Chapter 8: The Caseworker Who Erased My Name

I couldn't take my eyes off her.
The woman standing beside Henderson.
The woman holding the file.
The woman whose voice I had heard through the phone just days earlier.
My former caseworker.
Laura Mitchell.
The person who had sounded terrified when she heard my name.
The person who told me to stop looking into the files.
The person who knew exactly what I had found.
My mind struggled to understand.
"No.""
The word came out before I even realized I said it.
Laura looked at me.
And for a second, she looked ashamed.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Ashamed.
That somehow made it worse.
"Emma...""
I stepped back.
"Don't.""
Henderson moved forward.
Richard immediately stepped in front of me.
"You stay away from her.""
Henderson stopped.
A small smile appeared on his face.
The same smile I had seen for two years.
The smile of someone who thought he still had control.
"You really think you can protect her now?""
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"I should have protected her seventeen years ago.""
Henderson laughed quietly.
"Yes.""
The answer shocked everyone.
"That's the one thing we agree on.""
My hands curled into fists.
I looked at Margaret.
"You knew.""
She didn't deny it.
"I knew everything.""
The calmness in her voice made me sick.
"You put me there.""
"Yes.""
Richard turned toward her.
"Mother.""
But Margaret didn't look at him.
She looked at me.
"You need to understand something, Emma. The world is not as simple as you think.""
I almost laughed.
"Simple?""
I pointed toward Henderson.
"He hurt children.""
Margaret's expression remained unchanged.
"He maintained order.""
My stomach turned.
"Order?""
"Children disappear every day.""
She spoke like she was discussing business.
"Families fail them. Systems fail them. Someone has to make decisions.""
Claire stepped forward.
"You don't get to call stealing children a decision.""
Margaret looked at her.
"Still pretending to be a hero, Claire?""
The color drained from Claire's face.
I looked at her.
"What does she mean?""
Nobody answered.
Margaret smiled slightly.
"She never told you?""
Claire looked away.
"What?""
I turned toward her.
"Tell me.""
Claire closed her eyes.
"Emma...""
"No.""
My voice shook.
"I am done finding out pieces of my life from everyone except the people who destroyed it.""
Claire swallowed.
"When I was seventeen...""
She paused.
"I was one of the children.""
I stared.
"What?""
"I was placed in one of the Carter Foundation homes.""
My heart sank.
"Then why are you helping them?""
"I'm not.""
"Then why does she know you?""
Claire looked at Margaret.
"Because I escaped.""
The words silenced the room.
Margaret's expression hardened.
"She ran.""
Claire stepped forward.
"I survived.""
The front door opened.
A staff member quietly entered.
Margaret didn't even turn.
"Take them inside.""
Two security guards appeared.
Richard moved instantly.
"No.""
The guards stopped.
For a second, nobody moved.
Then Margaret sighed.
"Richard.""
Her voice sounded disappointed.
"You always were too emotional.""
Richard stared at her.
"You stole my daughter.""
"I protected your daughter.""
"You erased her.""
"I gave her a chance to live.""
I looked at Margaret.
"Why?""
Finally.
The question I had carried my whole life.
"Why me?""
Margaret looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something different.
Not anger.
Not control.
Fear.
"You were born into something dangerous.""
"What?""
She walked closer.
"Your father inherited the Carter name.""
Richard looked away.
"But your mother discovered what that name meant.""
I waited.
"She found records.""
The same records.
"The foundation had been operating for decades.""
Margaret continued.
"Not just foster homes.""
"Research programs.""
My face tightened.
"Research?""
She nodded.
"Children were tracked.""
"For what?""
She looked at Richard.
"Genetics.""
The room went silent.
I felt sick.
"You're saying you used children for experiments?""
Margaret's face hardened.
"Don't twist my words.""
"Then explain them.""
She looked at me.
"Certain families carry valuable traits.""
I stared.
"You can't be serious.""
"I am.""
Richard looked disgusted.
"Mother, stop.""
But Margaret continued.
"Your mother discovered that you were part of the records.""
I felt my heartbeat increase.
