Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
Malik stared at his phone as if the screen had betrayed him.
The name glowing beneath the incoming call made no sense.
Nobody spoke.
Not me.
Not Harold.
Not even Malik.
The only sound was the faint ringing of the phone echoing through the garden.
Finally, Harold whispered one word.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
I looked at her.
She had gone completely pale.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
Her eyes remained fixed on the phone.
“Harold?””
Her lips trembled.
“That’s impossible.””
Malik looked between us.
“You know this person?””
Harold took one step backward.
Like she was trying to escape a memory.
“Malik…”
The phone kept ringing.
Then it stopped.
The silence afterward felt worse.
Malik immediately checked the screen.
“He left a voicemail.””
Nobody moved.
“Play it,” Harold whispered.
Malik looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because I need to know.””
He hesitated.
Then pressed the button.
A few seconds of static filled the air.
Then a man’s voice came through.
Older.
Rough.
Familiar.
“Malik…”
Harold covered her mouth.
The voice continued.
“If you’re hearing this, then something has gone wrong.””
Malik froze.
The recording paused briefly.
“I know you were never supposed to receive this message until after your thirtieth birthday, but circumstances have changed.””
My heart started beating faster.
The man continued.
“Your mother will tell you that I’m gone. She will tell you she did everything to protect you. And maybe she believes that.””
Harold closed her eyes.
Tears appeared.
“But there are things she never told you.””
Malik looked at his mother.
The recording continued.
“The trust was never only about money.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“It was about the truth.””
Then the voicemail ended.
Nobody spoke.
The garden suddenly felt too quiet.
Malik lowered the phone slowly.
“Who was that?””
Harold didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
She looked at him.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Guilt.
“I thought he was gone.””
Malik’s face tightened.
“Who?””
Her voice shook.
“Your father.””
The words landed heavily.
Even though we all knew the answer.
Even though the impossible had just happened.
Hearing it aloud made everything different.
Malik laughed nervously.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Harold looked down.
“Malik…”
“My father died.””
“Yes.””
She swallowed.
“He did.””
“Then who was that?””
She had no answer.
And that frightened me.
Because Harold always seemed like someone who knew exactly what to do.
But now she looked lost.
A sudden noise came from inside the venue.
A crash.
Then shouting.
We all turned.
The wedding guests were gathering near the ballroom entrance.
The manager ran toward us.
“Mrs. Harold!””
She looked up.
“What happened?””
The manager looked terrified.
“There’s someone inside asking for you.””
Malik immediately stepped forward.
“Who?””
The manager hesitated.
Then said:
“He says he’s your husband.””
Harold stopped breathing.
I watched every emotion cross her face.
Shock.
Fear.
Pain.
Hope.
All at once.
Malik’s expression hardened.
“My father is dead.””
The manager looked confused.
“I don’t know what to tell you, sir.””
“Where is he?””
The manager pointed toward the ballroom.
“He’s waiting near the main entrance.””
Nobody moved for a moment.
Then Harold walked.
Slowly.
Like every step was carrying years of memories.
I followed her.
Malik followed us.
When we entered the ballroom, hundreds of guests were still standing around, whispering.
The wedding decorations looked almost ridiculous now.
The perfect flowers.
The expensive lights.
The carefully planned celebration.
All of it had become a stage for secrets.
And standing beside the entrance was a man none of us expected to see.
He was older than the photographs I had seen.
His hair was gray.
His face carried years of hardship.
But his eyes…
His eyes were the same eyes Malik had.
The man looked directly at Harold.
“Hello, Claire.””
Harold stopped.
No one called her that.
Not anymore.
Her name before she became Malik’s mother.
Before everything changed.
Her hand covered her mouth.
“Thomas.””
The ballroom erupted.
People whispered.
Some guests stepped backward.
Others pulled out their phones.
Malik looked like he couldn’t process reality.
“You’re dead.””
The man turned toward him.
His expression was painful.
“I know.””
Malik stared.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas took a breath.
“It means your mother wasn’t the only person who kept secrets.””
Harold shook her head.
“No.””
Thomas looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You can’t just come back.””
“I know.””
“You left us.””
His face dropped.
“Yes.””
The entire room watched.
A family breaking apart in front of everyone.
Malik stepped between them.
“You don’t get to walk in here after all these years and act like nothing happened.””
Thomas looked at him.
“I never thought I could.””
“Then why are you here?””
The older man glanced at the guests.
Then at the wedding decorations.
Then at Harold.
“Because someone is trying to destroy everything I spent my life protecting.””
Malik laughed bitterly.
“You mean the money?””
Thomas looked at him.
“No.””
That answer surprised everyone.
“The money is only the bait.””
The room became silent.
Malik frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Thomas reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I came because someone tried to access the trust.””
Harold looked at him.
“You knew?””
Thomas nodded.
“I received an alert.””
“From who?””
Thomas looked directly at Malik.
“From the person who tried to steal it.””
A chill went through me.
Malik stepped back.
“Who?””
Thomas didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he handed the envelope to him.
“Open it.””
Malik hesitated.
Then took it.
Inside was a photograph.
His face changed instantly.
“What is this?””
I moved closer.
The photo showed Malik.
But not the Malik I knew.
It was a picture of him sitting at a restaurant with someone.
Someone familiar.
Someone I recognized.
My stomach dropped.
Because the person sitting across from Malik in the photograph…
was someone who had been standing beside us all night.
Someone who had access to the wedding.
Someone who knew exactly where the money came from.
Malik looked up slowly.
His voice barely came out.
“I don’t understand.””
Thomas stared at him.
“You should.””
“No.””
Malik shook his head.
“This isn’t possible.””
Thomas’s expression hardened.
“Your best friend didn’t come to your wedding to celebrate you.””
Everyone turned.
“Daniel came because he thought tonight was his chance.””
Malik looked toward the crowd.
Daniel.
The man who had comforted him.
The man who had told him to talk to his mother.
The man who had been standing nearby when the payment issue was revealed.
Daniel was gone.
The space where he had been standing was empty.
My heart sank.
“Where did he go?””
Nobody answered.
Then Malik’s phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
One sentence.
No explanation.
No name.
Just five words.
*I know what your father hid.*
Malik stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
This time, with an image attached.
Harold saw it first.
And the moment she did…
she collapsed into the nearest chair.
Because the picture showed the one thing she had spent decades trying to protect.
A document.
Signed by Thomas.
May you like
And beneath his signature were four words that changed everything.
*Malik is not my heir.*
