Chapter 6: The Heir Nobody Knew About

Nia stared at the name written on the envelope.

A name she had never heard before.

A name Caleb recognized immediately.

That frightened her more than the envelope itself.

Because Caleb had spent years telling her he had always been honest with her.

But now she was discovering that he knew pieces of her life that she didn’t even know existed.

“Who is that?”” Nia asked again.

Nobody answered.

The silence stretched.

Vanessa stood beside the bookshelf, watching them.

Not nervous anymore.

Not afraid.

Almost satisfied.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

“Caleb,” Nia said quietly.

He looked at her.

“Tell me.””

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

That hesitation felt like another betrayal.

“Why are you hesitating?””

“I’m trying to find the right way to explain.””

“There is no right way.””

Her eyes moved between him and Vanessa.

“You both knew something about my family, my money, my documents, and my grandmother…”

She picked up the envelope.

“And I knew nothing.””

Caleb looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

Nia shook her head.

“No.””

She placed the envelope back on the table.

“I’m tired of hearing that word.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You’re being emotional.””

Nia turned toward her.

“Of course I’m emotional.””

Her voice rose.

“You spent months making me feel worthless while you were hiding information about my own life.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You don’t understand the situation.””

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Nia smiled sadly.

“That’s what I thought.””

Caleb picked up the envelope.

“Nia, please.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“Open it.””

His face changed.

“What?””

“Open it.””

“Nia…”

“Why?””

She stared at him.

“Is there something inside you don’t want me to see?””

The question hit him.

Because there was.

Caleb slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Old.

Folded carefully.

He unfolded it.

Nia watched his eyes move across the page.

Then his expression changed.

“What does it say?”” she asked.

Caleb didn’t answer.

“Caleb.””

He handed her the paper.

Her hands trembled slightly as she took it.

The letter was from a law office.

Not her grandmother.

A legal notice.

The first line made her heart stop.

*Regarding the undisclosed beneficiary of the Carter family trust.*

Nia read further.

The words blurred.

There was another person connected to her grandmother’s estate.

Someone who had rights.

Someone who could challenge the transfer Vanessa had made.

But the name was the part she couldn’t understand.

Because the person listed wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone connected to her family.

Someone who shared her blood.

“Who is Daniel Carter?”” Nia asked.

Caleb looked away.

Vanessa remained silent.

Nia looked between them.

“Who is he?””

Finally, Caleb spoke.

“Your grandmother’s son.””

Nia froze.

“My grandmother didn’t have a son.””

“She did.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“My mother was her only child.””

Caleb looked at the floor.

“That’s what everyone thought.””

Nia felt dizzy.

The room suddenly felt unfamiliar.

“My grandmother had another child?””

“Yes.””

“And nobody told me?””

Caleb didn’t answer.

“Why?””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Because it was necessary.””

Nia turned.

“Necessary?””

“Yes.””

“You hid a whole person from me.””

“You’re acting like this is simple.””

“It is simple.””

Nia stepped closer.

“My grandmother had another child. That person has a connection to my inheritance. You knew. And you hid it.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know what Daniel is like.””

“Have you met him?””

Silence.

Nia noticed.

“You haven’t.””

Vanessa looked away.

That was another crack.

Another piece of the truth.

“You don’t even know him.””

“I know enough.””

“No.””

Nia shook her head.

“You know enough to control the story.””

Caleb looked at her.

“Nia…”

She turned toward him.

“Did you know about Daniel before we got married?””

His silence answered.

Her face fell.

“Before?””

“I found out a few weeks before the wedding.””

The pain was immediate.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just deep.

“You knew something important about my family before you married me.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

She laughed softly.

“Why does protecting me always look exactly like lying to me?””

Caleb had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

That night, Nia packed a bag.

Not everything.

Just enough.

A few clothes.

Her documents.

The folder from her grandmother.

Her hands moved automatically.

She felt strangely calm.

Sometimes the moment you stop hoping people will change is the moment you finally become free.

Caleb stood in the doorway.

“Where are you going?””

Nia didn’t look up.

“A hotel.””

“You don’t have to leave.””

