Chapter 7: The Woman Who Signed My Disappearance

The screen stayed black.

But the sentence remained burned into my mind.

*The person who betrayed us was someone Emma has known her entire life.*

I stared at those words until they stopped looking real.

Someone I knew.

Someone who had been around me.

Someone who had watched me grow up.

My first thought was Henderson.

But then I remembered something.

Henderson wasn't around when I was a baby.

He didn't know my mother.

He didn't know my father.

He only knew how to keep me trapped.

So who else?

Richard was standing behind me.

Claire was beside the table.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, I turned around.

"Who?""

Richard looked at me.

His face was pale.

"I don't know.""

I laughed quietly.

"Of course you don't.""

"Emma—"

"No.""

I pointed at the screen.

"My mother made this because she knew something would happen. She knew someone would come after me.""

My voice shook.

"She knew someone close to me betrayed her.""

Richard lowered his eyes.

"And she didn't tell me.""

That sentence caught me.

"Why?""

He looked away.

"Because she didn't trust anyone.""

"Not even you?""

Richard didn't answer.

That hurt more than I expected.

Because despite everything, some part of me wanted him to say yes.

I wanted him to say:

She trusted me.

She loved me.

She fought for us.

But instead, he just stood there carrying another secret.

Claire walked closer.

"Emma.""

I looked at her.

"Do you know who it is?""

She hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

My stomach dropped.

"You do.""

"No.""

"Claire.""

She looked down.

"I have an idea.""

Richard immediately turned.

"Who?""

Claire didn't answer.

"Who?"" he repeated.

Her eyes moved toward the camera.

"Your mother suspected someone inside the family.""

Richard's face hardened.

"Daniel?""

"No.""

The room went quiet.

"Then who?""

Claire took a slow breath.

"Your grandmother.""

I stared.

"My grandmother?""

Richard looked shocked.

"That's impossible.""

Claire looked at him.

"Is it?""

"My mother raised me.""

"Exactly.""

Richard went silent.

I looked between them.

"What does that mean?""

Claire opened one of the boxes on the table.

She pulled out a stack of documents.

"Your grandmother, Margaret Carter, controlled the foundation before Daniel took over.""

Richard looked at the papers.

"I know that.""

"Do you know she personally approved every foster placement?""

His face changed.

"No.""

Claire placed a document in front of him.

"I found this years ago.""

Richard picked it up.

I watched his eyes move across the page.

Then his expression collapsed.

"What is it?""

He handed it to me.

I read.

*Authorization of Special Placement.*

Child:

Emma Carter.

Approved by:

Margaret Carter.

My fingers went numb.

"She signed this?""

Richard nodded slowly.

"My mother...""

He couldn't finish.

I looked at the signature.

A signature that had decided my entire life.

"Why?""

Nobody answered.

Then the camera suddenly made a sound.

The video had restarted.

We all turned.

My mother's face appeared again.

This time, she looked terrified.

"Emma, if you're seeing this part, they already know.""

She looked over her shoulder.

Like she was afraid someone was nearby.

"Listen carefully.""

I stepped closer.

"Your grandmother will tell you she loved you.""

My heart stopped.

"She will tell you she protected you.""

My mother's eyes filled with tears.

"Don't believe her.""

The video shook.

"Margaret Carter didn't save you.""

A pause.

"She removed you.""

I covered my mouth.

Richard whispered:

"No.""

My mother continued.

"She knew what I discovered. She knew I found the records. She knew I found the children.""

The screen flickered.

"And when she realized I wouldn't stop...""

My mother's voice broke.

"She took my daughter.""

I felt tears burning my eyes.

Not because I was sad.

Because I was angry.

Seventeen years.

Seventeen years of believing I wasn't wanted.

When the truth was someone wanted me too much.

The video continued.

"Emma, there is something else.""

My mother looked directly into the camera.

"Your grandmother didn't place you in foster care because she wanted you gone.""

The room became silent.

"She placed you there because she was waiting.""

