Chapter 6: The Secret My Mother Died Protecting

The sound of the door opening below us froze everyone.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

For seventeen years, I had lived afraid of one man.

Mr. Henderson.

I thought he was the worst thing waiting for me.

But standing in that dark room, listening to footsteps climbing the stairs, I finally understood something.

Henderson was never the beginning.

He was only a piece of something much bigger.

Richard grabbed my arm.

"Stay behind me.""

I pulled away.

"No.""

He looked at me.

"Emma.""

"I spent my whole life with people telling me where to stand.""

My voice shook.

"Not anymore.""

For a moment, he stared at me.

Then something changed in his expression.

Pride.

Like he was seeing the daughter he had lost.

Not the scared child he remembered.

Claire moved toward the back door.

"There is another exit.""

Richard nodded.

"Take Emma.""

I immediately stopped.

"Wait.""

They both looked at me.

"If someone is hunting us because of something I know, running won't solve anything.""

Claire frowned.

"Emma—"

"No.""

I held up the folder.

"Everyone has been hiding things from me. My mother. My father.

Henderson. Everyone.""

The footsteps grew louder.

Closer.

"I want the truth.""

Richard looked at the folder.

Then at me.

And finally nodded.

"Then you need to know everything.""

A loud crash came from downstairs.

The front door had been forced open.

Richard's face tightened.

"We don't have time.""

He grabbed an old wooden box from a shelf behind him.

I hadn't noticed it before.

He opened it.

Inside was a small video camera.

An old one.

And several memory cards.

"What is that?""

"Your mother's insurance.""

Claire looked surprised.

"You still have it?""

Richard nodded.

"She made me promise.""

"Promise what?""

Richard looked at me.

"That if they ever found you, you would see this.""

He handed me the camera.

My fingers trembled.

"What's on it?""

"Everything.""

The footsteps stopped outside the room.

A man's voice came through the door.

"Richard.""

Nobody spoke.

The voice was calm.

Almost polite.

"Open the door.""

Richard's face changed.

He knew that voice.

"Who is it?""

He whispered:

"My brother.""

I stared at him.

"Your brother?""

Richard nodded.

"The one who took control after my father died.""

Another knock.

"Richard, I know you're in there.""

The voice continued.

"You always were terrible at hiding.""

Claire whispered:

"Daniel Carter.""

My stomach tightened.

Another Carter.

Another secret.

Richard looked at me.

"Emma, listen carefully.""

The door handle moved.

"You need to understand something.""

The lock started shaking.

"Your mother didn't just discover what they were doing.""

The door cracked slightly.

"She discovered why they were doing it.""

The door burst open.

We escaped through the back hallway seconds before Daniel Carter entered the room.

I only saw him for a moment.

But I understood immediately why people feared him.

He wasn't loud.

He wasn't angry.

He didn't need to be.

He walked into the room like he owned every inch of it.

Because he probably did.

Gray suit.

Perfect hair.

Cold eyes.

The kind of person who never had to raise his voice because everyone else already knew the consequences.

He looked around.

Then smiled.

"Richard.""

Richard pushed me behind him.

Daniel noticed.

And his smile disappeared.

"So.""

His eyes moved to me.

"She finally knows.""

My stomach turned.

Daniel looked at me like he had been waiting years for this moment.

"Emma Carter.""

Hearing my name from him felt wrong.

Like he had stolen it.

"Stay away from her," Richard said.

Daniel laughed quietly.

"You still think you're protecting her.""

"I am.""

"No.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"You're repeating the same mistake your wife made.""

My breath caught.

"My mother?""

Daniel looked at me.

"She was always too emotional.""

Richard's expression turned furious.

"Don't talk about her.""

"Why?""

Daniel smiled.

"Because you know I'm right.""

Claire pulled my arm.

"We need to go.""

We moved toward the exit.

Daniel didn't stop us.

That scared me more.

We drove for almost an hour before anyone spoke.

The city lights disappeared behind us.

The roads became empty.

I sat in the back seat holding the camera.

The object that supposedly contained my entire life.

Finally, I looked at Richard.

"What was my mother protecting?""

He kept his eyes on the road.

"Proof.""

"Proof of what?""

"The Carter Foundation wasn't helping children.""

I waited.

"It was collecting them.""

My skin went cold.

"For what?""

Richard's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

"Information.""

"That doesn't make sense.""

"It will.""

He looked at me through the mirror.

"Your mother found financial records.""

"About the foster homes?""

"Yes.""

"And?""

"She discovered the children weren't randomly selected.""

I felt my heart slow.

"What do you mean?""

Richard swallowed.

"They were chosen.""

A terrible feeling settled inside me.

"Chosen for what?""

He didn't answer.

Claire did.

"Connections.""

I looked at her.

"Explain.""

"The children came from specific families.""

"Rich families?""

"Sometimes.""

"Then why put them in foster care?""

Richard finally spoke.

"Because some families had enemies.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

He looked at me.

"It means the people behind this weren't just stealing children.""

A pause.

"They were replacing them.""

The car went silent.

I stared.

"Replacing?""

Richard nodded.

"Changing records. Creating new identities. Moving children where they wanted them.""

My breathing became shallow.

"Why?""

"Money.""

"Power.""

"Control.""

Three words.

Three answers.

But none of them felt real.

Then I remembered the folder.

The missing children.

The names.

"Caleb.""

Richard looked back.

"Who?""

"One of the kids.""

I closed my eyes.

"The boy I saw leave Henderson House.""

Claire looked at me.

"Describe him.""

I did.

Brown hair.

Twelve years old.

Blue jacket.

Always carried a red backpack.

Richard suddenly went pale.

"That's impossible.""

"What?""

He didn't answer.

He pulled the car over.

"Richard?""

He stared ahead.

"Emma...""

His voice changed.

"That boy wasn't supposed to still be alive.""

The words hit me.

"What?""

Richard looked at me.

"The files I saw showed Caleb's transfer date.""

"And?""

"He was listed as deceased.""

My blood ran cold.

I couldn't speak.

Claire covered her mouth.

"Then why did Emma see him?""

Nobody answered.

Because there was only one possibility.

The records were fake.

Or someone was still moving children after they were declared gone.

Richard turned the car back on.

"We need to find Caleb.""

"How?""

Richard looked at the camera in my hands.

"Your mother recorded everything.""

We stopped at an abandoned house outside the city.

Richard unlocked the door.

Inside was a hidden room.

A place filled with boxes.

Documents.

Photographs.

Names.

My mother had been collecting evidence for years.

I walked slowly through the room.

There were hundreds of pages.

Hundreds of lives.

Then I saw something on the wall.

A picture.

A group photo.

Children standing in front of a building.

I stepped closer.

My breath stopped.

I recognized one face.

Caleb.

Older.

But alive.

Beside him was another child.

A girl.

And underneath the photo was a handwritten note.

*Children recovered: 3*

*Children missing: 24*

I turned to Richard.

"Where is the video?""

He pointed to the camera.

"Play it.""

I inserted the memory card.

The screen flickered.

Then a woman appeared.

My mother.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

She looked directly into the camera.

And the first words she said made my knees weak.

"Emma, if you're watching this...""

She paused.

Tears filled her eyes.

"...it means they found you.""

The video glitched.

Then she whispered:

"There is something you need to know about your father.""

The screen went black.

One final sentence appeared.

Recorded three days before her disappearance.

*Richard Carter is not the person who betrayed us.*

I stared at the screen.

Then the next line appeared.

May you like

And my entire world changed.

*The person who betrayed us was someone Emma has known her entire life.*
