Chapter 8: The Document That Could Destroy My Father

I found Dad sitting in the hotel restaurant the following morning.

He had ordered two coffees and a plate of toast.

He looked up when I approached.

"Morning, son.""

I sat down.

"Did you sleep?""

"Not much.""

He pushed one of the coffees toward me.

"Neither did I.""

I looked at him.

"Vanessa said something last night.""

His expression changed slightly.

"What?""

"She told me to ask you about the original ownership documents from 2001.""

Dad didn't answer.

He slowly picked up his coffee.

Then he put it down without drinking.

I leaned forward.

"What's she talking about?""

He stared at the table.

"Daniel, I hoped we wouldn't have to discuss this.""

"Why?""

"Because it involves a decision I made a long time ago.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Was it illegal?""

"No.""

"Did you sign something you shouldn't have?""

He looked at me.

"Yes.""

I waited.

He rubbed his forehead.

"In 2001, Richard was facing serious financial problems. His company had expanded too quickly. Several projects were losing money, and he had borrowed heavily from private lenders.""

"That's when he wanted to buy your shares?""

"Yes.""

Dad took a breath.

"But the company had another problem.""

"What?""

"Some of the original ownership records were incomplete. Richard had failed to register certain transfers properly. There were discrepancies between the partnership agreement and the corporate filings.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"Because he was trying to move assets between different companies to protect them from creditors.""

I stared at him.

"So he was hiding assets?""

"That's what I suspected.""

Dad continued.

"He asked me to sign a confirmation document stating that I had transferred my ownership interest years earlier than I actually had.""

"Why would you agree to that?""

"Because he told me it was necessary to save the company. He said if the creditors seized the assets, dozens of employees would lose their jobs.""

I shook my head.

"Did you sign it?""

Dad nodded.

"Yes.""

I stood up slightly, then sat back down.

"Why didn't you tell Helen?""

"I did. She knows about it.""

"Does it mean Richard can use that document against you?""

Dad looked at me.

"It means he could try.""

I rubbed my face.

"Vanessa said it could destroy you.""

Dad gave a tired smile.

"Richard has spent thirty years believing that one piece of paper gives him power over me.""

"What piece of paper?""

"The original confirmation document.""

I stared at him.

"Where is it?""

Dad shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Before I could ask another question, Helen approached our table.

She carried a laptop and a thick stack of papers.

"Good morning.""

Dad gestured toward the empty chair.

"Helen, we were just discussing the 2001 agreement.""

She sat down.

"Then we need to talk about something I discovered last night.""

She opened her laptop.

"Peter's files contain a copy of the original corporate ownership ledger. It appears Richard altered the date of the transfer after Robert signed the confirmation.""

Dad leaned forward.

"What?""

Helen turned the screen toward him.

The ledger showed two separate dates.

The original transfer was recorded in 2002.

The confirmation document Richard had been using claimed the transfer occurred in 2001.

I frowned.

"Why does that matter?""

"Because the financial obligations associated with the company were different during those periods," Helen explained.

"If Richard deliberately changed the date, he may have been attempting to avoid certain liabilities.""

Dad looked stunned.

"So the document he has been threatening me with...""

"May actually support a claim that he falsified corporate records.""

I sat back.

For the first time, I felt a little relief.

But Helen wasn't finished.

"There's something else. Peter located the original document you signed, Robert.""

Dad looked up.

"Where?""

"In a private storage archive maintained by the company's former legal department.""

"Can we get it?""

"We have a scanned copy. The original is being preserved pending a formal request.""

Helen turned the laptop toward me.

"Look at the bottom of the page.""

I examined the document.

My father's signature was there.

But so was another signature.

Richard Mitchell.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

This document shall not be used to establish ownership or transfer title without the accompanying final settlement agreement.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at Helen.

"So Richard has been showing people an incomplete document?""

"That's what it appears to be.""

Dad shook his head.

"All these years.""

He stared at Richard's signature.

"All these years, I thought I had made a terrible mistake.""

I placed a hand on his shoulder.

"You were trying to save people's jobs.""

He looked at me.

"I should have known better.""

Helen closed the laptop.

"We need to move quickly. Richard's team has already contacted the title company.""

I frowned.

"About the property?""

"Yes. They're attempting to complete the transfer using the authorization you signed.""

"Can they?""

"Not if we act before the closing.""

She placed a document in front of me.

"This is a formal revocation and notice of dispute. I need your signature.""

I read every line carefully.

Then I signed.

Helen collected the paper.

"Good. I'll send it immediately.""

My phone rang.

Vanessa.

I stared at it.

Dad looked at me.

"You don't have to answer.""

I picked up.

"Hello?""

Her voice was different.

No anger.

No sarcasm.

Just desperation.

"Daniel, where are you?""

"With my father.""

"Can we talk?""

"We're talking.""

She sighed.

"I've been thinking about last night.""

"So have I.""

"Michael told me everything.""

I looked at Helen.

"Everything about what?""

