Chapter 7: The Night Everyone Lied
Nia read the message one more time.
*“Ask Caleb why he never told you what happened the night Daniel disappeared.””*
Her fingers went cold.
She hated that the message didn’t surprise her anymore.
A week ago, she would have laughed at the idea that Caleb was hiding something this serious.
She would have defended him.
She would have told anyone accusing him that they didn’t understand him.
But now?
Now she knew better.
The worst secrets weren’t always hidden behind angry faces.
Sometimes they were hidden behind gentle voices.
Behind apologies.
Behind people saying, I was only trying to protect you.
Rachel watched her carefully.
“Nia?””
She looked up.
“Sorry.””
“What did the message say?””
Nia hesitated.
Then she handed over the phone.
Rachel read it.
Her expression became serious.
“Do you know what this refers to?””
“No.””
“Does Caleb?””
Nia looked away.
“I don’t know anymore.””
Rachel placed the phone down.
“Then that’s where we start.””
Nia nodded slowly.
But inside, she already knew.
Finding the truth meant facing Caleb.
And she wasn’t sure she was ready for what she might discover.
She found him outside the apartment where she was staying.
Not at the door.
Not calling.
Just sitting in his car across the street.
Waiting.
Nia stopped walking when she saw him.
For a moment, she considered turning around.
Pretending she didn’t notice.
But she was tired of running.
She walked toward the car.
Caleb immediately stepped out.
“Nia.””
His voice sounded relieved.
“I was worried.””
She stared at him.
“Were you?””
The question hurt him.
But she didn’t look away.
“I deserve that.””
“Yes, you do.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
Nia held up her phone.
“Someone messaged me.””
His expression changed.
“What did they say?””
She watched him carefully.
“About Daniel Carter.””
The color drained from his face.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Nia noticed.
“You know something.””
Caleb looked down.
“Nia…”
“No.””
Her voice became firm.
“Not this time.””
He stayed quiet.
“Tell me the truth.””
Caleb looked around.
“We shouldn’t talk here.””
She almost laughed.
“Of course.””
“What?””
“Every time there’s a secret, we have to find somewhere else to talk.””
“Nia.””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“I spent months living in that house thinking I was crazy for feeling like something was wrong.””
Her voice shook.
“I kept telling myself I was imagining things.””
Caleb looked guilty.
“But I wasn’t.””
“No.””
He admitted it quietly.
“You weren’t.””
That answer hurt more than denial.
Because he knew.
He had known she was right.
“Then tell me.””
Caleb closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he unlocked the car.
“Get in.””
Nia hesitated.
But she followed.
They drove without speaking.
This time, Caleb didn’t take her to a park.
He drove farther.
Out of the city.
To a small cemetery surrounded by trees.
Nia stared through the windshield.
“Why are we here?””
Caleb parked.
Then looked at her.
“Because this is where it started.””
Nia felt a chill.
“What started?””
He got out of the car.
She followed slowly.
They walked between rows of graves.
Finally, Caleb stopped.
At an old stone marker.
Nia read the name.
*Daniel Carter.*
Her breath caught.
“What?””
Caleb stared at the grave.
“Daniel didn’t disappear.””
Nia looked at him.
“He died?””
Caleb nodded.
“When?””
“The same year your grandmother died.””
Nia felt confused.
“But the article said he disappeared.””
“Because nobody wanted people asking questions.””
“Who?””
Caleb looked at the grave.
“My mother.””
Nia froze.
“What?””
“She told everyone Daniel ran away.””
“Why?””
Caleb was silent.
“Caleb.””
He swallowed.
“Because Daniel was trying to expose her.””
The wind moved through the trees.
Nia stared.
“Expose her for what?””
Caleb looked at her.
“For taking money from the trust.””
Nia felt sick.
“Daniel knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“He was your grandmother’s son. He helped create the trust.””
Nia looked back at the grave.
“My grandmother had two children.””
“Yes.””
“And Vanessa stole from both of them?””
Caleb nodded.
“My mother thought Daniel would go to the police.””
