…”

His voice became smaller.

“All my life, I thought I was building my father’s legacy.””

Thomas looked away.

“You were building your own.””

The sentence should have comforted him.

It didn’t.

Because Malik’s entire identity had been tied to something that was never his.

I watched him lower the document.

Then suddenly, anger replaced confusion.

“So this is why you hid everything?””

He looked at Harold.

“You knew.””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

“When I was successful?””

Still no answer.

“When I was rich enough?””

“Malik…”

“No.””

His eyes filled with anger.

“You let me spend my entire life chasing something that wasn’t even mine.””

Harold stepped closer.

“I wanted you to become a good man before you became a wealthy one.””

He laughed.

A painful sound.

“And did I?””

Nobody answered.

The silence said enough.

Malik looked away.

I could see the realization hitting him.

Not about the inheritance.

About himself.

Then Daniel’s name appeared again.

The phone on the table buzzed.

Everyone turned.

Malik looked at the screen.

Another message.

This time it was from Daniel.

*You wanted the truth? Here it is.*

A video file appeared beneath the message.

Malik hesitated.

Thomas’s expression changed.

“Don’t open it.””

Everyone looked at him.

“Why?””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Because Daniel knows exactly what he’s doing.””

Malik stared.

“You know him?””

Thomas nodded.

“I know his father.””

The room went quiet.

“Who is his father?””

Thomas looked at Harold.

And the fear returned to her face.

“Richard.””

The name meant something to her.

I saw it immediately.

“Who is Richard?”” I asked.

Harold whispered:

“The man who destroyed Thomas’s company.””

Thomas nodded.

“Years ago, Richard tried to take everything from me.””

Malik looked at the phone.

“And Daniel?””

Thomas’s expression hardened.

“Daniel didn’t become your friend by accident.””

The truth became colder with every word.

“He was placed in your life.””

Malik stepped back.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked directly at him.

“Because Daniel needed you to trust him.””

A horrible feeling settled in my stomach.

“Trust him for what?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

He looked at the wedding hall.

At the guests.

At the documents.

At the money.

Then he said:

“To get close enough to destroy the trust from the inside.””

Malik looked down at the phone.

The video waited.

His thumb hovered over the screen.

“No,” Harold said suddenly.

Everyone turned.

Her voice shook.

“Don’t watch it.””

Malik looked at her.

“Why?””

Because she was afraid.

Not of the video.

Of what it would reveal.

“What is on it?”” Malik asked.

Harold looked away.

And that was when I realized something.

She wasn’t afraid because Daniel had betrayed Malik.

She was afraid because Daniel might reveal something about her.

Something she had hidden for years.

Malik pressed play.

The ballroom lights reflected on his face as the video loaded.

A man appeared on the screen.

Daniel.

He was sitting in a dark room.

And beside him was someone else.

Someone none of us expected.

Someone who made Thomas take a step backward.

Because the person sitting beside Daniel was the one person Thomas believed had died with his old life.

His former business partner.

The man who knew every secret.

The man who knew Malik’s entire history.

Daniel looked into the camera and smiled.

Then he said:

“Malik, if you’re watching this, it means Claire finally failed to keep the truth buried.””

Harold covered her mouth.

Daniel continued.

“And there’s one more thing you need to know.””

He leaned closer to the camera.

“Your mother didn’t just hide your identity.””

A pause.

“She hid the reason your real father died.””

The video stopped.

And in the silence that followed, Malik slowly turned toward Harold.

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Mom…”

A tear rolled down her face.

Because she knew the next question was coming.

May you like

And she knew there was no way to hide from it anymore.

“Did you kill my father?””
