Chapter 2: The Name on the Document

The first thing I noticed when I walked into Beatriz Cárdenas’s house was that everyone was already seated.

Waiting.

Just like the night before.

Except this time, nobody looked hungry.

They looked prepared.

The long dining table in the center of the room had been cleared completely. No plates. No food. No family gathering decorations.

Only documents.

Folders.

A silver tray holding coffee cups.

And a woman I had never seen before sitting beside Beatriz.

She wore a dark blue suit and held a leather briefcase on her lap.

An attorney.

Mateo walked in behind me.

He had barely spoken during the drive.

For twenty minutes, I watched the streets of Querétaro pass by the car window while the man I had shared my life with sat beside me like a stranger.

Every time I looked at him, I expected him to explain.

To tell me there was some misunderstanding.

To tell me his family had gone too far.

But Mateo only gripped the steering wheel and said the same thing.

“I’m sorry.””

Sorry was becoming a word that meant nothing.

Because apologies were easy.

Truth was harder.

Beatriz looked up when we entered.

“I’m glad you came.””

I placed my handbag on the chair beside me.

“You sounded very confident that I would.””

She smiled.

“I knew you would want answers.””

“No.””

I looked around the room.

“I came because you threatened my home.””

The smile disappeared.

Good.

At least we were finally being honest.

Mateo’s father, Ernesto, cleared his throat.

“Alicia, nobody threatened anything.””

I looked at him.

“Your wife said tomorrow you would decide what happens to my house.””

He shifted uncomfortably.

Beatriz interrupted.

“Because you don’t understand the situation.””

I sat down.

“Then explain it.””

The attorney opened her briefcase.

I watched carefully.

There was something strange about the way everyone was acting.

They weren’t angry anymore.

They were confident.

Like they knew something I didn’t.

The attorney placed a folder on the table.

“My name is Camila Robles,” she said.

“I represent the Cárdenas family in this matter.””

“Which matter?””

She looked at Beatriz.

Then back at me.

“Alicia, before we discuss the property, we need to discuss the history behind it.””

I almost laughed.

“The history behind my own house?””

Mateo looked down.

That hurt.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what they were about to say.

Beatriz folded her hands.

“When Mateo met you, he told us he was happy.””

I said nothing.

“He said you were different.””

The way she said different made it sound like an insult.

“But there was someone else before you.””

I looked at Mateo.

“Valentina.””

His face tightened.

Beatriz noticed.

“Yes.””

The room became quiet.

“Valentina Serrano.””

I had heard the name once.

The night before.

But hearing it again from his mother’s mouth felt different.

Like I was finally meeting the ghost that had been standing between us for years.

“She was supposed to be my daughter-in-law,” Beatriz said.

I leaned back.

“Supposed to be?””

“Yes.””

“And what happened?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Ernesto spoke.

“Mateo made a mistake.””

I looked at him.

“A mistake?””

“He ended things.””

Mateo finally looked up.

“Dad.””

“No,” Ernesto said.

“You need to hear this.””

His voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

“Valentina came from a respected family. She understood our values. She understood what marriage meant.””

I stared at him.

“And I don’t?””

Beatriz looked away.

That was answer enough.

I turned to Mateo.

“Is this why they hate me?””

His silence was painful.

“Alicia…”

“No. I want him to answer.””

Mateo swallowed.

“Yes.””

One word.

One devastating word.

“Yes.””

I felt something crack inside me.

Not because his family disliked me.

People could dislike anyone.

But because I had spent five years believing my husband had chosen me completely.

Now I was learning there had always been a comparison.

A shadow.

A woman I had never met but somehow had been competing against.

“I loved you,” Mateo said quietly.

I looked at him.

“But you never told me.””

“I thought it was over.””

“Was it?””

His eyes moved away.

And that tiny movement told me everything.

The attorney opened the folder.

Inside were several papers.

“I’m going to explain the legal concern,” Camila said.

I looked at her.

“Legal concern?””

“Yes.””

She slid one document across the table.

“This concerns the property where you and Mateo currently live.””

I picked it up.

The address was correct.

My home.

I scanned the page.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

I looked again.

There was a signature.

Not mine.

Not Mateo’s.

Valentina Serrano.

My heart started beating faster.

“What does her name have to do with my house?””

Mateo closed his eyes.

“Because…”

He stopped.

I looked at him.

“Because what?””

Beatriz spoke instead.

“Because before you existed in Mateo’s life, there was an agreement.””

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“What agreement?””

Camila placed another document beside it.

“This agreement was made five years ago.””

Five years.

The exact year Mateo and I met.

I looked at him.

“You told me you were single.””

“I was.””

“Then why is she on this document?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Beatriz leaned forward.

“Because Valentina and Mateo were engaged.””

“I know that.””

“No.””

Her voice lowered.

“You don’t know everything.””

The room went silent.

Camila tapped the paper.

“According to this agreement, the property was part of a planned marriage arrangement.””

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because I bought this house.””

Camila nodded.

“Yes.””

That answer confused me.

“Yes?””

“Yes. You purchased the house.””

I frowned.

“Then what is the problem?””

She looked at Mateo.

“The problem is that Mateo was involved in the original arrangement before the purchase.””

I turned toward him.

“Mateo?””

He looked like he wanted to disappear.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

“When were you going to tell me that your family had once planned your entire future with another woman?””

“Alicia—”

“When were you going to tell me that my house was somehow connected to her?””

“I didn’t know it would become an issue.””

I stood up.

The chair scraped against the floor.

“You didn’t know?””

Everyone watched me.

“You brought me into a marriage where your family was still holding paperwork about another woman.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

Mateo looked at the table.

And that was when I realized something.

My husband wasn’t hiding a small detail.

He was hiding a chapter of his life.

A chapter everyone else had read except me.

Beatriz sighed.

“This is exactly why we needed this meeting.””

I turned toward her.

“Because you wanted to embarrass me?””

“No.””

“Because you wanted to see if I was good enough?””

“No.””

Her expression hardened.

“Because we needed to know whether Mateo made the right choice.””

The words were cruel.

But somehow, they didn’t hurt as much as Mateo staying silent.

I looked at him.

“Did you make the right choice?””

The question surprised him.

His eyes lifted.

“Alicia…”

“No. Answer me.””

The room waited.

For once, I wanted everyone to hear him.

“I chose you,” he said.

I studied his face.

But then Camila quietly cleared her throat.

“I’m sorry to interrupt.””

I turned.

The attorney reached into her briefcase again.

“There is one more document.””

I almost laughed.

Of course there was.

Another secret.

Another paper.

Another piece of my husband’s life I had never seen.

She placed it in front of Mateo.

Not me.

Him.

And the moment he read the first line, all color disappeared from his face.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

His hands started shaking.

Beatriz looked nervous for the first time.

“Mateo?””

He slowly pushed the paper away.

I reached for it.

Then I saw the name at the top.

*Valentina Serrano.*

But underneath her name was something else.

Something that made the entire room go silent.

A date.

A date from after Mateo and I were already married.

I looked at my husband.

“What happened on this date?””

Mateo stared at the document.

May you like

And for the first time since I knew him…

He looked terrified of the truth.
