Chapter 5: The Woman Who Wanted My Father's Money

I found Vanessa in the bridal suite on the hotel's twentieth floor.

She was standing in front of the enormous mirror, removing her diamond earrings while her mother, Patricia, sat on the sofa.

A bottle of champagne stood open on the dressing table.

Vanessa looked at me through the mirror.

"Finally.""

I closed the door.

"Why did you leave?""

She turned around.

"Because I wasn't going to stand downstairs while your father turned our wedding into a financial circus.""

I stared at her.

"My father didn't do that. You did.""

Her expression hardened.

"Daniel, I'm not having this argument again.""

"You humiliated him in front of 180 people.""

"He humiliated me first.""

"How?""

She threw her earrings onto the dressing table.

"By bringing all those documents and making my father look like some kind of criminal.""

I shook my head.

"You threw his gift onto the floor.""

"It was a wooden box!""

"It was something my mother helped him make.""

Vanessa looked away.

For a brief moment, I thought I saw regret.

Then she spoke.

"Your mother is dead, Daniel. We can't keep making every decision around what she would have wanted.""

The room became very quiet.

I stared at my wife.

"Don't ever speak about my mother like that again.""

Patricia rose from the sofa.

"Daniel, darling, let's all calm down.""

I looked at her.

"Did you know about the trust?""

She blinked.

"What trust?""

"The money Richard Mitchell was supposed to protect for my mother and me.""

Patricia glanced at Vanessa.

Then she looked toward the door.

"I think this is a conversation between you and your father-in-law.""

I laughed bitterly.

"That's convenient.""

Vanessa walked toward me.

"Daniel, listen. We need to stop this before it gets out of control.""

"What exactly needs to stop?""

"The legal accusations. The documents. Your father's ridiculous claims.""

"My father's claims are backed by signed agreements.""

"Old agreements!""

"Then why is your father afraid of them?""

She didn't answer.

Instead, she reached for my hand.

Her voice softened.

"Baby, think about our future.""

I pulled my hand away.

"What about it?""

"We just got married. We should be celebrating. Not fighting over things that happened before we even met.""

I studied her face.

"Are you worried about me?""

"Of course I am.""

"Or are you worried about the money?""

Her expression changed.

"That's insulting.""

"Then answer me.""

She crossed her arms.

"Your father has nearly eight million dollars in property, Daniel. And now we discover that my father might have some old financial obligations. Do you understand how complicated this is?""

I stared at her.

"You know what I find complicated? Understanding how someone can spend eighteen months planning a wedding but not spend five minutes respecting the man who raised her husband.""

She sighed.

"You're making me sound like a monster.""

"No. I'm repeating what you said.""

Patricia stepped between us.

"Enough. Vanessa is emotional. She has been under enormous pressure.""

I turned toward her.

"Your daughter threw my father's gift onto the floor.""

Patricia's mouth tightened.

"And your father arrived dressed like that to a black-tie wedding.""

For a moment, I thought I had misheard her.

"Excuse me?""

She gestured toward the doorway.

"Look around, Daniel. This is a prestigious event. There are business leaders here, important clients, people who know our family. Surely you understand why Vanessa was uncomfortable.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She wasn't defending my father.

She wasn't even pretending to be ashamed.

Instead, she walked toward the dressing table and picked up her phone.

"Look, we can fix this.""

"Fix what?""

"Your father can apologize to Dad. Dad can apologize for whatever happened with the trust. We can all move on.""

I stared at her.

"Why should my father apologize?""

"Because he has embarrassed everyone.""

I shook my head.

"You're unbelievable.""

Vanessa placed her phone down.

Then she said something that changed the entire conversation.

"Daniel, do you even understand what marrying into my family means?""

I looked at her.

"What does it mean?""

"It means stability. Security. Opportunities. My father knows people who can help you advance your career.""

I laughed.

"I have a career.""

"You're a regional operations director, Daniel. That's not exactly the top of the ladder.""

My stomach tightened.

She continued.

"Dad was willing to introduce you to several investors after the wedding. He could have helped you become a partner in one of his companies.""

"And now?""

She hesitated.

"Now, after what your father has done, things are different.""

I looked at Patricia.

She was studying the carpet.

I understood then.

