Chapter 4: The Secret My First Wife Took To Her Grave
Daniel stared at the photograph until the words on the screen stopped looking like words.
Emily.
His Emily.
Standing beside Ethan Vale.
Alive.
Smiling.
A version of her he had almost forgotten existed.
For a moment, Daniel’s mind rejected the image completely.
It was impossible.
Emily had never met Ethan.
At least, that was what he believed.
She had died before Vanessa entered his life.
Before he had ever heard the name Ethan Vale.
Before anyone could have connected the two worlds.
But the photograph didn’t care what Daniel believed.
It sat there quietly, proving that his memories were incomplete.
The image showed Emily standing outside a café.
Her hair was shorter than Daniel remembered.
She was wearing a gray coat.
She looked younger.
Happier.
And beside her stood Ethan.
The same man who had laughed while standing in his daughter’s birthday cake.
The same man who had hidden cameras inside Daniel’s home.
Daniel’s fingers moved across the screen.
He zoomed in.
There was no mistake.
It was Emily.
His first wife.
The mother of Lily.
The woman whose last words to him had been:
“Take care of our little girl.””
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
A thousand questions arrived at once.
Why did Emily know Ethan?
Why did she never tell him?
Why did Ethan have pictures of her?
Why was he connected to Vanessa?
And why had he waited until now to reveal it?
A sound came from the hallway.
Daniel looked up.
Vanessa stood at the door.
She had seen his face.
She knew.
“What happened?”” she asked quietly.
Daniel didn’t answer.
He turned the phone around.
The color disappeared from Vanessa’s face.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“You know her,” Daniel said.
Vanessa didn’t move.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
His voice was low.
“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.””
She swallowed.
“Where did you get that?””
“From Ethan.””
That name changed her expression.
Daniel noticed.
Every time Ethan appeared, Vanessa reacted like someone had opened a door she had spent years trying to lock.
“What did he send you?””
Daniel stood.
“A picture of my dead wife.””
Silence.
Vanessa looked down.
And that hurt more than if she had argued.
Because Daniel knew that look.
It was the look of someone carrying a secret.
“Tell me the truth.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know how.””
“You’ve had two years.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
Daniel almost smiled.
“Everyone says that when they’re hiding something.””
Vanessa stepped into the room.
“You think I wanted any of this?””
“I don’t know what to think anymore.””
Her eyes filled slightly.
But Daniel couldn’t tell if it was guilt or pain.
“Emily was involved with Ethan before you met me.””
The sentence felt like a crack forming in the ground beneath him.
“What does involved mean?””
Vanessa looked away.
“You need to hear this from the beginning.””
Daniel waited.
But she didn’t start.
Not yet.
Because the hardest part was never telling the truth.
The hardest part was admitting how long you had avoided it.
Two hours later, Daniel sat across from Vanessa in the living room.
Neither of them touched the coffee sitting between them.
For the first time since they got married, they sat like strangers.
“Ethan and I met when I was twenty-four,” Vanessa said.
Daniel listened without interrupting.
“He was charming. Smart. Everyone trusted him.””
Daniel looked at her.
“That sounds familiar.””
The comment hurt.
Vanessa accepted it.
“I thought I knew him.””
“You didn’t?””
“No.””
She took a breath.
“I found out he was obsessed with controlling people’s lives.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Then why was he with Emily?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because Emily found out.””
“Found out what?””
“That he had been collecting information about people.””
Daniel frowned.
“Information?””
“Photos. Messages. Personal details.””
A cold feeling moved through him.
“Like the cameras?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
Toward Lily’s room.
“So Emily knew what he was doing?””
“Yes.””
“And she didn’t tell me?””
Vanessa’s eyes lowered.
“She wanted to.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Vanessa looked like she hated herself for continuing.
“Emily contacted me.””
Daniel stared.
“You?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before she died.””
The room went completely silent.
Daniel stood suddenly.
