Chapter 5: The Wall That Held the Truth
Nia stood at the bottom of the staircase, staring at the wall.
For months, she had walked past it.
Every morning.
Every afternoon.
Every night.
She had dusted the picture frames hanging there. She had wiped fingerprints from the wooden surface. She had polished the small table beneath it.
She had touched that wall hundreds of times.
And somehow, it had been hiding the biggest secret of her life.
“What did you do?”” Caleb asked.
His voice was different now.
Not confused.
Not hesitant.
Angry.
Vanessa looked at him.
“Don’t act surprised.””
“Where are the documents?””
“You’re asking the wrong question.””
Caleb stepped closer.
“No. I’m asking exactly the right question.””
Vanessa smiled.
“Now you care?””
The words hit him.
Nia watched them silently.
For years, she had thought Caleb was the person caught between two difficult sides.
Her and his mother.
But now she saw something different.
He wasn’t caught in the middle.
He had been standing beside Vanessa.
Just quietly.
“Mom,” Caleb said, “where are they?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I kept them safe.””
“They’re not yours.””
“You don’t understand.””
“No, I understand perfectly.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You have no idea what I did to protect this family.””
Nia stepped forward.
“Protect?””
Vanessa turned.
“Yes.””
“You stole from me.””
“I prevented you from losing everything.””
Nia stared at her.
“How?””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You think money solves everything?””
“No.””
“Then stop acting like I’m the villain because I made decisions you were too immature to make.””
The anger inside Nia burned hotter.
“Immature?””
She laughed softly.
“You took control of my inheritance, forged my signature, and turned me into your unpaid housekeeper.””
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“I gave you a home.””
“No.””
Nia shook her head.
“You gave me a job.””
The silence afterward was heavy.
Even Caleb looked away.
Because they both knew.
That was the truth.
Vanessa walked toward the staircase.
“You want the documents?””
She looked back.
“Fine.””
Nia followed her with her eyes.
“Where are they?””
Vanessa tapped the wall beside the stairs.
“Behind there.””
Caleb immediately moved forward.
“You’re telling us there are legal documents hidden inside the wall?””
Vanessa shrugged.
“They were safer there.””
“Safer from who?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“People like you.””
Nia frowned.
“People like us?””
“Yes.””
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa smiled.
“It means people who think they deserve things just because they were handed them.””
Nia felt a strange calm.
Vanessa was finally showing her true self.
Not the tired mother.
Not the woman who needed help.
The woman who believed everything belonged to her.
Caleb walked to the wall and examined it.
“How do we open it?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Nobody opens it except me.””
Nia looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because I know where the lock is.””
A small pause.
Then Nia noticed something.
A tiny wooden panel near the bottom of the wall.
Almost invisible.
Something she had cleaned every week.
Vanessa walked toward it.
She pressed a section of the wood.
A small click echoed.
The panel opened.
Behind it was a narrow compartment.
Empty.
Vanessa froze.
For the first time all day, she looked genuinely shocked.
“What?””
Caleb stepped closer.
“What’s wrong?””
Vanessa reached inside.
Nothing.
Her fingers searched desperately.
But there was nothing there.
“The documents were here.””
Nia stared.
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
Vanessa turned sharply.
“I put them here.””
“Then where are they?””
Nobody spoke.
The house became completely silent.
Then Caleb looked at Nia.
“Nia.””
She followed his gaze.
“What?””
“Did you take them?””
Her expression changed instantly.
“What?””
“I’m asking.””
“You think I took my own documents?””
“No, I just…”
“You just what?””
Caleb stopped.
Because he knew.
He had done it again.
Doubted her.
Nia stepped back.
“You still don’t trust me.””
“That’s not what I meant.””
“It’s exactly what you meant.””
Vanessa watched them.
And Nia noticed something.
A small smile.
She was enjoying this.
Watching them turn against each other.
Nia looked at Vanessa.
“You moved them.””
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
“What?””
“You moved them before we came back.””
“That’s ridiculous.””
“No.””
Nia stepped closer.
“You knew we found out.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You think you know everything now?””