This wasn't just about photographs.

It was about status.

My father had embarrassed Vanessa by reminding her that someone could be wealthy without looking wealthy.

And Richard was angry because the man he had spent years ignoring had returned with documents.

I stepped toward the door.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

"Where are you going?""

"Back downstairs.""

"Daniel, wait.""

I turned.

"What?""

She lowered her voice.

"Please don't make any more scenes. My father is already dealing with enough.""

I looked at her hand on my arm.

Then I gently removed it.

"Your father should have thought about that before using my mother's trust.""

I left.

As I reached the elevator, my phone rang.

It was an unfamiliar number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice spoke.

"Is this Daniel Carter?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Peter Lawson.""

I stopped walking.

"You're the accountant?""

"Former accountant, yes.""

"Where are you?""

"That's not important right now. I understand Helen Brooks has been in contact with your father.""

"She has.""

There was a pause.

Then Peter spoke again.

"Listen carefully. I need to meet with you and Robert tonight.""

"Why?""

"Because Richard knows I've contacted your attorney.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Is that a problem?""

"Mr. Carter, I kept copies of the original financial records. I have documents that could explain everything.""

"Then send them to Helen.""

"I can't.""

"Why not?""

"Because the copies I have contain information about another transaction. One that involves your marriage.""

I stopped breathing for a moment.

"My marriage?""

"Yes.""

"What are you talking about?""

Peter lowered his voice.

"Before I left Mitchell Development, I saw a financial arrangement involving Richard Mitchell and a private investment company. That company made several payments to an account connected to your wedding expenses.""

I stared at the elevator doors.

"What?""

"Your wedding.""

I struggled to process his words.

"Are you saying Richard paid for the wedding?""

"Not directly. But I can show you where the money came from.""

I felt a chill run through me.

"My father-in-law contributed to the wedding.""

"That's what everyone was told.""

Peter paused.

"But the actual source of the money was a company account connected to the disputed property.""

I leaned against the wall.

"Why would he do that?""

"I don't know yet. But there's something else.""

"What?""

Peter took a breath.

"Your wife knew about the arrangement.""

I closed my eyes.

"No.""

"I'm sorry, Daniel.""

"You're wrong.""

"I have an email with her name on it.""

I felt my hands begin to shake.

"What email?""

"An email sent six months ago. It discusses the wedding budget, the property trust, and a financial agreement between Richard and a third party.""

I stared at the floor.

Six months ago.

That was when Vanessa had insisted we increase the wedding budget.

She had told me her father wanted to make the celebration unforgettable.

She had told me not to worry about the cost.

I had assumed it was generosity.

Now I wasn't sure.

"Peter, I need to see those documents.""

"Meet me at the coffee shop across from the hotel at nine tonight. Bring Helen.""

"Why not now?""

"Because I need time to make sure nobody is following me.""

The call ended.

I stood motionless for several seconds.

Then I returned to the ballroom.

Dad was sitting beside Helen.

He looked up immediately.

"Son, what's wrong?""

I pulled out a chair.

"Peter Lawson called.""

Dad's face changed.

"What did he say?""

"He wants to meet us tonight.""

Helen closed her folder.

"Did he explain why?""

I looked at my father.

"He says he has evidence that Richard used money connected to the disputed property to help finance our wedding.""

Dad slowly lowered his eyes.

"That doesn't make sense.""

"There's more.""

I swallowed.

"He says Vanessa knew about it.""

Dad looked at me for a long moment.

Then he reached across the table and took my hand.

"Daniel, listen to me. Whatever happens, don't let money make you forget who you are.""

I nodded.

But my mind was already racing.

Why would Richard use money connected to the Naples property to pay for his daughter's wedding?

And why would Vanessa know?

Before I could ask another question, my phone buzzed.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph.

I opened it.

The image showed Vanessa sitting at a restaurant table with Richard and a man I didn't recognize.

The date in the corner was six months earlier.

Underneath the photograph was a short message:

*Ask your wife what she promised her father before she agreed to marry you.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*She didn't marry you for love, Daniel. She married you because Richard needed access to something your father owns.*

May you like

I looked toward the bridal suite elevator.

And for the first time, I wondered whether my wedding had been planned around a lie from the very beginning.
