Chapter 6: The Voice That Should Have Been Gone
Daniel couldn’t move.
The phone was pressed against his ear, but the rest of him felt disconnected from reality.
His mind kept repeating the same impossible thought.
Emily.
It was Emily’s voice.
Not someone who sounded like her.
Not a recording he had accidentally mistaken.
Her voice.
The small changes in her breathing.
The softness at the end of her sentences.
The way she said his name when she was scared.
Daniel knew that voice.
He had spent years loving that voice.
“Who is this?”” he finally managed to ask.
The line stayed silent for a moment.
Then:
“Daniel, you need to leave the house.””
His heart slammed against his chest.
“Emily?””
Across the room, Vanessa covered her mouth.
Ethan immediately stepped forward.
“Put it on speaker.””
Daniel ignored him.
“Where are you?””
A shaky breath came through the phone.
“I don’t have much time.””
“Where are you?””
“Listen to me.””
Her voice became urgent.
“You cannot trust everyone in that house.””
Daniel looked around.
At Vanessa.
At Ethan.
At the walls that suddenly felt like they belonged to someone else.
“Are you alive?””
The silence that followed was worse than any answer.
“Emily.””
“Daniel…”
The way she said his name broke him.
It sounded like an apology.
“I’m sorry.””
His eyes filled.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“No, you don’t get to say that. You don’t get to disappear and then call me like this.””
“Daniel—”
“Where were you?””
His voice cracked.
“Why did you let me believe you were gone?””
The line went quiet.
Then Emily whispered:
“Because I thought it was the only way to keep Lily alive.””
Daniel stopped.
Every emotion disappeared except one.
Fear.
“What do you mean?””
“Lily cannot hear this.””
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
His daughter was sleeping.
Safe.
Or at least, he had thought she was.
“Emily, tell me what’s happening.””
“I left instructions.””
“For what?””
“For when Ethan came back.””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
The man’s expression had changed.
He wasn’t surprised anymore.
He was worried.
“You knew she was alive,” Daniel said.
Ethan didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Daniel lowered the phone.
“You knew.””
Ethan’s face tightened.
“I suspected.””
“You suspected?””
Daniel’s anger exploded.
“My wife has been alive for three years and you suspected?””
“I was trying to find proof.””
Daniel stared at him.
“You were taking pictures of my daughter while searching for proof?””
Ethan looked away.
“I was watching the people around her.””
“You were watching my child.””
“Yes.””
The answer was honest.
And somehow that made it worse.
Daniel turned back to the phone.
“Emily, where are you?””
“I can’t tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because if I tell you, they’ll know.””
“Who?””
Another pause.
Then Emily said:
“The person who caused the accident.””
Daniel felt the room become colder.
The accident.
The word everyone had used.
The word that had never felt right.
“What accident?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Daniel…”
He looked at her.
But Emily answered first.
“You need to hear this from me.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Tell me.””
“The night I died wasn’t an accident.””
The sentence landed like a physical blow.
Three years of grief.
Three years of accepting something he never truly understood.
All of it shattered.
“I was followed.””
“By who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“But I know someone wanted me gone.””
Daniel gripped the phone.
“Why?””
“Because I found out the truth about Lily.””
His heart stopped.
“What truth?””
The line went silent.
Then Emily said:
“Lily was never supposed to be your daughter.””
Daniel felt like the floor moved beneath him.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at him.
Ethan looked away.
Daniel’s voice became a whisper.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying there are things about Lily’s birth that you don’t know.””
His hands went numb.
“No.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
He stepped backward.
“No. You’re wrong.””
“I wish I was.””
The call cut off.
Daniel stared at the phone.
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Vanessa whispered:
“She called.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“You knew she was alive.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I knew she might be.””
“Might be?””
“She contacted me once.””
Daniel’s anger returned.
“When?””
“After the accident.””
His voice became dangerous.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
Vanessa looked down.
“She begged me not to.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“Of course she did.””
“She said if Ethan found out, Lily would be in danger.””
“And you believed her?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you marry me?””
Vanessa looked at him.
The answer took too long.
“Because Emily asked me to.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“She asked me to stay close to you.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
Then Vanessa.
Then the stairs.
His entire life had become a story where everyone knew the ending except him.
“She asked you to marry me?””
“No.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“She asked me to protect you.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Then why did you hide everything?””
“Because I failed.””
The confession was quiet.
“I thought I could control the situation.””
She wiped her tears.
“I thought if I kept Ethan close, I could keep him away from you.””
Daniel stared.
“You let that man into my daughter’s birthday party.””
“I didn’t invite him.””
“Then how did he get there?””
Vanessa had no answer.
That was the answer.
Later that night, Daniel sat beside Lily’s bed again.
He couldn’t sleep.
Every sound made him look up.
Every shadow made him think someone was standing there.
Lily stirred.
“Daddy?””
Daniel immediately softened.
“I’m here.””
She opened her eyes halfway.
“Are you mad?””
The question broke his heart.
“No, baby.””
“But Mommy said people get mad when you ask too many questions.””
Daniel went completely still.
“When did Mommy say that?””
Lily hugged her stuffed rabbit.
“A long time ago.””
“Where?””
“In the kitchen.””
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“What questions were you asking?””
Lily looked confused.
“I asked why the man was in the picture.””
“What man?””
She pointed toward the hallway.
“The man Mommy told me not to talk about.””
Daniel followed her finger.
There was a framed family photo hanging outside her room.
A photo he had seen hundreds of times.
He stood and walked toward it.
It was from their first Christmas together.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
Lily.
Everyone smiling.
But now he noticed something.
In the background, partially hidden behind the doorway, was a reflection.
A man.
Watching.
Daniel removed the frame from the wall.
Behind it was something taped to the back.
A small envelope.
His name written on it.
Not Emily’s handwriting.
Not Vanessa’s.
Someone else’s.
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
And a note.
The photograph showed Lily as a newborn.
In the hospital.
Daniel stared at it.
Because the man holding baby Lily in the picture wasn’t him.
The note beneath it contained one sentence:
“Ask Vanessa why the hospital records were changed.””
Daniel’s phone buzzed.
A message from Emily.
Only three words.
“I’m coming home.””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
Then at the sleeping child beside him.
And he realized the truth he had been refusing to accept.
The biggest secret in his house wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Ethan.
It wasn’t even Emily’s disappearance.
May you like
It was Lily.
And someone had spent years making sure Daniel never discovered who his daughter really was.
