Chapter 2: The Picture Nobody Was Supposed To See

Daniel stared at the message until the screen dimmed in his hand.

The bedroom was silent except for Lily’s soft breathing.

For a few seconds, he couldn’t move.

The photograph remained open on his phone.

His daughter stood in the hallway wearing the same pink pajamas she had worn two nights earlier. Her small shoulders were pulled inward. Her eyes were fixed on the floor.

Behind her stood Vanessa.

One hand was raised.

Not touching Lily.

Not hurting her.

But close enough that Daniel could see the fear in his daughter’s posture.

The picture had captured a moment.

A single second.

And Daniel hated that he didn’t know what happened before it.

Because uncertainty was becoming the one thing he could no longer tolerate.

He zoomed in.

The photo quality was good.

Too good.

Someone had taken it from inside the house.

Not from the street.

Not from a passing car.

Inside.

Daniel looked toward the baby monitor camera on Lily’s shelf.

Then toward the hallway outside her room.

His heart began beating harder.

The message had come from an unknown number.

Whoever sent it knew something about his home.

Whoever sent it had access.

His phone buzzed again.

Daniel almost dropped it.

Another message.

This time there was no picture.

Only words.

“Check the guest room closet.””

He stared at the screen.

A normal person would have called the police.

A normal person would have woken up his wife and demanded answers.

But Daniel had spent fifteen years building companies because he understood one thing.

People revealed more when they thought they were safe.

He slowly stood.

He looked at Lily.

“Daddy will fix this,” he whispered.

The words sounded strange.

Because he wasn’t sure if he was promising her or himself.

He walked out of the room.

The hallway lights were off.

The mansion looked different at night.

During the day, Vanessa loved showing people how beautiful it was.

The polished floors.

The massive windows.

The expensive furniture chosen by a designer in New York.

But at two in the morning, the house felt empty.

Almost unfamiliar.

Daniel moved toward the guest room.

Every step felt heavier.

He opened the door.

The room smelled like fresh linen and expensive perfume.

Nobody stayed there often.

Vanessa used it mostly when friends visited.

Or when she needed somewhere quiet to take business calls.

Daniel walked to the closet.

His hand stopped on the handle.

For the first time since receiving the message, he hesitated.

Because opening that door meant there was no going back.

He pulled it open.

At first, he saw nothing unusual.

Clothes.

Extra blankets.

Storage boxes.

Then his eyes caught something behind a stack of towels.

A small black device.

Daniel reached for it.

It was a recording camera.

Not a security camera.

Not one of the devices he had installed.

A hidden camera.

His stomach tightened.

He picked it up carefully.

The memory card was still inside.

Someone had been recording.

His house.

His family.

His daughter.

His hands trembled with anger.

Then he heard a voice behind him.

“What are you doing?””

Daniel turned.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

She was wearing a silk robe.

Her hair was loose.

She looked like she had just woken up.

But Daniel noticed something.

She wasn’t confused.

She wasn’t asking why he was awake.

She was looking directly at the camera in his hand.

And for a brief moment, fear crossed her face.

Then it disappeared.

“Where did you find that?”” she asked.

Daniel held it up.

“You tell me.””

Vanessa stepped into the room.

“Daniel, don’t make accusations without knowing what you’re talking about.””

He laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because he couldn’t believe those were the first words she chose.

“My daughter cried at her own birthday party.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Because she knocked over a cake.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Because she thought she was going to get in trouble.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then what happened?””

Vanessa looked away.

A small movement.

But Daniel caught it.

“Vanessa.””

She crossed her arms.

“You’re tired. You’re emotional. You’re letting some anonymous person manipulate you.””

Daniel looked down at the camera.

“Someone recorded my daughter in my house.””

“And?””

The word came out before Vanessa could stop it.

Daniel froze.

“And?””

Vanessa realized her mistake.

Her face changed.

“Daniel, that’s not what I meant.””

“No.””

His voice became quieter.

“That is exactly what you meant.””

For the first time in their marriage, Daniel looked at his wife and felt like he was seeing a stranger.