Waiting.

For what?

My mother's next words answered.

"Until you turned eighteen.""

The screen went black.

Again.

Nobody spoke for several minutes.

Then Richard stood up.

"I need to find her.""

Claire looked at him.

"Richard.""

"No.""

His voice was different.

Broken.

Angry.

"I spent seventeen years thinking I failed my wife because I couldn't protect my daughter.""

He looked at the document.

"My own mother did this.""

I watched him.

For the first time, I saw the man behind the mystery.

Not a powerful businessman.

Not the son of the Carter family.

Just a father who lost his child.

But I wasn't ready to forgive him.

Not yet.

"Where is she?""

Richard looked at me.

"Who?""

"Margaret.""

He hesitated.

"She lives outside Nashville.""

"Take me there.""

"No.""

The answer came instantly.

I stared at him.

"No?""

"It's dangerous.""

I almost smiled.

"Dangerous?""

I picked up the folder.

"My entire life was stolen from me.""

I stepped closer.

"I was locked in a house with children who disappeared.""

My voice became louder.

"You don't get to tell me what is too dangerous anymore.""

Richard looked at me.

And this time, he didn't argue.

Three hours later, we arrived at the Carter estate.

I knew it was expensive before I even saw the house.

The gate alone was larger than the foster home's entire front yard.

The mansion sat behind rows of trees.

Perfect.

Beautiful.

Cold.

Like a place where secrets could survive forever.

Richard turned off the car.

"You don't have to do this.""

I looked at him.

"Yes, I do.""

He nodded.

Then we walked.

The front door opened before we reached it.

An older woman stood there.

Elegant.

Silver hair.

Perfect posture.

She looked exactly like someone who had spent her life controlling rooms.

Her eyes moved to Richard.

Then to Claire.

Then finally to me.

And she smiled.

Not surprised.

Not afraid.

Almost relieved.

"Emma.""

The sound of my name from her mouth made my skin crawl.

I stopped.

"You knew I was coming.""

Margaret Carter smiled softly.

"I knew you would eventually find the truth.""

Richard stepped forward.

"What did you do?""

Her expression changed slightly.

"Richard.""

"Don't.""

His voice was cold.

"You took my daughter.""

Margaret looked at me.

"No.""

She said it calmly.

"I saved her.""

I felt my hands shake.

"Saved me?""

She walked closer.

"You have no idea what I protected you from.""

"From my mother?""

Her face tightened.

"Your mother was reckless.""

Richard looked furious.

"She was your daughter-in-law.""

"She was a threat.""

The word hung in the air.

I stared.

"You admit it?""

Margaret looked at me.

"I admit she refused to understand what was necessary.""

"What was necessary?""

She reached into her pocket.

Slowly.

I immediately stepped back.

But she only pulled out an old photograph.

She handed it to me.

I looked down.

And my heart stopped.

It was me.

As a baby.

But I wasn't with my mother.

I wasn't with Richard.

I was with Margaret.

And behind us was another person.

Someone I recognized.

Someone from my past.

Someone who had been at Henderson House.

My breath caught.

"No...""

Margaret watched my reaction.

"Now you understand.""

I looked up.

"Understand what?""

Her smile disappeared.

"The person who raised you at Henderson House wasn't the only one watching you.""

A cold silence filled the doorway.

"Emma...""

Margaret stepped closer.

"You've been protected your entire life.""

I stared at her.

"By who?""

She looked over my shoulder.

At Richard.

Then at Claire.

Then back at me.

And whispered:

"By the person you trusted most.""

I felt my stomach drop.

Because behind Margaret...

Standing near the driveway...

Was Mr. Henderson.

Alive.

And he wasn't alone.

Beside him stood a woman holding a file.

A woman whose face I recognized from my childhood records.

My caseworker.

The woman who had just called me days ago.

The woman who warned me to stop searching.

Margaret smiled.

May you like

"Welcome home, Emma.""

"And now you can finally meet the person who signed your disappearance.""
