Chapter 5: The Man Who Lost His Daughter Twice

I couldn't move.

I couldn't speak.

The name echoed through the room.

Richard Carter.

My last name.

The name I had spent my entire life searching for.

The name that was supposed to belong to someone who didn't want me.

But the man standing in front of me wasn't what I expected.

He didn't look like someone who abandoned a child.

He looked broken.

His gray hair was messy.

His expensive jacket was wrinkled.

His eyes were red like he hadn't slept in days.

Like he had been carrying a pain nobody else could see.

Claire stepped between us.

"Richard.""

His eyes never left mine.

"She's here.""

His voice cracked.

After seventeen years.

Those were the only words he could say.

I felt anger rise inside me.

Because sadness was easier to understand.

Anger was easier.

"Don't.""

Richard blinked.

"Emma—"

"Don't say my name.""

His face fell.

I hated that it affected me.

I hated that some part of me wanted to believe him.

But I had learned something at Henderson House.

People could look hurt and still hurt you.

People could cry and still lie.

"You're my father?""

He nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

I laughed.

A painful sound.

"Interesting.""

"Emma...""

"No.""

I stepped forward.

"You don't get to say that like this is some happy reunion.""

His eyes filled with tears.

"I know.""

"Do you?""

My voice shook.

"Because I spent seventeen years thinking my parents left me.""

Richard lowered his head.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

I pointed at him.

"You don't know what it's like to wonder why you weren't worth staying for.""

His face tightened.

"I know exactly what it's like.""

That answer stopped me.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Richard looked at Claire.

"What did Henderson tell her?""

"Nothing.""

Claire shook her head.

"She found the files.""

Richard closed his eyes.

"The transfer files.""

I stared at him.

"You knew?""

He didn't answer.

That was enough.

"You knew about the children.""

"I knew something was happening.""

"Something?""

My anger returned.

"Twenty-seven children disappeared.""

Richard looked at the floor.

"I know.""

"How?""

His silence told me everything.

I stepped back.

"You were involved.""

"No.""

The answer came immediately.

Too quickly.

"I was not involved.""

"Then explain.""

Richard looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something in his expression.

Not fear.

Guilt.

"I failed you.""

The room became quiet.

"I thought I could protect you.""

I crossed my arms.

"By letting someone put me in foster care?""

"No.""

His voice broke.

"By hiding you.""

Richard sat down at the small table in the back room.

Claire stayed near the door.

I remained standing.

I didn't trust any of them enough to relax.

Richard looked older when he sat.

Like the weight of the past finally caught up with him.

"When your mother and I had you, we were living a normal life.""

I almost laughed.

"Normal?""

"Yes.""

He looked at me.

"Until I discovered what my family was involved in.""

My eyes narrowed.

"Your family?""

Richard nodded.

"My father.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What did he do?""

Richard looked away.

"He created the foundation that funded the foster program.""

I felt sick.

The words connected.

The money.

The files.

The missing children.

"You mean your family paid for it?""

"No.""

He slammed his hand on the table.

The sudden movement made me jump.

Then he immediately softened.

"I'm sorry.""

He took a breath.

"My family paid for legitimate programs. They used those programs as a cover.""

"For what?""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"For controlling children who had valuable information.""

I stared at him.

"What information could children have?""

He looked at me.

"Sometimes children see things adults think they don't.""

A memory flashed through my mind.

A little boy on the stairs.

Caleb.

His suitcase.

His scared eyes.

"What happened to the children?""

Richard didn't answer.

"Tell me.""

He looked at Claire.

She nodded slightly.

Richard swallowed.

"Some were sold into illegal guardianships.""

My stomach twisted.

"Some were sent away.""

"Where?""

"We don't know.""

"And the others?""

Richard's silence was worse.

I looked away.

I didn't need him to say it.

"Why me?""

The question came out before I could stop it.

Richard looked at me.

"Because you saw something.""

"I was a baby.""

"Not then.""

He reached into his jacket.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He pulled out an old envelope.

My entire body tensed.

Another file.

Another secret.

He noticed.

"It's not a trap.""

I didn't move.

"It's something your mother left.""

Those words changed everything.

My mother.

Not a memory.

Not a photograph.

Something real.

I took the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The paper was old.

The handwriting was shaky.

I recognized it immediately.

I didn't know how.

But I did.

Maybe it was something buried deep in my memory.

Maybe a child remembers things adults think disappear.

The first line made my breath stop.

*My beautiful Emma,*

I covered my mouth.

Richard looked away.

Giving me privacy.

I read.

If you are reading this, something happened and I couldn't come back for you.

My vision blurred.

I need you to know one thing.

I never left you.

A tear dropped onto the paper.

Your father tried to protect us. He thought money and power could stop them. He was wrong.

The people chasing us don't care about losing everything.

They only care about keeping control.

I looked up.

"Who are they?""

Richard's face hardened.

"The Carter Foundation board.""

I looked back at the letter.

Emma, if anyone tells you I abandoned you, don't believe them.

I spent every day trying to find a way back.

The day they took you from me was the worst day of my life.

My hands shook.

"They took me?""

Richard nodded.

I looked at him.

"Who?""

He didn't answer.

Claire did.

"Your grandmother.""

I froze.

"My what?""

Richard looked down.

"My mother.""

The room felt colder.

"She took me?""

Richard nodded.

"She arranged your foster placement.""

"Why?""

Richard's eyes filled with anger.

"Because she wanted control of everything.""

"Everything?""

"Me. The company. The foundation.""

"And me?""

He swallowed.

"You were the one thing she couldn't control.""

I stared at him.

"So she erased me.""

Richard looked at the floor.

"Yes.""

A sound interrupted us.

A phone ringing.

Not mine.

Not Claire's.

Richard looked at his screen.

His expression changed.

"What?""

I watched his face become pale.

"How did you get this number?""

Silence.

Then his eyes moved to me.

"No.""

He stood suddenly.

"What did you do?""

I stepped back.

"Who is it?""

Richard didn't answer.

He ended the call.

Then another phone rang.

This time, Claire's.

She looked at the screen.

And her face changed.

"That's impossible.""

"What?""

She slowly turned the phone around.

The message was from an unknown number.

A picture.

It was the room we were standing in.

Taken seconds ago.

Underneath it were five words.

*She was never the target.*

My blood ran cold.

Richard grabbed the phone.

Then his expression changed.

Because beneath the message was another line.

A name.

Not mine.

Not Claire's.

His.

*Richard Carter: Termination scheduled tonight.*

The lights suddenly went out.

The entire room fell into darkness.

Then we heard the door downstairs open.

Someone had found us.

May you like

And this time...

They weren't coming for me.
