Chapter 9: The Truth My Mother Buried

Gabriel placed the drive on the table.

“Twenty-four years ago, your mother discovered that I had created a private financial network.””

I said nothing.

“I moved money for powerful people.””

My father interrupted.

“And stole from them.””

Gabriel smiled.

“I took what I believed I was owed.””

My father raised his gun.

“Enough.””

“No,” I said.

“Let him talk.””

My father looked at me.

“Maya.””

“I want the truth.””

Gabriel nodded.

“Your mother wanted to expose me.””

“Then why did she stay?””

“She was pregnant.””

I froze.

“With me?””

“Yes.””

“And you knew?””

“I knew.””

“Did you want me?””

Gabriel's expression softened.

“I wanted my daughter.””

I looked at my father.

“And you?””

He lowered the gun.

“I wanted to protect you.””

Gabriel continued.

“Your mother believed Alexander could give you a normal life.””

My father looked away.

“She was wrong.””

“Why?””

“Because Alexander knew the network existed.””

I stared at my father.

“You were involved.””

“At first.””

He looked at me.

“Then I tried to leave.””

Gabriel laughed.

“You tried to steal my clients.””

“I tried to save your mother.””

“You failed.””

The room became silent.

I turned to Gabriel.

“Did you kill her?””

“No.””

“Did you order it?””

“No.””

“Then who did?””

Gabriel's expression hardened.

“Daniel.””

I looked at Ryan.

He nodded.

“That is what I discovered.””

Gabriel continued.

“Daniel wanted control of the network. Your mother knew too much. He arranged the accident.””

My hands trembled.

“And my father?””

“He knew Daniel was planning something.””

I looked at Alexander.

“Did you?””

My father couldn't meet my eyes.

“Yes.””

My voice broke.

“You knew?””

“I knew there was a threat.””

“And you let her drive?””

“I sent Thomas after her.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“I arrived too late.””

My father looked at me.

“I thought I could stop it.””

“You couldn't.””

“No.””

I wiped my tears.

“And then you lied.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel threatened you.””

Gabriel stepped closer.

“He wasn't the only one.””

My father stared at him.

“Don't.””

Gabriel looked at me.

“There was another threat.””

“From whom?””

“Me.””

I froze.

“What?””

Gabriel looked genuinely ashamed.

“I threatened Alexander.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted you.””

My father shook his head.

“You wanted revenge.””

“I wanted my daughter.””

“You would've destroyed her life.””

“I would've taken her away from you.””

I looked between them.

“So everyone was fighting over me.””

“No,” Gabriel said.

“They were fighting over what you represented.””

“What do I represent?””

He pointed to the drive.

“Control.””

I didn't understand.

He opened the drive on the computer.

A series of legal documents appeared.

Ownership structures.

Trust agreements.

Corporate shares.

My mother's signature.

My father's signature.

Gabriel's signature.

Then one document.

I read it.

*Bennett-Vale Family Trust.*

My name appeared as beneficiary.

I stared at the screen.

“What is this?””

My father spoke quietly.

“Your mother created it.””

“How much?””

He hesitated.

“Enough to make you one of the wealthiest women in the country.””

My breath caught.

Gabriel shook his head.

“That isn't why they wanted you.””

I looked at him.

“Then why?””

“Because whoever controls the trust controls the network.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“The eighteen million was moved to trigger the trust.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“The account created in your name was designed to make it appear you were laundering money.””

I remembered the company.

Bennett Strategic Partners.

My name.

The transactions.

Someone had built a criminal case around me.

Gabriel nodded.

“If the authorities traced the money to you, you would lose the trust.””

“And who would receive it?””

My father answered.

“Daniel.””

I stared at him.

“Daniel wanted my inheritance.””

“Yes.””

“And Ryan?””

Ryan took a breath.

“I discovered the plan.””

“So you approached me.””

“I approached you because I was investigating Daniel.””

“And then?””

“I fell in love with you.””

I looked at him.

I wanted to believe him.

But trust was not something I could simply switch back on.

My father stepped closer.

“Maya, I made mistakes.””

“You lied about my mother.””

“Yes.””

“You lied about my father.””

“Yes.””

“You lied about the investigation.””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“But did you ever love me?””

He answered immediately.

“With everything I had.””

That hurt more than if he'd hesitated.

Because I believed him.

I looked at Gabriel.

“And you?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I loved you before I knew your face.””

I couldn't answer.

Then a notification appeared on the computer.

A file had been opened remotely.

The screen displayed a video.

My mother.

Alive.

The footage was grainy.

She was sitting in a room.

Speaking directly into the camera.

“If you're watching this, Maya, then the truth finally found you.””

I covered my mouth.

Her voice continued.

“Your father will tell you he protected you.””

A pause.

“He did.””

I looked at Alexander.

“But he also lied.””

My mother's expression softened.

“Gabriel will tell you he loved you.””

Another pause.

“He did.””

Gabriel lowered his head.

“But he also lied.””

Then my mother smiled.

“And Ryan…”

Ryan stepped closer to the screen.

My mother's eyes seemed to look directly at him.

“…was the promise I made to Diane.””

Diane began crying.

My mother continued.

“I knew Ryan would grow up surrounded by people who wanted power.””

“I knew he might become like them.””

“So I made Diane promise me something.””

“If Ryan ever met my daughter, he had to choose.””

The video paused.

Then resumed.

“He had to choose Maya over the money.””

I looked at Ryan.

His eyes were wet.

My mother smiled.

“And he did.””

I couldn't breathe.

The video ended.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then the building alarm stopped.

The doors unlocked.

My father's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?””

He listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“Daniel is gone.””

Thomas frowned.

“Where?””

My father looked at me.

“He took the original trust documents.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Where is he going?””

My father stared at the computer.

“He's going to the bank.””

“What bank?””

“The one holding the trust.””

I looked at Ryan.

“Can he access it?””

Ryan's face went pale.

“Yes.””

“How?””

He swallowed.

“Because the trust requires Maya's biometric authorization.””

I stared at him.

Then I understood.

Daniel didn't need to steal the documents.

He needed me.

Again.

My phone buzzed.

A video message appeared.

Daniel.

He was standing inside a bank vault.

And behind him was the bank manager.

Daniel smiled.

“Maya.””

He held up a gun.

“Come alone.””

Then he turned the camera.

Ryan's younger sister, Vanessa, was tied to a chair.

Daniel smiled.

“If you want her alive…”

May you like

He paused.

“…bring your thumbprint.””
