Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Documents

Nia stared at the phone screen.

For a few seconds, she forgot how to breathe.

The message sat there between them, bright and undeniable.

*“I found the documents you asked about. Your husband doesn’t know yet…”*

Her eyes moved over the words again.

And again.

Like somehow the letters would rearrange themselves into something harmless.

They didn’t.

Vanessa watched her carefully.

Too carefully.

“So?”” Vanessa asked.

Nia slowly looked up.

“What is this?””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“That’s what I was hoping you could tell me.””

The accusation in her voice was clear.

Nia felt heat rise in her chest.

“You’re looking through my messages now?””

Vanessa laughed.

“Don’t change the subject.””

“I didn’t send that message.””

“But you know who did?””

Nia looked back at the screen.

The number wasn’t saved.

No name.

No photo.

Nothing.

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“That’s interesting.””

“What’s interesting?””

“You’re asking me what’s interesting while standing there looking guilty.””

Nia stared at her.

Guilty.

That word echoed.

After everything she had done for this family, after every morning she woke up before everyone else, after every meal she cooked and every mess she cleaned, Vanessa still looked at her like she was the problem.

“I’m not guilty of anything,” Nia said.

Her voice was quiet.

But this time, it didn’t shake.

Vanessa noticed.

Her expression changed slightly.

“You’re getting defensive.””

“I’m asking why you’re accusing me of something you know nothing about.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You should be careful with your attitude.””

Nia almost laughed.

Her attitude?

The woman who had spent the entire day ordering her around was warning her about attitude.

Before Nia could respond, a voice came from the hallway.

“What’s going on?””

Caleb.

Nia turned.

Her husband stood there, one hand resting on the doorway.

For one brief second, she felt relief.

Maybe now he would see.

Maybe now he would understand.

“Caleb,” Nia said, holding out her hand.

“Your mother just showed me a message on her phone and accused me of—”

“Wait.””

Caleb looked at Vanessa.

Then at Nia.

“What message?””

Vanessa immediately softened.

“I don’t know. I was asking a simple question.””

Nia stared at her.

The change was instant.

The cold expression disappeared.

The accusing tone vanished.

Suddenly, Vanessa was the calm one.

The reasonable one.

“I found this message on my phone,” Vanessa said.

“I thought maybe Nia knew something about it.””

Caleb frowned.

“About what?””

Vanessa handed him the phone.

He read the message.

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But Nia noticed.

“You think I sent that?””

Caleb looked up.

“I didn’t say that.””

“But you thought it.””

“Nia…”

“No, tell me.””

The room became quiet.

Caleb sighed.

“I’m just trying to understand what’s happening.””

Nia looked at him.

That sentence hurt.

Because she realized something.

He always wanted to understand.

But he never wanted to defend.

Vanessa walked toward the kitchen table and sat down.

“I’m not accusing anyone.””

Her voice was gentle.

Almost convincing.

“I just think we should be honest with each other.””

Nia looked at her.

Honest.

That word felt strange coming from Vanessa.

“What documents?”” Nia asked.

Vanessa looked at Caleb.

Then back at Nia.

“You tell me.””

“I don’t know.””

“Really?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa leaned back.

“Then maybe you should figure it out.””

Nia felt something inside her break.

She turned away.

“I’m done with this conversation.””

Caleb’s eyebrows lifted.

“Done?””

“Yes.””

“Nia, we’re just trying to talk.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“We’re not talking. I’m being questioned.””

Nobody answered.

Because they knew she was right.

But nobody wanted to admit it.

Nia walked upstairs.

She closed the bedroom door behind her.

Not slammed.

Not dramatically.

Just closed.

Because she was too tired for a fight.

She sat on the edge of the bed.

The room was supposed to be her safe place.

But lately, even this room didn’t feel like hers.

She looked around.

The furniture.

The decorations.

The photos.

Everything represented a life she thought she had built.

A life with Caleb.

A life where she was loved.

Her phone buzzed.

She looked down.

A new message.

Same unknown number.

Her heart tightened.

She opened it.

*“I know Vanessa showed you the message.””*

Nia froze.

A second message appeared.

*“You need to know the truth before she destroys the evidence.””*

Her fingers went cold.

She stared at the screen.

Who was this person?

And how did they know what happened downstairs?

Before she could reply, another message arrived.

*“Meet me tomorrow. Alone.””*

Nia looked toward the bedroom door.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

She typed a response.

