Chapter 7: The Wedding Was Never About Love

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Michael Grant was Richard Mitchell's son.

Not his business partner.

Not some independent investor.

His son.

I looked down at the document Peter had placed in front of me.

The proposed transfer agreement was dated six months earlier. It outlined a transaction involving the Naples property, Northstar Capital Holdings, and a newly established company controlled by Michael Grant.

The final page contained a schedule of payments.

If the transfer went through, the property would be sold for $5.2 million.

Its current independent valuation was $7.85 million.

Someone was planning to make more than $2 million by purchasing my family's property below market value.

And Vanessa had apparently been recruited to make it happen.

I looked at Peter.

"How long has this been going on?""

Peter removed his glasses.

"At least eighteen months. Possibly longer.""

"Did Michael know the property belonged to my father?""

"He knew it was held in a family trust. He also knew the trust restrictions made the acquisition difficult.""

I turned toward Helen.

"Can they complete this deal tomorrow?""

She examined the document.

"Not without establishing that the authorization you signed gives them the legal authority they claim. And even then, there are serious questions about whether the authorization was obtained through misrepresentation.""

"Then stop it.""

"I intend to.""

She began photographing the documents with her phone.

"Tomorrow morning, I'll contact the title company, issue formal notice of the dispute, and seek an emergency injunction if necessary.""

Dad looked at Peter.

"Why would Richard do this? He already has more money than most people could spend in several lifetimes.""

Peter gave a tired smile.

"Because money wasn't the only thing he wanted.""

"What else?""

"Control.""

Peter opened another folder.

"Richard has been trying to acquire several adjoining properties in Naples. The Carter property is the last major parcel he needs to complete his development plan.""

Helen studied the attached map.

A large section of coastline was marked in red.

"Luxury resort development," she murmured.

Peter nodded.

"Hotels, private residences, commercial space. If he gets the Carter property, the entire project becomes significantly more valuable.""

I stared at the map.

"How much?""

"His projected development value was over forty million dollars.""

Dad shook his head.

"That land was never supposed to be developed like that.""

He pointed toward a small section near the waterfront.

"Your mother wanted a garden there. She wanted a place where children could play, where families could sit outside, where the neighborhood could enjoy the water.""

I looked at him.

"Then why didn't you build it sooner?""

He smiled sadly.

"Because your mother wanted you to be old enough to decide what to do with it.""

I glanced at the photograph of her.

For the first time, I understood why Dad had protected that property for so long.

It wasn't simply worth millions.

It represented a promise.

And Richard had spent years trying to turn that promise into a business opportunity.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

Where are you? We need to resolve this before tomorrow.

Another message followed.

Please don't let your father destroy our marriage.

I showed it to Helen.

She shook her head.

"Don't respond yet.""

Dad looked at me.

"Daniel, you don't have to do anything tonight.""

I almost laughed.

"Someone is trying to take everything Mom left us, Dad. I think I have to do something.""

He reached across the table.

"Just remember that your decisions will have consequences. Make them carefully.""

I nodded.

But I had already made one decision.

I wasn't signing anything.

Not tomorrow.

Not ever.

At 10:30 p.m., Helen drove Dad and me back to the hotel.

Peter stayed behind with a promise to send the remaining files securely to her office.

As we entered the lobby, I saw Vanessa standing near the elevators.

She was no longer wearing her wedding dress.

She had changed into a cream-colored designer outfit, and her hair was tied into a loose ponytail.

Richard stood beside her.

So did Michael Grant.

The man from the photograph.

Vanessa spotted me immediately.

"Daniel!""

She walked toward us.

"Finally. I've been trying to reach you.""

I stopped.

"What's he doing here?""

She glanced at Michael.

"This is Michael. He's one of Dad's business associates.""

Michael extended his hand.

"Congratulations, Daniel. I wish we'd met under better circumstances.""

I didn't shake it.

"You're Richard's son.""

His smile disappeared.

Richard stepped forward.

"Let's not do this in the lobby.""

I looked at him.

"Why? Are you afraid people might hear what you've been planning?""

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"You're making accusations without understanding the facts.""

"Then explain why your son is listed as the beneficiary of a transaction involving my father's property.""

Vanessa looked at Richard.

Then at Michael.

Her expression changed.

"Dad, what is he talking about?""

