Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Before I Did

I didn’t drive home.

Not immediately.

I sat in my car outside Beatriz’s house with the engine off and the marriage counseling document glowing on my phone screen.

Two names.

Two signatures.

One date.

Two weeks before Mateo proposed to me.

The world outside kept moving.

Cars passed.

People walked along the sidewalk.

A dog barked somewhere down the street.

Everything looked normal.

But my life no longer felt normal.

Because I had spent five years believing my marriage began with a clean page.

Now I was realizing Mateo had brought an entire unfinished story into our relationship.

And I had been the only person who didn’t know.

My phone rang.

Mateo.

I stared at his name.

For a few seconds, I considered ignoring it.

Then I answered.

“Where are you?””

His voice sounded worried.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Worried.

“I’m in my car.””

“Are you leaving?””

I looked at the house in front of me.

At the place where his family had gathered to discuss my life like I wasn’t a person sitting across from them.

“I don’t know.””

Silence.

Then:

“Alicia, please come back inside.””

“No.””

My answer came immediately.

“Alicia—”

“No, Mateo.””

I closed my eyes.

“I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“I don’t need another explanation.””

He went quiet.

“I need the truth.””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

“No.””

I looked at the document again.

“You’re telling me pieces.””

A long pause.

Then he whispered:

“I was scared.””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I was tired of hearing that word.

“Everyone is scared, Mateo.””

“I know.””

“No. I don’t think you do.””

I looked at the house.

“Your family was scared of losing control.””

I looked at my phone.

“You were scared of hurting me.””

I swallowed.

“And I was the only one who had no choice in any of this.””

“Alicia…”

“I’m going home.””

“Can we talk tonight?””

I almost said yes.

That was the hardest part.

A part of me still wanted to fix things.

Still wanted to sit across from him at our kitchen table and find the version of us that existed before today.

But I knew something now.

You cannot repair a house while pretending the foundation is not cracked.

“I’ll talk to you when I’m ready.””

Then I ended the call.

When I arrived home, the first thing I did was walk through every room.

Not because I was looking for something.

Because I was trying to remember.

The living room.

The kitchen.

The hallway where Mateo hung our wedding photos.

The small corner near the window where I kept my plants.

This house had been my safe place.

Now it felt like evidence.

Every object carried a question.

Was this bought with money I didn’t know about?

Was this room part of a future someone else designed?

Was Mateo imagining another woman standing here?

I hated that my mind went there.

But once someone opens a door, you cannot pretend you never saw what was behind it.

I changed clothes, made tea, and sat at the kitchen counter.

At 11:42 p.m., I heard the front door open.

I didn’t move.

Mateo walked inside quietly.

He looked exhausted.

Not like someone caught.

Like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.

“Alicia.””

I kept looking at my tea.

“You said you needed space.””

“I did.””

“Then why are you here?””

He looked around.

“Our home.””

I looked up.

“Is it?””

The question hurt him.

Good.

Because I was hurting too.

He sat across from me.

“I never stopped loving you.””

I didn’t answer.

“I know I made mistakes.””

“You keep calling them mistakes.””

“What should I call them?””

“Choices.””

He looked down.

I continued.

“You chose not to tell me about Valentina.””

“Yes.””

“You chose to meet her after we were married.””

“Yes.””

“You chose to accept your family’s money without telling me the truth behind it.””

His silence answered.

“And you chose to let me walk into that house today and discover everything from strangers.””

His face tightened.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

I nodded.

“That’s honest, at least.””

The silence between us was heavy.

Finally, Mateo spoke.

“There’s something you need to know about Valentina.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course there is.””

“I’m serious.””

“So am I.””

He leaned forward.

“She’s not doing this only because she wants revenge.””

I studied him.

“Then why?””

“Because she believes I destroyed her life.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Mateo looked away.

“When I ended our engagement, everything changed for her.””

“Because you left?””

“Because of how I left.””

I waited.

He took a breath.

“I didn’t tell her the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That I was already in love with someone else.””

My chest tightened.

“Me?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked away.

That should have comforted me.

It didn’t.

Because love did not erase dishonesty.

“What did you tell her?””

“That I needed time.””

“And she believed you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His voice became quieter.

“Because I had spent years making her believe our future was certain.””

I looked at him.

“And then you met me.””

“Yes.””

“And instead of being honest with her…”

“I ran.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I ran from her. I ran from my family. I ran from the consequences.””

He looked at me.

“And then I built a new life with you.””

I stared at him.

“You didn’t build a new life.””

My voice softened.

“You built a beautiful life on top of something unfinished.””

He closed his eyes.

That hurt because he knew.

I stood and walked toward the counter.

“Why did you propose to me?””

The question made him look up.

“What?””

“Why?””

I turned around.

“Was it because you knew I was the woman you wanted?””

“Yes.””

“Or because I was the escape?””

His face changed.

“No.””

“Mateo.””

He stood.

“No.””

His voice was stronger.

“You were never an escape.””

I watched him carefully.

“You were the first thing in my life that felt real.””

I wanted to believe him.

I really did.

But then I remembered the photograph.

The papers.

The secrets.

“Then why didn’t you protect that?””

He had no answer.

The next morning, I woke up to a message from an unknown number.

I almost deleted it.

Almost.

Then I saw the name.

Valentina.

My hands froze.

The message was short.

*We need to talk.*

I stared at the screen.

A second message arrived.

*Not because I want Mateo back.*

Then another.

*Because you deserve to know what he never told you.*

I looked at the words for a long time.

Then I replied.

*Where?*

The answer came immediately.

A café downtown.

One hour.

Valentina was already there when I arrived.

She looked nothing like the villain I had imagined.

That bothered me.

Because it would have been easier if she looked cruel.

If she looked like someone I could hate.

Instead, she looked tired.

Like someone who had carried anger for too long.

She stood when she saw me.

“Alicia.””

I sat down.

“You know who I am.””

She gave a small smile.

“Yes.””

“How?””

She looked at her coffee.

“Because I knew about you before you knew about me.””

The words made my stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?””

Valentina took a breath.

“It means Mateo told me about you.””

“When?””

“Before he proposed.””

I stared.

The room seemed to go quiet.

“What?””

“He told me he had met someone.””

My hands tightened around my cup.

“Why?””

“Because he was ending things with me.””

“And you accepted that?””

She looked at me.

“I accepted that he didn’t love me anymore.””

That answer surprised me.

“Then why are you doing this?””

Her eyes moved to the window.

“Because he lied to both of us.””

I stayed silent.

Valentina reached into her bag.

She pulled out a folder.

And placed it on the table.

“I didn’t send you those documents to destroy your marriage.””

I looked at the folder.

“Then why?””

She pushed it toward me.

“Because there is one thing Mateo never told you.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What?””

Valentina looked directly at me.

“The reason your house became part of this fight.””

I opened the folder.

The first page made my blood run cold.

Because it was not a property agreement.

It was a letter.

Written by Mateo.

To Valentina.

Dated one month before my wedding.

May you like

And the first sentence began:

*“If Alicia never finds out the truth, we can all move on.””*