“Did he?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Caleb looked away.
“Because he was trying to protect someone.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
Nia’s heart sank.
“Caleb.””
He whispered:
“Me.””
The answer stunned her.
“You?””
He nodded.
“Daniel knew my mother was using me.””
“Using you for what?””
Caleb looked at the ground.
“For access.””
Nia felt confused.
“Access to what?””
He took a deep breath.
“The trust required someone connected to the family to manage certain legal matters.””
Nia stared.
“Your mother used you.””
“Yes.””
“And you let her?””
His face tightened.
“I was nineteen.””
The anger in Nia softened slightly.
Only slightly.
“You were still old enough to know something was wrong.””
“I did know.””
He looked at her.
“I just didn’t know how bad it was.””
Nia crossed her arms.
“So what happened to Daniel?””
Caleb looked at the grave.
“My mother confronted him.””
“And?””
“She threatened him.””
Nia waited.
“And then?””
Caleb’s voice became quieter.
“Then there was an accident.””
Nia frowned.
“An accident?””
“Yes.””
“What kind?””
Caleb looked like he hated saying the words.
“A car accident.””
Nia stared.
“Was she responsible?””
“I don’t know.””
“But you suspect.””
Caleb didn’t answer.
Again.
That silence.
“Caleb.””
He looked at her.
“I saw the car.””
Nia’s breath stopped.
“What?””
“The night it happened.””
“Where?””
“Outside my mother’s house.””
The same house.
The same place where Nia had been living.
The same walls hiding documents.
Secrets.
Evidence.
“What did you see?””
Caleb’s eyes filled with regret.
“My mother arguing with Daniel.””
“And?””
“They were yelling.””
“What were they saying?””
Caleb looked away.
“I only heard pieces.””
“Tell me.””
He swallowed.
“Daniel said he had proof.””
Nia’s heart raced.
“Proof of what?””
“That she had changed the trust documents.””
“And your mother?””
“She told him nobody would believe him.””
Nia felt a cold wave move through her.
“What happened after?””
Caleb looked at the grave.
“Daniel left.””
“And?””
“His car crashed an hour later.””
Silence.
Nia couldn’t speak.
The pieces were connecting.
Vanessa.
The documents.
The fake signature.
The missing files.
Daniel.
But one question remained.
“What did you do?””
Caleb closed his eyes.
“I lied.””
The answer was immediate.
No hesitation.
Nia stared.
“About what?””
“I told the police I didn’t see anything.””
“Why?””
“Because my mother told me if I spoke, she would destroy me.””
Nia felt anger rise.
“You protected yourself.””
“Yes.””
“And let her continue.””
“Yes.””
The honesty made it worse.
Because there was no excuse.
No misunderstanding.
Just a choice.
Nia stepped back.
“So all these years…”
Her voice broke.
“You knew.””
Caleb looked at her.
“I knew enough.””
“That’s not better.””
“I know.””
“You married me knowing your mother had hurt my family.””
“I didn’t know she would hurt you.””
“But she did.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
Nia wiped her eyes quickly.
She refused to cry in front of him.
Not now.
Not after everything.
“Why tell me now?””
Caleb looked at her.
“Because she’s planning something.””
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
He reached into his pocket.
Pulled out his phone.
Opened a message.
Sent from Vanessa.
Nia read it.
Her stomach dropped.
*“If Nia keeps digging, she’ll find out the truth about Caleb’s role that night.””*
A second message followed.
*“And when she does, she’ll hate him more than she hates me.””*
Nia stared.
Caleb looked at her.
“I know what I did.””
She looked at him.
“I know I hurt you.””
The cemetery was silent.
Then his phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time from an unknown number.
Caleb opened it.
His face changed.
Nia saw the fear return.
“What is it?””
He slowly turned the screen toward her.
The message contained one sentence.
*“The person who really caused Daniel’s accident is still alive.””*
Nia looked at Caleb.
Then at the grave.
Because if that message was true…
May you like
Then Daniel Carter’s death was not the end of Vanessa’s secret.
It was only the beginning.
