Chapter 5: The Photograph From Our First Year
I stared at the photograph until the words on my phone blurred.
Not because I didn’t understand what I was seeing.
Because I understood too well.
Mateo.
My husband.
Standing beside Valentina Serrano.
His arm was not around her.
They weren’t smiling.
They weren’t touching.
But they were together.
And the date at the bottom was impossible to ignore.
Three months after our wedding.
Three months after I had walked down the aisle believing I was the only woman in his life.
Three months after he had promised me forever.
My fingers went cold.
“Alicia?””
Mateo’s voice came from behind me.
I didn’t turn around.
Not yet.
Because I knew if I looked at his face, I might see an explanation.
And I was terrified there wouldn’t be one.
“Who sent this?””
My voice was barely above a whisper.
Nobody answered.
I looked at the screen again.
The message was still there.
*I think you deserve to know what your husband did before you married him.*
My eyes moved to Mateo.
“Who sent this?””
He looked at my phone.
Then his entire expression changed.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
That was worse.
“You know.””
Mateo’s lips parted.
“Alicia…”
“You know who sent this.””
He looked away.
And in that moment, something inside me finally broke.
Because lies could be accidental.
Secrets could be complicated.
But recognition?
Recognition meant this had existed before I knew about it.
“Tell me.””
He stayed silent.
“Tell me, Mateo.””
Beatriz stepped forward.
“Alicia, maybe we should all calm down.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
My voice sharpened.
“Everyone in this room has been calm while I’ve been discovering my own marriage.””
Nobody spoke.
“I’m the only person here who didn’t know.””
I looked at Mateo.
“So I’m done being patient.””
His shoulders dropped.
“It was Valentina.””
Of course.
The answer I already knew.
But hearing it from him still felt like a wound opening.
“She sent this?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation was becoming the soundtrack of our marriage.
“Because she wants to hurt me.””
I stared.
“That’s your explanation?””
“It’s the truth.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You’re still leaving things out.””
He looked exhausted.
“Alicia…”
“What happened three months after we got married?””
The room went silent.
I watched his face.
The man who had comforted me when my father was sick.
The man who held me through difficult nights.
The man who knew every dream I had.
Now he couldn’t look at me.
“I met her.””
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed the room.
“You met her.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I told you. My family—”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I’m asking why you met her.””
Mateo looked at the floor.
“She contacted me.””
“And?””
“And I agreed to meet.””
“Why?””
He closed his eyes.
“Because I wanted closure.””
I laughed softly.
“Closure.””
The word sounded ridiculous.
“Three months after our wedding, you met your former fiancée because you wanted closure?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me.””
“No.””
“Why?””
His answer came slowly.
“Because I knew you would be hurt.””
I stared at him.
“So you made the decision for me.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
I pointed at him.
“You decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””
“I thought I was protecting our marriage.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were protecting yourself from the consequences.””
Nobody moved.
Even Beatriz stayed quiet.
For the first time, I think she realized this wasn’t going the way she expected.
She wanted me to fight with Valentina.
She wanted me to blame the other woman.
But the truth was standing right in front of me.
My problem was not Valentina.
My problem was the man who promised me honesty.
“Where did you meet her?””
Mateo swallowed.
“At a café.””
“Just a conversation?””
“Yes.””
“Nothing else?””
His silence returned.
I looked at him.
“Mateo.””
He looked up.
“There was nothing physical.””
I waited.
“That’s not what I asked.””
His face changed.
“Alicia…”
“Did you tell her you regretted marrying me?””
The silence that followed was enough.
My heart sank.
“You did.””
“No.””
“Then why can’t you answer?””
He sat down.
“I was confused.””
The word made me angry.
Not because it wasn’t true.
Because it was too easy.
“I was confused.””
I repeated it.
“That’s what you’re giving me?””
“I was under pressure.””
“From who?””
“My family.””
I looked around the room.
At all of them.
“Of course.””
Beatriz looked offended.
“Don’t blame us for everything.””
I turned toward her.
“You contacted his ex-fiancée after he married me.””
Her mouth closed.
“You convinced him this was a mistake.””
“That is not what happened.””
“Then what happened?””
No answer.
Again.
I looked at Mateo.
“Did you love her?””
His eyes filled with pain.
“That was a long time ago.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He looked at me.
“I loved who I thought she was.””
“And me?””
His face softened.
“I love you.””
I wanted to believe him.
That was the worst part.
Even after everything.
A part of me still wanted to believe him.
But love was not just a feeling.
Love was what you protected.
What you respected.
What you chose when nobody was watching.
And Mateo had made choices when I wasn’t watching.
I looked down at the photograph again.
“Why does she have this?””
Mateo didn’t answer.
“Why does she have a picture of you from after our wedding?””
His expression changed.
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“Then think.””
He rubbed his hands together.
“I don’t know how she got it.””
Beatriz suddenly spoke.
“She probably kept records.””
I looked at her.
“Records?””
The word bothered me.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then Camila, the attorney, quietly said:
“Valentina has been collecting information for years.””
I turned toward her.
“Why?””
Camila looked uncomfortable.
“Because she believed the marriage between you and Mateo was based on deception.””
I frowned.
“What deception?””
She looked at Mateo.
Not me.
Him.
And I knew.
There was another secret.
Another thing everyone knew except me.
“Mateo?””
He looked away.
“What deception?””
Finally, he spoke.
“When I ended things with Valentina…”
He stopped.
“Go on.””
“She didn’t know about you yet.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
“I mean…”
He struggled to explain.
“She thought I was leaving because I wanted time. She didn’t know I had already met you.””
The room went silent.
I felt something twist in my stomach.
“How long did she think that?””
Mateo didn’t answer.
“How long, Mateo?””
He whispered:
“Six months.””
Six months.
I did the math.
Six months of him dating me.
Six months of building a relationship with me.
Six months of telling me he was falling in love.
While another woman still believed she was waiting for him.
I felt sick.
“You let her believe you were coming back?””
“No.””
“But you didn’t tell her.””
“No.””
“Why?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because I was afraid.””
Again.
Fear.
Always fear.
I picked up my handbag.
“I need to leave.””
“Alicia.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I need one day where nobody gives me a new piece of information.””
He stood.
“Please don’t go.””
I almost smiled.
“You should have thought about that before you created a marriage where I was the last person to know anything.””
I walked outside.
The air felt colder than it should have.
I sat in my car but didn’t start the engine.
I just stared at my hands.
Five years.
Five years of memories.
Could all of them be real if they were built on things I never knew?
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, no words.
Just a document.
I opened it.
At first, I thought it was another photo.
Another piece of evidence.
Then I saw the title.
My breath stopped.
*Marriage Counseling Agreement*
The date was from two weeks before my wedding.
And at the bottom were two signatures.
Mateo Cárdenas.
And Valentina Serrano.
I stared at the screen.
Because I had never gone to marriage counseling before I married Mateo.
But someone had.
Someone had planned a future with him.
Someone had been trying to save their relationship.
Before I even knew he existed.
Then another message appeared.
*Ask your husband why he needed counseling with his ex two weeks before he proposed to you.*
I looked back through the windshield.
Through the glass, I could see Mateo standing outside Beatriz’s house.
Watching me.
And for the first time since I met him…
May you like
I wondered if I had married a man who chose me.
Or a man who chose me because someone else rejected him first.