Michael answered calmly.

"There's no reason to get emotional. This is a commercial transaction.""

I laughed.

"Commercial transaction? You're trying to buy my family's property for millions less than it's worth.""

Richard straightened his jacket.

"Your father signed agreements years ago.""

"And my attorney says those agreements don't give you the rights you're claiming.""

Richard smiled.

"Your attorney hasn't seen everything.""

Helen stepped forward.

"Then perhaps you'd like to provide the missing documents.""

Richard looked at her.

"Good evening, Helen.""

"Richard.""

Michael glanced between them.

"Can we have this conversation somewhere private?""

"No," I said.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

"Daniel, please. Just listen.""

I looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

"What do you want?""

She lowered her voice.

"I want to save our marriage.""

I stared at her.

"Then tell me the truth.""

Her eyes became glossy.

"I love you.""

"That's not the truth I asked for.""

She swallowed.

"Daniel, my father has been under enormous pressure. His company has been negotiating several deals. He needed the Naples property to complete a development project.""

"And you knew.""

She looked away.

"I knew there was an opportunity.""

"Did you know he planned to use our marriage to get me to sign the transfer?""

"That's not how it happened.""

I pulled the printed email from my pocket.

I had made a copy at the coffee shop.

I held it in front of her.

"Then explain this.""

She read the first paragraph.

Her face went pale.

Michael stepped closer.

"Where did you get that?""

I ignored him.

Vanessa looked at me.

"Daniel, you weren't supposed to see that.""

The words came out before she could stop them.

I felt my heart sink.

"You're right.""

She covered her mouth.

"I didn't mean—"

"No. You said exactly what you meant.""

Richard intervened.

"Vanessa, stop talking.""

But she was already panicking.

"Daniel, listen. The email was taken out of context.""

"What context makes this acceptable?""

She looked toward her father.

He didn't help her.

So she turned back to me.

"Do you know what my father promised me?""

I shook my head.

"After the property deal closed, he was going to give us a share of the development profits. We could have had our own house, our own investments, our own future.""

I stared at her.

"You were planning to profit from my mother's property?""

"Not just your mother's property! It was land that was sitting unused!""

"It belonged to my family.""

"And you would have been rich!""

The words echoed through the lobby.

Several guests who had remained at the hotel turned toward us.

Vanessa's breathing became uneven.

"Daniel, I wanted us to have a better life.""

I looked at her.

"We already had a life.""

She shook her head.

"Not the life I wanted.""

There it was.

The truth.

I looked at Michael.

"Did you know she was marrying me to get access to the property?""

He shrugged.

"Vanessa and I discussed the commercial possibilities.""

I stared at him.

"Did you have a relationship with her?""

Vanessa's head snapped toward him.

"Michael, don't.""

That one sentence told me more than any confession could.

I looked at her.

"Answer me.""

She began crying.

"It was before the wedding.""

"When?""

She couldn't look at me.

Michael finally spoke.

"Daniel, whatever happened between us is none of your concern.""

I stepped toward him.

"You're right. But my marriage is.""

Richard grabbed Michael's shoulder.

"Enough. We're leaving.""

Then he turned toward me.

"Daniel, you have forty-eight hours to reconsider your position. If you refuse to cooperate, things will become much more difficult for your father.""

Helen stepped between us.

"Are you threatening Mr. Carter?""

Richard smiled.

"I'm explaining the consequences of business disputes.""

He walked toward the elevator.

Michael followed.

Vanessa remained.

She looked at me with tears running down her cheeks.

"Please don't do this.""

I looked at the woman I had married only hours earlier.

The woman who had stood beside me while I promised to love her for the rest of my life.

The woman who had thrown my father's gift onto a marble floor.

And the woman who had apparently planned to turn our marriage into a business transaction.

I removed my wedding ring.

She stared at it.

"Daniel?""

I placed it on the small table beside us.

"I'm not signing anything.""

Then I walked away.

But as the elevator doors closed, Vanessa shouted something that made me turn around.

"You're making a mistake! Dad knows something about your father that could destroy him!""

I stared at her.

"What?""

She wiped her tears.

Then she said:

"Ask Robert what happened to the original ownership documents in 2001.""

May you like

The elevator doors closed.

And for the first time that night, I wondered whether my father had told me the entire truth.