“No.””
Nia looked around the house.
“But I know you.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You don’t know anything about me.””
“I know you always need control.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“I know you panic when things don’t go your way.””
“I know you pretend to be calm because you think everyone is too afraid to challenge you.””
Caleb watched quietly.
Nia continued.
“And I know you didn’t expect me to fight back.””
For a moment, Vanessa said nothing.
Then she smiled.
A slow, cold smile.
“You’re becoming confident.””
Nia held her stare.
“I’m becoming myself again.””
That sentence seemed to anger Vanessa more than anything else.
“You have no idea who you are without that money.””
Nia felt the words hit.
But this time, they didn’t break her.
Because she finally understood.
Vanessa’s goal was never just the inheritance.
It was making Nia believe she was powerless without it.
“I know exactly who I am,” Nia said.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Do you?””
The question was almost a whisper.
“You think your grandmother chose you because you’re special?””
Nia frowned.
“What?””
Vanessa smiled.
“Maybe you should know the whole story.””
Caleb immediately looked at her.
“Mom.””
“No.””
Vanessa ignored him.
“She didn’t trust you with the money.””
Nia felt her stomach twist.
“What are you saying?””
“She left instructions.””
“What instructions?””
Vanessa walked back toward the living room.
“You never saw the complete letter, did you?””
Nia went still.
The letter.
The one in the folder.
The one she hadn’t finished reading.
She quickly opened the folder.
The page was still there.
Her grandmother’s handwriting.
She scanned the words.
Then stopped.
Because there was another page.
A second page.
One she hadn’t noticed before.
Her hands trembled as she read.
If anyone attempts to take control of this trust before Nia reaches her full independence, the agreement must be reviewed immediately.
Nia looked up.
“What does this mean?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But Nia saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
“You knew about this.””
Vanessa said nothing.
Caleb grabbed the paper.
He read it.
Then looked at his mother.
“Mom…”
Vanessa snapped.
“Don’t.””
“You lied to me too.””
Her expression softened.
“No, Caleb. I protected you.””
“From what?””
“From losing everything.””
Nia stared.
“What does Caleb have to do with my inheritance?””
No one answered.
That silence was louder than words.
Then Caleb slowly looked at her.
“Nia…”
She felt her heart sink.
“What?””
He looked broken.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
Vanessa immediately said:
“Don’t.””
But Caleb continued.
“I didn’t marry you by accident.””
The room stopped.
Nia stared at him.
“What did you say?””
Caleb’s face filled with regret.
“I was going to tell you.””
Her chest tightened.
“No.””
“Nia…”
“No.””
She stepped back.
“Say what you mean.””
Caleb looked like he was about to break.
“My mother knew about the trust before we met.””
The words landed like a punch.
Nia couldn’t move.
“You knew?””
“I didn’t know everything.””
“But you knew.””
“I found out later.””
“When?””
Caleb swallowed.
“After we were already together.””
Nia felt numb.
“So our relationship…”
“No.””
His answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
“I loved you.””
“But?””
He looked away.
And that hesitation destroyed something inside her.
Because there was always a but.
Always an excuse.
Always something hidden.
Vanessa watched silently.
Then she said the one thing that made Nia’s blood run cold.
“Now you understand why I couldn’t let you leave.””
Nia looked at her.
“What?””
Vanessa smiled.
“Because if you leave this house…”
She paused.
“And someone else gets what belongs to them.””
Nia stared.
“Who?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Instead, she walked to the bookshelf.
She pulled out a small envelope hidden behind a row of books.
Then she placed it on the table.
“This is the reason your grandmother never trusted anyone.””
Nia slowly approached.
The envelope had her name written on it.
But beneath it was another name.
A name she had never seen before.
Caleb looked at it.
And his face turned pale.
Nia noticed.
“Who is that?””
He didn’t answer.
“Caleb.””
His voice came out barely above a whisper.
“Nia…”
She looked at the envelope.
Then at him.
“Who is this person?””
Caleb stared at the name.
May you like
And finally said:
“That’s your grandmother’s other heir.””
