Chapter 5: The Woman in the Photograph
The storage facility smelled like dust, concrete, and old rain.
I walked beside Marcus through a narrow hallway while my father's driver waited outside.
Locker 317 was at the very end.
The brass key shook slightly between my fingers.
Marcus noticed.
“You don't have to do this tonight.””
“Yes, I do.””
“Your father said—”
“My father has been wrong before.””
We reached the door.
I inserted the key.
It turned.
The metal door rolled upward with a loud groan.
Inside were boxes.
Dozens of them.
Old photographs.
Financial records.
Clothes.
A small wooden desk.
And one framed picture sitting face down on the floor.
I picked it up.
My mother.
She was smiling.
Beside her stood Diane Whitmore.
Ryan's mother.
Behind them was a little boy.
Ryan.
He was about eight years old.
I stared at the photograph.
“That's Ryan.””
Marcus nodded.
“Looks like it.””
I turned the photograph over.
A handwritten note covered the back.
*For Maya, when she's old enough to understand.*
My hands went cold.
I unfolded it.
My mother's handwriting.
I knew it immediately.
My sweet Maya,
If you're reading this, then something happened that I prayed never would.
I stopped.
My eyes burned.
Marcus quietly stepped outside the locker.
I kept reading.
Your father believes money can protect us. It can't.
There are people who will destroy anyone standing between them and power.
I found something inside Bennett Holdings.
I trusted someone I shouldn't have.
And I made one mistake.
My breathing became shallow.
The next line was underlined.
I trusted Diane.
I looked at the photograph again.
Diane.
Ryan's mother.
The same woman who had humiliated me at Thanksgiving.
The same woman who had told me I didn't belong.
I continued reading.
Diane knows what happened.
She knows about the accounts.
She knows about the money.
And if anything happens to me, do not trust her.
I sat down on the concrete floor.
There was another page.
But Ryan is different.
I froze.
He was only a child when this began.
If you ever meet him, don't punish him for the sins of his family.
My hands started trembling.
My mother had known Ryan.
She had known his family.
And somehow, seven years before I ever met him, she had written about him.
I kept reading.
There is one person I trusted completely.
If Ryan ever comes to you, listen to him.
He may be the only person who can lead you to the truth.
I stared at the page.
Then I heard footsteps.
Marcus appeared at the entrance.
“We have company.””
“Who?””
He looked down the hallway.
“Diane Whitmore.””
My blood ran cold.
She walked toward us alone.
No security.
No panic.
Just a dark coat and a calm expression.
She stopped several feet away.
“Maya.””
I stood.
“You knew my mother.””
Diane looked at the photograph in my hand.
“Yes.””
“How?””
She took a slow breath.
“We were friends.””
“You lied to me.””
“I was trying to protect Ryan.””
“You insulted me.””
“I needed you to leave.””
“Why?””
Diane's eyes moved to Marcus.
“Can we speak privately?””
“No.””
She looked back at me.
“Then listen carefully.””
She stepped closer.
“Ryan was never supposed to fall in love with you.””
My heart cracked.
“Why?””
“Because your father would never allow it.””
“What does my father have to do with Ryan?””
Diane's expression changed.
“Everything.””
I shook my head.
“You're the one behind the money.””
“No.””
“Then who is?””
She looked at the letter in my hand.
“Your mother discovered the truth before she died.””
“I know.””
“No,” Diane whispered.
“You don't know the worst part.””
She reached into her coat.
Marcus immediately moved in front of me.
Diane slowly pulled out an envelope.
“Don't.””
She stopped.
“This belongs to you.””
“What is it?””
“A second letter.””
I stared at it.
“From my mother?””
“Yes.””
“Why do you have it?””
Diane looked toward the photograph.
“Because she gave it to me the night she died.””
My stomach dropped.
“You were there?””
Diane nodded.
“She called me from the road.””
“What happened?””
“She told me she was being followed.””
“By who?””
Diane's eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel Mercer.””
I couldn't speak.
“Then why didn't you tell anyone?””
“Because Daniel threatened Ryan.””
“What did he threaten?””
Diane looked at me.
“His life.””
The locker suddenly felt too small.
I took the envelope.
“What is in it?””
“Everything.””
I opened it.
The first page contained a list of bank accounts.
The second contained names.
The third contained one sentence.
I read it once.
Then again.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Marcus saw my expression.
“What does it say?””
I couldn't answer.
Diane whispered:
“Read the last line.””
I turned the page.
At the bottom, in my mother's handwriting, were six words:
*Alexander is not Maya's biological father.*
I looked up.
Diane was crying.
And before I could ask who my real father was, the lights inside the storage facility suddenly went out.
A gunshot echoed down the hallway.
Marcus shoved me to the floor.
Diane screamed.
Then, from somewhere in the darkness, a man's voice called my name.
“Maya Bennett…”
I froze.
The voice continued.
“Your mother lied about one thing.””
A second shot rang out.
May you like
And then the voice whispered:
“Ryan isn't the person you're supposed to be afraid of.””
