Chapter 9: The Man Who Built The Lie
Daniel stood in the hallway with the phone pressed against his ear.
He didn’t hear the house anymore.
Not the ticking clock.
Not the quiet footsteps behind him.
Not even Lily’s soft breathing from upstairs.
All he heard was one sentence.
It was me.
The voice belonged to Marcus Reed.
His best friend.
His business partner.
The man who had stood beside him during the darkest years of his life.
The man who had held his shoulder at Emily’s funeral and told him:
“You’ll get through this.””
The man who had helped him raise his company when Daniel thought he had lost everything.
The man who had just admitted he was the reason Lily’s records had been changed.
Daniel’s hand tightened around the phone.
“Say that again.””
There was silence.
Then Marcus spoke.
“I changed the records.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Why?””
“I thought I was protecting you.””
Daniel almost laughed.
Everyone said that.
Everyone who lied.
Everyone who hid things.
Everyone who made decisions about his life without asking him.
They all used the same excuse.
“I was protecting you.””
Daniel looked back into the room.
Emily stood near the window.
Vanessa sat on the couch.
Michael watched him carefully.
Three people connected by secrets.
And now a fourth.
“Where are you?”” Daniel asked.
“Somewhere we can talk.””
“No.””
His voice hardened.
“You don’t get to choose anymore.””
A pause.
“Daniel—”
“You’ve chosen everything for me for years.””
The anger in his voice surprised even him.
“You chose what I knew. What I believed. What I lost.””
Marcus said nothing.
“Where are you?””
Another pause.
Then:
“The old office building.””
Daniel knew exactly where.
The first Stellan Technologies office.
The place where he and Marcus had started with two desks and a borrowed computer.
The place where they had built everything.
The place where Daniel had trusted him completely.
“I’ll be there.””
He ended the call.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Emily said:
“Daniel.””
He turned.
“No.””
She stopped.
“I need answers.””
“You deserve them.””
“Yes.””
His eyes moved to Vanessa.
“From everyone.””
Vanessa looked down.
Daniel walked toward the stairs.
“I’m taking Lily with me.””
Emily looked alarmed.
“Where?””
“Somewhere safe.””
Michael gave a small, humorless smile.
“You think you know what safe means now?””
Daniel looked at him.
“You don’t get to lecture me about safety.””
The words hit.
Michael accepted them.
Because he knew Daniel was right.
Daniel went upstairs.
Lily was awake.
She sat on her bed holding her stuffed rabbit.
“Daddy?””
He forced a smile.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
Her eyes moved toward the hallway.
“Is Mommy mad?””
The question hurt.
“No.””
“Are you leaving?””
Daniel sat beside her.
“No.””
He took her hand.
“I’m just taking you somewhere with me for a little while.””
“Is Mommy coming?””
Daniel paused.
He didn’t know how to answer.
And Lily noticed.
Children always noticed.
“Daddy?””
He squeezed her hand.
“I don’t know.””
Her eyes filled.
“Did I do something wrong?””
The question broke him.
“No.””
Daniel pulled her into his arms.
“No, Lily. Never.””
She rested her head against his chest.
“Then why is everyone fighting?””
Daniel looked toward the door.
Because the truth was too complicated for a child.
Because adults had created a world of lies and somehow expected children not to feel the cracks.
“Sometimes grown-ups make mistakes.””
Lily whispered:
“Like breaking a cake?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
A small pause.
“But some mistakes are much bigger.””
The old office building looked smaller than Daniel remembered.
Maybe because he was different now.
Maybe because memories became smaller when they were surrounded by betrayal.
Marcus was waiting inside.
No security.
No assistant.
No expensive suit.
Just a tired man sitting alone in an empty office.
Daniel walked in.
Marcus looked up.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Marcus stood.
“Daniel.””
“Don’t.””
Marcus stopped.
Daniel looked around.
The old desks.
The faded walls.