"Me?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
She looked at me.
"Because of your bloodline.""
I almost laughed.
"This is insane.""
"No.""
Margaret shook her head.
"It's the reason people were watching you.""
I looked at Henderson.
"The reason he stayed at the foster home?""
Margaret nodded.
"The reason you were never adopted.""
The words hit me.
Never adopted.
Not because nobody wanted me.
Because nobody was allowed to.
"You controlled my entire life.""
Margaret's face softened slightly.
"Yes.""
The honesty was terrifying.
"Why?""
"Because when you turned eighteen, control of certain assets would transfer.""
I frowned.
"What assets?""
Richard looked at Margaret.
Then suddenly understood.
"No.""
Margaret ignored him.
"You weren't just a child, Emma.""
My stomach dropped.
"You were the legal heir.""
Everything went quiet.
I looked at Richard.
"What is she talking about?""
He didn't answer.
That scared me more.
Margaret smiled.
"Your mother created a trust before she disappeared.""
Richard whispered:
"She couldn't have.""
"She did.""
Margaret looked at me.
"She knew if anything happened to her, you needed protection.""
"Protection?""
I laughed bitterly.
"You mean hiding me.""
"Yes.""
"From who?""
Margaret looked at Richard.
"From everyone.""
I stared.
"This makes no sense.""
Richard finally spoke.
"Emma...""
His voice was broken.
"Your mother discovered that our family's wealth wasn't just inherited.""
He looked at the floor.
"She found illegal accounts.""
"Money.""
"Names.""
"People involved.""
My eyes widened.
"And she put it in a trust?""
Richard nodded.
"She created evidence.""
Claire whispered:
"Evidence that would become accessible when Emma turned eighteen.""
I understood.
The waiting.
The files.
The word "pending.""
Everything.
Margaret didn't keep me because I was worthless.
She kept me because I was valuable.
And that was somehow worse.
Laura finally spoke.
"I didn't know.""
Everyone looked at her.
Margaret smiled.
"Of course you didn't.""
Laura looked at me.
"I swear.""
I stared at her.
"You signed my placement.""
Tears filled her eyes.
"Yes.""
"You sent me there.""
"I was ordered.""
"By who?""
She looked at Margaret.
The answer was obvious.
"I thought I was helping children.""
Her voice cracked.
"I thought the transfers were legitimate.""
"But they weren't.""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"I found out years later.""
"Then why didn't you tell anyone?""
Laura looked destroyed.
"Because I was scared.""
The honesty made me angry.
"So you let us disappear?""
"I tried to fix it.""
"When?""
"Three years ago.""
I frowned.
"What happened?""
Laura looked at Henderson.
"He found out.""
Henderson's face changed.
"Don't.""
Laura ignored him.
"He threatened my family.""
Silence.
"You think I didn't want to expose them?""
She wiped her tears.
"I spent years carrying guilt.""
I looked at her.
"Then why warn me?""
"Because when I saw your name appear again...""
She stopped.
"Again?""
Everyone froze.
I looked at her.
"What do you mean again?""
Laura looked terrified.
"Emma...""
"Again?""
She whispered:
"Your file wasn't activated when you were seventeen.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
She looked at Margaret.
Then at Henderson.
"They reopened your file two weeks ago.""
"Why?""
Nobody answered.
Then Margaret said quietly:
"Because someone knew you were about to turn eighteen.""
I felt cold.
"Who?""
Margaret looked toward the driveway.
Toward Henderson.
"No.""
Henderson looked away.
My stomach dropped.
"Mr. Henderson?""
He didn't speak.
Richard grabbed him by the jacket.
"What did you do?""
Henderson finally looked at me.
And for the first time...
He looked afraid.
"I didn't choose you.""
My breathing stopped.
"What?""
He swallowed.
"They assigned you to me.""
"Who?""
His eyes moved to the folder in Margaret's hand.
Then to me.
"The person who reopened your file.""
A long silence.
Then he said the words that shattered everything.
"The person who ordered me to watch you...""
May you like
He looked directly at me.
"...was your mother.""