*Who are you?*

The three dots appeared.

Someone was typing.

Then stopped.

Then appeared again.

Finally, a reply came.

*“Someone who knows what Vanessa did before she came into your life.””*

Nia’s heart raced.

Before she came into your life.

What did that mean?

She immediately called the number.

It rang once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then went straight to voicemail.

A recorded voice answered.

“Please leave a message after the tone.””

Nia didn’t speak.

She hung up.

For the first time all day, she felt something stronger than exhaustion.

Fear.

Not because of the message.

Because deep down, she had always known something was wrong.

There were things Vanessa avoided talking about.

Things Caleb refused to explain.

Questions that always ended with, “It’s complicated.””

Six months ago, when Nia moved into Caleb’s family home temporarily, everyone told her it would only be for a few weeks.

Vanessa needed help recovering from surgery.

That was the reason.

At least, that was what Caleb told her.

But weeks became months.

And somehow, Nia became the person cooking every meal, cleaning every room, and managing every problem.

Meanwhile, Vanessa recovered completely.

Yet nothing changed.

Nia stood and walked to the closet.

At the back, hidden beneath old sweaters, was a small box.

She hadn’t opened it in months.

Inside were things from her old life.

Her college notebooks.

Her art supplies.

Letters from her grandmother.

And a small folder.

Her personal documents.

She touched the folder.

Then stopped.

Because suddenly she remembered something.

A few weeks after moving in, she had noticed papers missing.

Important papers.

Documents she kept in a locked drawer.

At the time, she thought she had misplaced them.

She thought maybe she packed them somewhere else.

But now…

Her hands trembled as she opened the folder.

Everything was there.

Except one thing.

Her birth certificate.

Nia frowned.

Why would Vanessa need that?

A knock came at the door.

She quickly closed the folder.

“Who is it?””

“It’s me.””

Caleb.

Nia didn’t answer immediately.

“Nia?””

She opened the door slightly.

Caleb stood there.

His expression looked tired.

Not angry.

Almost guilty.

“What?””

He looked down.

“I’m sorry about earlier.””

Nia waited.

That was all?

Sorry?

After watching his mother accuse her?

After letting her stand there alone?

“Are you?””

Caleb looked hurt.

“What’s that supposed to mean?””

“It means I don’t know anymore.””

He stepped closer.

“Nia, you know my mom. She worries.””

Nia almost smiled.

“She worries?””

“Yes.””

“She accused me of hiding something.””

“She didn’t accuse you.””

“She showed you a message and made you think I was lying.””

Caleb rubbed his forehead.

“Can we not do this right now?””

There it was.

The sentence she had heard too many times.

Not right now.

Not today.

Not worth fighting about.

Nia looked at him.

“Do you trust me?””

The question surprised him.

“What?””

“Do you trust me?””

Caleb didn’t answer immediately.

And that silence told her everything.

Nia stepped back.

“Okay.””

“Nia, that’s not fair.””

“What’s not fair is me spending every day proving I’m good enough for people who already decided I’m not.””

Caleb looked away.

For a moment, he had no response.

Then his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His face changed.

Nia noticed.

“Who is it?””

“No one.””

He quickly declined the call.

But not before she saw the name.

*Vanessa.*

Her stomach tightened.

“Your mother is calling you while you’re standing here?””

Caleb put the phone away.

“She probably wants to talk.””

“About me?””

“Nia…”

She looked at him.

“Just answer one question.””

“What?””

“Have you known about those documents?””

His face went still.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Nia saw it.

The hesitation.

The fear.

The tiny crack in his expression.

“Caleb?””

He swallowed.

“I need you to listen to me.””

Her heart began beating faster.

“Listen to what?””

He looked toward the hallway.

Then lowered his voice.

“Whatever happens tomorrow…”

A chill moved through her.

“What happens tomorrow?””

Caleb looked back at her.

And the fear in his eyes was something she had never seen before.

“Do not meet that person who texted you.””

Nia froze.

“How do you know they texted me?””

Caleb didn’t answer.

He just stared at her.

Then his phone buzzed again.

This time, the message appeared on the screen before he could hide it.

A message from Vanessa.

*“Did you tell her?””*

Nia looked at Caleb.

Then at the phone.

And suddenly, she understood.

This was not about a missing document.

This was not about a strange message.

This was about a secret.

A secret both of them already knew.

May you like

And somehow…

She was the last person to find out.
