Chapter 10: The Choice
The bank was surrounded before we arrived.
Police cars filled the street.
Security vehicles blocked every entrance.
But Daniel had planned for that.
He had locked himself inside the private vault with Vanessa and two employees.
My biometric access was the only way inside.
My father grabbed my arm.
“You're not going in.””
“Vanessa is in there.””
“She helped humiliate you.””
“She doesn't deserve to die.””
Ryan stepped forward.
“I'll go.””
Daniel's voice came through the phone.
“No.””
We all froze.
His voice was calm.
“I want Maya.””
I looked at Ryan.
“I'm going.””
“No,” he said.
“Ryan.””
“If you go in there, he wins.””
“Maybe.””
I took a breath.
“But if I don't, Vanessa dies.””
Diane stepped forward.
“Maya.””
I looked at her.
She was crying.
“I owe you more than I can ever repay.””
“You can repay me by staying alive.””
She nodded.
I turned toward the bank.
The manager met me at the entrance.
“Ms. Bennett, I strongly advise—”
“I know.””
He led me downstairs.
At the biometric scanner, I placed my hand against the glass.
A green light appeared.
The vault opened.
Daniel stood inside.
Vanessa sat on the floor.
Her wrists were tied.
Two guards lay unconscious nearby.
Daniel smiled.
“You came.””
“Yes.””
“You always were brave.””
“No.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“I just got tired of being afraid.””
Daniel laughed.
“Your mother said the same thing.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What did you do to her?””
“I didn't kill her.””
“I know.””
“But I caused the accident.””
Vanessa began crying.
Daniel looked at her.
“Don't worry. You're not part of this.””
I stepped forward.
“Let her go.””
“First, the trust.””
I held up my hand.
“You want my biometric authorization.””
“Yes.””
“Then let Vanessa walk out.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not yet.””
I looked at him.
“You don't trust me.””
“I don't trust anyone.””
“Good.””
I stepped closer to the scanner.
Daniel raised his gun.
“Slowly.””
I placed my hand against the device.
The screen lit up.
*BENEFICIARY CONFIRMED.*
Daniel smiled.
Then the screen changed.
*SECOND AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.*
His smile disappeared.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“My mother built the trust.””
“Yes.””
“She didn't trust one person.””
I stepped back.
“She required two.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
I looked toward the vault entrance.
Ryan stood there.
Daniel spun around.
“How did you get in?””
Ryan smiled faintly.
“My mother gave me access years ago.””
Diane had lied about one thing.
She hadn't simply protected Ryan.
She had prepared him.
Daniel raised his gun.
Ryan moved.
A shot exploded.
The bullet struck the wall.
Security officers rushed through the doorway.
Daniel tried to run.
Thomas tackled him.
The gun skidded across the floor.
Daniel fought violently.
“You don't understand!”” he screamed.
“You're all going to lose everything!””
Thomas pinned him.
“You already did.””
Police dragged Daniel away.
The vault fell silent.
Vanessa sobbed.
I untied her.
She grabbed me.
“Maya, I'm sorry.””
I held her for a moment.
“You should be.””
She cried harder.
Outside, the police arrested Daniel Mercer.
The evidence against him was overwhelming.
The shell companies.
The forged accounts.
The attempted murder.
The financial records.
And the original confession from my mother.
Months later, the investigation revealed the full truth.
My mother had discovered Daniel's network.
Alexander had known.
He had tried to protect her but failed.
Diane had secretly helped my mother.
Gabriel had disappeared after threatening to expose everyone.
And Ryan had spent years trying to uncover what happened.
But there was one thing none of them could undo.
The lie.
So I stopped living inside it.
I rebuilt Bennett Holdings.
I closed every account connected to the old network.
I created a foundation in my mother's name.
And I refused to let anyone control my life because of money again.
Ryan and I didn't immediately get back together.
Love wasn't enough to erase eleven months of secrets.
We spent time apart.
He went to therapy.
I did too.
We learned how to speak without hiding.
One evening, almost a year after Thanksgiving, Ryan met me beside the Chicago River.
He held out a cup of tea.
“Chamomile,” he said.
I smiled.
“You remembered.””
“I remember everything.””
I looked at him.
“That used to be comforting.””
“And now?””
I took the cup.
“Now I'm deciding.””
He nodded.
“I deserve that.””
I looked across the river.
“Ryan?””
“Yes?””
“If we do this again, there are no secrets.””
“None.””
“No investigations.””
“None.””
“No pretending you're okay when you're not.””
He smiled.
“Deal.””
I laughed softly.
Then he reached for my hand.
This time, I let him.
Across the water, the city lights reflected against the river.
For the first time in years, I didn't feel like someone's daughter.
Someone's inheritance.
Someone's secret.
I was simply Maya.
And that was enough.
But there was one final thing I never told Ryan.
Three months after Daniel's arrest, I found a letter hidden inside my mother's old desk.
It was addressed to me.
Not from my mother.
From Gabriel.
The letter contained a single photograph.
My mother.
Me.
And another baby.
On the back were four words:
*You had a brother.*
I stared at the photograph for a long time.
Then I turned the page.
There was a name.
A date.
And a hospital in Chicago.
The baby had been born two years before me.
Which meant my mother had kept one final secret from everyone.
Even Gabriel.
Even Alexander.
Even me.
May you like
And beneath the name was one sentence that made my blood run cold:
*He never died.*