She stopped packing.

Then looked at him.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

“After everything?””

“Nia, I know I made mistakes.””

She looked at him.

“Mistakes are forgetting an appointment.””

Her voice was quiet.

“This was a choice.””

Caleb lowered his eyes.

“I loved you.””

“I believe you.””

That surprised him.

Then she continued.

“But love without honesty isn’t enough.””

The words hurt him.

Good.

Maybe he needed to feel something.

Anything.

“Nia, I never wanted to hurt you.””

“But you did.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

For a moment, they stood there.

Two people who had once been everything to each other.

Now separated by secrets.

Then Caleb said something unexpected.

“I’ll help you find Daniel.””

Nia looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you deserve the truth.””

She studied his face.

“Do you?””

The question stayed.

Because Caleb knew she wasn’t only asking about Daniel.

She was asking about him.

About their marriage.

About everything he had hidden.

He didn’t answer.

The next morning, Nia met with an attorney.

A friend of Maya’s.

Someone who specialized in estate disputes.

The office was small.

Quiet.

Nothing like the dramatic courtroom scenes Nia had imagined.

Just a desk.

A computer.

A stack of files.

A woman named Rachel who listened carefully.

After reading the documents, Rachel looked up.

“Nia, I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Did you knowingly sign any agreement transferring your rights?””

“No.””

“Did you receive any payment?””

“No.””

“Did anyone explain the documents to you?””

Nia thought back.

The day she moved in.

The papers on the counter.

Vanessa’s voice.

Just routine forms.

“No.””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“That matters.””

Nia looked at her.

“Can Vanessa really take my inheritance?””

Rachel folded her hands.

“Not if these documents were obtained through fraud or misrepresentation.””

The word felt strange.

Fraud.

A word she had never imagined applying to her own family.

“What about the other heir?””

Rachel looked at the letter.

“Daniel Carter.””

“Yes.””

“We need to find him.””

“Why?””

“Because if he has a valid claim, he may have information about your grandmother’s original intentions.””

Nia nodded.

“What do we know about him?””

Rachel typed something into her computer.

“Not much.””

“Nothing?””

“There are records.””

She paused.

“But someone has been trying to keep them difficult to access.””

Nia frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel turned the screen slightly.

“Several files connected to Daniel Carter have been sealed or delayed.””

“By who?””

Rachel looked at her.

“That’s what we need to find out.””

Nia felt a chill.

Because suddenly, this was bigger than Vanessa.

Someone else had been protecting this secret.

Someone with power.

Someone who could erase records.

Rachel continued searching.

Then she stopped.

“Nia.””

“What?””

“I found something.””

The tone of her voice changed.

Nia leaned forward.

“What is it?””

Rachel turned the screen toward her.

An old newspaper article appeared.

The headline was faded.

But the words were clear.

*LOCAL MAN DISAPPEARS AFTER DISPUTE WITH CARTER FAMILY ESTATE*

Nia’s heart began racing.

She read the name.

Daniel Carter.

But beneath the headline was another detail.

A date.

The same year her grandmother died.

“This can’t be right,” Nia whispered.

Rachel looked concerned.

“What?””

“My grandmother told everyone her son died years ago.””

Rachel stared at her.

“Then why is there a missing person report?””

Nia didn’t answer.

Because she already knew.

Someone had lied.

Again.

Her phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

She looked down.

The words appeared.

*“Stop looking for Daniel Carter.””*

Nia’s blood ran cold.

A second message arrived.

*“You have no idea what your grandmother left behind.””*

Then a final message.

*“Ask Caleb why he never told you what happened the night Daniel disappeared.””*

Nia slowly looked up.

Rachel noticed her expression.

“What happened?””

Nia stared at the phone.

Because there was one thing she couldn’t ignore.

One detail that changed everything.

Caleb had known Daniel’s name.

He had known about the inheritance.

He had known about the documents.

And now someone was saying he knew about Daniel’s disappearance.

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

The question she had been avoiding finally came.

What else had Caleb been hiding from her?

And why did everyone who knew the truth seem terrified of her finding it?