The photographs from the company’s first year.
Everything looked the same.
Except nothing was.
“You changed her records.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Marcus looked down.
“Because Emily asked me.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“She came to me.””
“When?””
“Before the accident.””
Daniel stared.
“Everyone keeps saying before the accident.””
He stepped closer.
“Why was everyone hiding things from me?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Because Emily believed you were in danger.””
“From who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Daniel’s patience disappeared.
“Who?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Your father.””
The words meant nothing for a second.
Then everything.
“My father died ten years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
Marcus sat down.
“I found financial records.””
Daniel frowned.
“What records?””
“Your father had business connections with people who were involved with Michael.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought so too.””
Marcus opened a drawer.
He pulled out a folder.
Daniel recognized the handwriting immediately.
His father’s.
“He wasn’t the man you thought he was.””
Daniel looked at the papers.
“You’re saying my father knew Michael?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Marcus looked away.
“Because Michael was helping him hide money.””
Daniel felt numb.
His entire family history was changing.
One secret at a time.
“What does that have to do with Lily?””
Marcus answered quietly.
“Your father knew about Lily before she was born.””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
“He knew Emily was pregnant.””
“That makes no sense.””
Marcus sighed.
“Daniel, your father knew Lily wasn’t just another child.””
The room felt colder.
“Why?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Because Lily was connected to an inheritance.””
Daniel stared.
“What inheritance?””
“The Voss family fortune.””
Silence.
Daniel almost laughed.
“This is insane.””
“I know.””
“Lily?””
Marcus nodded.
“Michael’s family has old trusts. Money protected by legal agreements. If Lily existed, certain assets could never be controlled by Michael.””
Daniel stared.
“So Michael wanted the records changed.””
“Yes.””
“And my father helped him?””
Marcus looked down.
“Yes.””
Daniel felt sick.
His own family.
His own father.
Everyone protecting money.
Everyone fighting over a child who only wanted to be loved.
“What about Emily?””
Marcus’s face changed.
“She found out.””
“And?””
“She was going to expose everyone.””
Daniel’s breathing slowed.
“The accident.””
Marcus nodded.
“It wasn’t an accident.””
“Who did it?””
Marcus looked toward the window.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel stared.
“You’re lying.””
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“But I know who ordered it.””
The room became silent.
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Vanessa.””
Daniel froze.
“No.””
“She didn’t mean for Emily to die.””
“Then why?””
“Because she was trying to stop Michael.””
Daniel shook his head.
“None of this makes sense.””
Marcus stood.
“You need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Everyone in this story did something terrible because they believed they had no choice.””
Daniel looked at him.
“That doesn’t make it right.””
“No.””
Marcus nodded.
“It doesn’t.””
The door behind them opened.
Daniel turned.
Emily stood there.
Her face was pale.
“You shouldn’t have told him.””
Marcus looked at her.
“He needed the truth.””
Emily stepped inside.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“He needed the whole truth.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
She looked down.
Then whispered:
“The person who caused the accident wasn’t trying to kill me.””
Daniel waited.
“They were trying to kill Lily.””
The words destroyed the room.
Daniel couldn’t move.
Emily continued:
“And I disappeared because I found out who ordered it.””
“Who?””
She looked directly at him.
And the answer was one he never expected.
“The person who has been raising Lily beside you for the last two years.””
Daniel felt the air leave his lungs.
“Vanessa?””
Emily nodded slowly.
“But that’s not the worst part.””
Daniel stared.
“What could possibly be worse?””
Emily’s voice became barely audible.
“Vanessa didn’t act alone.””
A pause.
“She had help.””
Daniel’s phone buzzed.
A new message.
One picture.
One location.
And one sentence.
*Come alone if you want to know what really happened to Emily.*
Daniel looked at the address.
His blood went cold.
Because the location was the place where Emily had supposedly died.
And underneath the message was a name.
May you like
The person who sent it.
Vanessa.