Two years ago, Vanessa had walked into his life when he was exhausted from work and convinced himself he didn’t need anyone.

She had been warm.

Patient.

Understanding.

She had listened to stories about his late first wife without making him feel guilty.

She had loved Lily.

Or at least, Daniel thought she had.

But now every memory felt different.

Every moment had a question attached.

Vanessa looked at the camera again.

“Give it to me.””

Daniel almost smiled.

“Excuse me?””

“Give it to me, Daniel.””

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know what you’re looking at.””

“Then explain.””

She stayed quiet.

That silence was the answer.

Daniel put the camera in his pocket.

“I’m going to find out.””

Vanessa’s voice changed.

“Daniel.””

He stopped.

“Don’t do this.””

He turned around.

“What does that mean?””

Her eyes softened.

For a second, she looked almost hurt.

“I mean you’re destroying your family over something you don’t understand.””

Daniel stared at her.

“My family?””

The words tasted bitter.

“My daughter was crying on the floor today, and you’re worried about the family?””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“You’re making me the villain.””

“I haven’t called you anything.””

“But you’re thinking it.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he was.

And she knew it.

The next morning, Daniel arrived at Stellan Technologies three hours later than usual.

His assistant, Claire, noticed immediately.

She had worked for him for seven years.

Long enough to know when he was pretending everything was fine.

“You didn’t sleep,” she said.

Daniel placed the camera on his desk.

“No.””

Claire looked at it.

“What is that?””

“I need you to find out where it came from.””

She frowned.

“Daniel…”

“Quietly.””

She understood the seriousness in his voice.

Claire picked it up carefully.

“Is this related to the party?””

Daniel looked out the window.

The city below was moving like nothing had happened.

People walking.

Cars passing.

Everyone living normal lives.

“I think someone has been watching my daughter.””

Claire’s expression changed.

“Lily?””

Daniel nodded.

“And I think my wife knows why.””

The words felt worse when spoken aloud.

Claire didn’t ask questions.

She simply nodded.

“I’ll look into it.””

An hour later, Daniel was going through old home security footage.

He watched clips from the previous month.

Lily eating breakfast.

Lily drawing pictures.

Lily dancing in the living room while Vanessa laughed beside her.

Normal moments.

Happy moments.

Or moments that looked happy.

Then he saw something.

A recording from three weeks earlier.

Lily was sitting at the kitchen table coloring.

Vanessa walked in.

She looked tired.

Annoyed.

Daniel turned up the volume.

At first, he only heard Lily humming.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Why did you tell Daddy?””

Daniel leaned closer.

Lily looked up.

“I didn’t.””

“Yes, you did.””

“No, Mommy.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

Daniel felt his entire body go cold.

He replayed it.

Again.

And again.

Why did you tell Daddy?

Tell him what?

He watched as Vanessa crouched down beside Lily.

Her voice became softer.

Dangerously softer.

“You know what happens when you make Mommy upset.””

Lily nodded.

A tiny movement.

Almost invisible.

Then Vanessa smiled.

“Good girl.””

The screen froze.

Daniel stared at the image.

His daughter’s frightened face.

His wife’s calm expression.

And suddenly, the anonymous message made sense.

This wasn’t new.

This had been happening for weeks.

Maybe months.

His phone rang.

Claire.

Daniel answered immediately.

“What did you find?””

There was a pause.

A long one.

Then Claire spoke quietly.

“Daniel, you need to come back to the house.””

“Why?””

“Because I checked the camera’s storage.””

Another pause.

“And there’s something you need to see.””

Daniel stood.

“What?””

Claire’s voice dropped.

“There are recordings from before you married Vanessa.””

Daniel stopped moving.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“Claire…”

“Daniel, the person who installed these cameras didn’t start watching your family after the wedding.””

Her voice became almost a whisper.

“They were watching Vanessa before you ever met her.””

And then Claire said the name attached to the original camera account.

A name Daniel had never heard before.

But one that made Vanessa’s hidden world begin to fall apart.

May you like

“Daniel…”

“It belongs to someone named Ethan Vale.””