“You spoke to my wife before she died?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of Ethan.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You expect me to believe you were protecting me?””
“No.””
Her answer surprised him.
“I expect you to believe that I was scared.””
Daniel looked at her.
Because for the first time, Vanessa wasn’t defending herself.
She was admitting weakness.
“What did Emily tell you?””
Vanessa’s fingers tightened around the coffee cup.
“She told me if anything happened to her, I needed to stay away from Ethan.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“Anything happened?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She was worried.””
“Why?””
“Because Ethan had started asking questions about Lily.””
Daniel stopped.
His daughter’s name changed everything.
“What kind of questions?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“He wanted to know where she would grow up. Who would raise her. What kind of life she would have.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“And you still married me?””
“I didn’t know he would come back.””
“But he did.””
“Yes.””
The answer was almost a whisper.
Daniel walked toward the window.
The city lights blurred outside.
He thought about Emily.
About all the nights after she died when he wondered if there had been something he missed.
A warning.
A sign.
Anything.
Now he was wondering if Emily had tried to leave him one.
“What happened the night Emily died?””
Vanessa became completely still.
Daniel turned.
“Vanessa.””
She looked away.
“That’s the one thing I never knew.””
“You’re lying.””
Her eyes met his.
“I’m not.””
“Then why do you look scared?””
Because she was.
Daniel saw it.
She was afraid of the answer.
“I was told Emily’s death was an accident,” Vanessa said.
“Told by who?””
She didn’t respond.
“Who told you?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Ethan.””
Daniel felt the room tilt.
“He told you?””
“Yes.””
“And you believed him?””
“I was twenty-six. I was terrified. He had evidence that he could ruin my life.””
“What evidence?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
That answer made Daniel angry.
“You don’t know?””
“He said he had proof that I was connected to things I didn’t do.””
Daniel stared.
“What things?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
A sound interrupted them.
The front door.
Both of them turned.
Someone had entered the house.
Daniel immediately moved toward the hallway.
“Who is there?””
No answer.
Only footsteps.
Slow.
Confident.
Someone who wasn’t afraid of being caught.
Then Ethan Vale stepped into the living room.
He looked exactly like he had at the birthday party.
Calm.
Expensive suit.
A small smile.
Except this time, Daniel wasn’t seeing a stranger.
He was seeing the man connected to his wife.
His daughter.
And his dead wife.
“You finally found the picture,” Ethan said.
Daniel’s hands tightened into fists.
“How did you get in here?””
Ethan ignored the question.
Instead, he looked at Vanessa.
“You told him.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“I had to.””
Ethan sighed.
“That was disappointing.””
Daniel moved between them.
“You’re going to explain everything.””
Ethan looked at him.
“Daniel, there’s something you need to understand.””
“What?””
Ethan’s expression changed.
For the first time, there was no amusement.
Only seriousness.
“Your wife isn’t the person you should be worried about.””
Daniel stared.
“Then who?””
Ethan reached into his coat.
Daniel tensed.
But Ethan only pulled out an old envelope.
He placed it on the table.
“It belonged to Emily.””
Daniel looked at the envelope.
His name was written on the front.
His handwriting wasn’t there.
Emily’s was.
Daniel slowly picked it up.
“You had this?””
Ethan nodded.
“She gave it to me the night before she died.””
Daniel’s heartbeat became louder.
“What does it say?””
Ethan looked directly at him.
“It explains why she never told you the truth.””
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a single letter.
The first line was enough to make his hands shake.
“Daniel, if you are reading this, it means I was right about Vanessa…”
He stopped.
His eyes lifted.
Across the room, Vanessa looked like she had already accepted what was coming.
And Daniel realized the truth he had been avoiding.
The birthday cake wasn’t the beginning.
The cameras weren’t the beginning.
The secrets weren’t the beginning.
May you like
The beginning was a letter his dead wife had written before she left him forever.
And now he was finally about to read it.