"About the transaction. About Dad's plans. About the money.""

I waited.

Vanessa continued.

"I know how it looks.""

"It looks like you married me to get access to my father's property.""

"That's not true.""

"Then why did you write that email?""

She went quiet.

Finally, she whispered:

"Because my father told me it was the only way to protect our family.""

I felt a cold anger rising.

"What family?""

"Ours, Daniel.""

"You were planning to sell my mother's property.""

"I thought we would all benefit.""

"Did you know the wedding was partly financed with money connected to the trust?""

Another pause.

"Yes.""

The honesty surprised me.

"How long have you known?""

"Since before the wedding.""

I closed my eyes.

"And you still stood beside me and exchanged vows.""

"Daniel, I was going to tell you.""

"When?""

"After everything was finalized.""

I laughed bitterly.

"After I signed away my father's property?""

"That's not fair.""

"Nothing about this is fair.""

Her voice became shaky.

"Daniel, please. My father is threatening to cut me off. Michael is furious. I don't know what to do.""

I looked at Dad.

He was watching me with sadness.

"Why don't you come downstairs?"" I asked.

"What?""

"Come to the restaurant. Tell me everything in person.""

She hesitated.

"Will your father be there?""

"Yes.""

"I don't want to speak to him.""

"Then you have nothing to say to me.""

I ended the call.

Twenty minutes later, Vanessa walked into the restaurant.

She wore sunglasses and a loose white blouse.

Her face was pale.

She sat across from me.

Dad remained silent.

Helen stayed at the table, organizing documents.

Vanessa looked at me.

"I didn't plan for things to happen this way.""

I said nothing.

She removed her sunglasses.

"Michael and I were involved before you and I started dating.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"How involved?""

"We dated for almost a year.""

"And you ended it?""

She looked down.

"Not exactly.""

I stared at her.

"Explain.""

"Michael was supposed to inherit a major portion of his father's business. But Richard wanted him to prove he could handle a large development project independently.""

"And that project was my father's property.""

She nodded.

I felt physically sick.

"Then why did you date me?""

"Because Michael introduced us.""

The words hit me harder than I expected.

"You're saying he introduced you to me deliberately?""

Vanessa began crying.

"At first, yes.""

I looked at Dad.

He closed his eyes.

Vanessa continued.

"But I didn't expect to fall in love with you.""

I laughed once.

"At what point?""

"Daniel—"

"Was it before or after you saw my father's financial records?""

She covered her face.

"I did love you.""

"Then why did you agree to the plan?""

"Because my father told me he would lose everything if the deal failed.""

"Your father owns multiple companies.""

"There's more debt than you know.""

She leaned forward.

"Richard has borrowed heavily against the development projects. If the Naples deal doesn't close, several lenders could take control of his company.""

Helen finally spoke.

"That doesn't give him the right to use another family's property.""

Vanessa turned toward her.

"You don't understand. My father is desperate.""

Dad looked at her.

"Your father was once desperate thirty years ago. I helped him. I gave him everything I had.""

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

"And now he's using my son's marriage to take it all back," Dad continued.

She started crying harder.

"I know.""

I looked at her.

"Do you know what hurts the most?""

She shook her head.

"I would have helped you if you had been honest. If Richard had come to me and explained his situation, I would have listened.""

She reached for my hand.

"Daniel...""

I moved my hand away.

"But you chose to deceive me. You chose to use my trust. You chose to humiliate the man who raised me.""

She wiped her cheeks.

"I made a mistake.""

I stared at her.

"One mistake?""

She didn't answer.

Then Helen's phone rang.

She listened for several seconds.

Her expression changed.

"Understood. Send it to my office immediately.""

She ended the call.

I looked at her.

"What happened?""

"The title company has received a second authorization.""

My stomach tightened.

"What second authorization?""

Helen looked at me.

"An authorization bearing your signature, dated yesterday.""

I stared at her.

"That's impossible.""

She placed her phone on the table.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

It showed a signed document.

My signature was at the bottom.

But I hadn't signed it.

Helen zoomed in.

"This appears to be a digitally reproduced signature.""

Dad stood up.

"Richard forged it?""

Helen nodded.

"That's what we need to establish.""

Vanessa suddenly looked terrified.

She stared at the document.

Then she whispered:

"Michael has the original copy.""

I turned toward her.

"What?""

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

"Daniel, I need to tell you something else.""

"What?""

She glanced toward the restaurant entrance.

Then she said:

"Michael didn't just help arrange the deal. He's the one who prepared the forged authorization.""

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed.

A new email had arrived.

The sender was Michael Grant.

The subject line read:

*FINAL NOTICE: PROPERTY TRANSFER CONFIRMATION.*

The attachment contained a photograph of a document.

And beneath it was a message.

Your father should have stayed quiet. The transfer is already scheduled. If you interfere, the next document we release will make Robert Carter look like the man who stole from everyone.

I looked at Dad.

He was no longer angry.

May you like

He was afraid.

And that frightened me more than anything Richard had said.
